I'm trying to track 1841 Census details for William and his family. In the 1881 Census he is down as being born in Deptford, Kent, though using 1837.com it had him down as born in the parish of Newington.
I believe William may have been born Q2 1847.
Any help very much appreciated.

Hi Joe
Do you have William on all the census years 1851-1901? If not, let us know which one for sure is him ie. where he was living and when and somebody will take a look for you. There are a number of William CHAPPELs born about that time in those areas so just want to make sure you get the right family ;)

Hi Casalguidi,
I'm replying from work at the moment. I'll drop a proper response tonight when I've got my documents in front of me & in front of a machine that can access the Census images. I've got him in some but not all.
Until later.
Joe
PS. How do people access the 1841 Censuses? Can I subscribe anywhere?

1881:
Living at 70 Milkwood Road, Lambeth, London
William Henry Chappell, abt 1846, Deptford, Kent - Head (printer and lithographer)
Jane Chappell (born Jane Luxton), abt 1849, Aller, Somerset - Wife
James (incorrect should be Joseph) Luxton Chappell, abt 1878, Lambeth, Surrey - Son
Robert George Chappell, abt 1876 Lambeth, Surrey - Son
William Frederick Thomas Chappell, abt 1875, Lambeth, Surrey - Son
Mary A. Ferguson, abt 1812, Queenboro, Kent, England - Aunt
Unfortunately I've really struggled to find any earlier definitive Census references to my William Henry Chappell.
Hoping someone can help.

I see what you mean ::)
Do you have any info from William's 1871 marriage ie. address/occupation/age/father's name & occupation/any marriage witnesses who could be relatives?

Hi Joe,
Thought this was too much of a coincidence, he could well be related, (maybe even the father of your William).
1841 census ref HO107 488-03 folio 24 page 8: West side of New Street, Deptford
Hy Wm Chappell age 30 lighterman
Richd Chappell age 38 lighterman
Mary do age 30
George do age 8
Rebecca do age 5
Henry do age 3
Wm do age 10 months
all born in county

Thanks for this Carol. Looks really promising. Presumably Mary's the wife & either Henry or Richard the father.

Hi Joe,
It's difficult to be certain of family relationships on the 1841 census, it's not much more than a list of names and ages. It looks as though Richard and Mary could well be the parents of the children. It might help you to post a request for an 1851 look up for these people, even if it eliminates them from your search. Relationships are shown in 1851, so it would confirm the family grouping. This address in 1841 was in St Nicholas parish, in Deptford. Hope this helps,
xx Carol

Not sure if you have made any progress with this so here is William Henry's marriage in case you shouldn't have it ...............

I wonder if this marriage entry from the IGI might be relevant:
Thomas Chappel and Harriett Ferguson 20 September 1832
St John the Evangelist, Lambeth
(re the 1881 census entry which shows an aunt - Mary A Ferguson)
I think this may be the 1841 entry for them:
HO107 488-8 folio 18 page 29, Effingham Place, Deptford
Thos Chapel age 38 labourer not born in county
Harriett do age 32 born in county
George age 6 not born in county
John age 11 months not born in county
I can't find the family in 1851, which should show if William is with them.
Just spotted this christening on the IGI:
William James Chapple
chr St Nicholas, Deptford 26 October 1845, parents Thomas and Harriet
I know it's the wrong middle name, but could possibly be your William.

When Robert George CHAPPELL (clerk & traveller) of 168 Mortlake Rd, Ilford, Essex joins the army in Dec 1915 he gives his next of kin as father William Henry CHAPPELL of 50 Heber Road, East Dulwich so he was still alive then.
Still couldn't identify him in 1891/1901 or even the 1911 index from this (just in case there was a further clue anywhere) although found Elizabeth LETCHFORD nee LOCK earlier (1871 Camberwell says she born Aller Somerset. There is a Betsy with father Vincent born Aller Somerset - same place as Mary LUXTON - in 1851 census Aller Somerset which would fit). Elizabeth was the widow of Edward LETCHFORD.
Am now wondering if this could be William Henry (as James) but can't see how Edward TIMMS fits in at the moment ???

James CHAPPELL head mar 57 comission traveller b.Deptford
