Title: Marsh Lane, Erdington
Post by: TracyL on Monday 06 March 06 08:56 GMT (UK)
Is anyone able to tell me who may have lived at Laburnum Cottage, Marsh Lane, Erdington in 1905?  The address doesn't seem to exist in 1901, but is given as a birth address in 1905.

Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jayne

I have visited the area just once as part of this research.  My grandfather was born at that address and then given up for adoption.  As far as I could tell, the whole of the road was much newer houses.  I know from an old map that there was a large house (Grove House?) and a Laburnum Lodge towards the bottom end (where there are a few shops), but no sign of those now.

Although I know the names of his real parents (I have his birth certificate) I cannot get much further.

Laburnum Cottage was given as the birth address, but his mother's address at the time of registration was given as Leamington.

I have since discovered that the owner of the property in 1905 was someone called Maurice Unna - which means nothing to me.  It also, of course, doesn't mean that he was the person living there.

I did think it may have been a place for unmarried mothers or something like that but can't find anything about it at all.

Anything you think may help would be gratefully received!

Tracy  :)

Tracy,
I travel down Marsh Lane virtually every day.
At the bottom of Marsh Lane, it runs into Station Road, There are a series of large terraced houses built c 1900 and, if my memory serves me, some of them have names.
Next time I go down Marsh Lane I will look to see if there is a Laburnum Cottage.
There are still shops at the bottom end.

Tracy,
Sorry to give you bad news but, i went down Marsh Lane today,  there is no Laburnum Cottage in Marsh Lane.
Apart from those few terraced houses most of the properties are from the 1930s onwards.
