Title: Churwell Isolation Hospital
Post by: em on Monday 06 March 06 07:46 GMT (UK)
My partner believes his mother was a matron at Churwell Isolation Hospital at about 1940.  For some years he has been trying to comfirm this information.  Can anyone confirm that this hospital existed, and does anyone have access to any staff records?

Her name was Mary Ann Cregan.

Regards

Hi,

Yes there definitely was a smallpox isolation hospital at Churwell.

The site is currently a field occupied by horses & is visible from the A643 Elland Road at the far end of the allotments.

I remember  churwell hospital well . i used to pass it when abandoned going to grange farm . .back in the early 50s it was abandoned and consisted of  one story buildings  with  appeared to be  asbestos roofing  out side were  the metal hospital beds  abandoned and left to rust . To get to the site there was a path halfway down churwell hill  . theres  a lasge  brick and timber detatched house on the left i think its  a doctors surgury  if you pass there  you will find the path at the end of the road that lead to the hospital .
