Title: CENSUS LOOK-UP 1841 - BERKS
Post by: maggie2005 on Sunday 05 March 06 19:04 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am looking for the Gayler's and would be most grateful if there is anyone who can look up on the 1841 census

Father William Gayler born 1781 Clavering Essex
Mother Elizabeth
Daughter Elizabeth born 1816 Bray
Son Thomas born 1818 Bray
Son Edward born 1822 Bray

I have picked the family up on the 1851 census where William was living in Warfield, with his daughter Elizabeth at the Four Horseshoes.  Edward was married to Catherine Cox born 1820 at Pangbourne together with their children all living at Keynsham.

Regards
Maggie

Hello,
I have the 1841 census, and will have a look for you.  I have had a look at the 1847 Post Office Directory for Berkshire and found your William Gaylor (spelt with an 'o') under the Traders section still living in Warfield at the 'Four Horse Shoes'.
Cheers,
Paula.

Hi again,
I found the Gaylers in the 1841 census.  It is written as below:

Parish of Warfield
Place - The Horse Shoes

William Gayler          55  ? Victual?   born in county - no
Elizabeth  Gayler      60  no occupation  born in county - no
Elizabeth  Gayler      25  no occupation  born in county -  yes
Charles    Gayler       26 occupation - lab  born in county - yes

and there is a whole list of people who were staying at the inn/pub.
Regards,
Paula.

Thank you very much for this Sue, presumably the 1st Sarah and James would have died.

On the Essex records site there is a Will for Henry Gayler a Butcher of Clavering dated 1696, it would be wonderful to tie the family back to this.  The Will mentions children Thomas inheriting all of the freehold land and with token legasies to Henry - John - William - Elizabeth- Bridget- Martha and Anne.
Only the one name of William in my family though.

Thanks again for the information and it is extremely helpful and has definitely set me off again to want to find out more about the family in Essex

Regards
Maggie
