Have been staring at page after page of the 1861 Devon census looking for my family of Kingwells and a related line of Kessell. After looking at a couple of hundred pages (actually I think it is more like a couple of thousand ... I am in denial :)) I have come to the conclusion that these people must have been abducted by aliens or out in the middle of nowhere having a gossip when the census was taken. :-\
Does anyone have any idea of where to find a street map of Plymouth from about the 1850s on? Did find one but the more i enlarged it to read the names on the streets the less i could read. I want to be able to highlight the streets that my ancestors lived in to get an idea of the areas that i should look more closely at before I decide that they weren't in Plymouth in 1861.
Thanks
Jaki

Hi Jaki cheryle.f here i,m sitting doing nothing in particular at the moment....again,do you have first names for the kingwells that your looking for.I could have a scout for you and see if i come up with anything.Sometimes you can be staring at something for hours and not even see it...i know i've been there. I cant promise anything but a fresh pair of eyes and all that....and it's good practice for me.I may get to be a veteran yet.

If you will send me your email address I will scan to you a large town plan of Plymouth in 1899. It is much too large to post on this site. I will not be able to do this before Tuesday by the way.

Hi Cheryle
That would be great if you could have a look.
This is the information I have in 1851. They were at 6 Coxside Green.
Richard B. KINGWELL Head M M 35 Plymouth, Devon Printer and Glazier
Sarah KINGWELL Wife M F 34 Plymouth, Devon
Charles H. KINGWELL Son U M 6 Plymouth, Devon
William J. KINGWELL Son M 6 Plymouth, Devon
Ellen J. KINGWELL Daur F 1 Plymouth, Devon
In 1881 this is what I have. They were at 8 Vintry St
Sarah KINGWELL Wife (Head) M Female 63 Plymouth, Devon, England
Frederick KINGWELL Son U Male 24 Plymouth, Devon, England Seaman
I have Charles Henry's birth certificate and they were at 22 Lower St in 1844
As Richard was a Painter I found what I believe to be more addresses for the family in the Historical Directories.
1852 – 3 Higher St Plymouth (1852 Directory of Plymouth, Stonehouse, Devonport, Stoke and Moricetown)
1864 – 3 Salem Place Plymouth (1864 Directory of Plymouth, Stonehouse, Devonport, Stoke and Moricetown)
Looks as if they moved around Plymouth a lot.
Thanks

Hi Jaki,
Just saw your info.
ref addresses,
although I dont have access to any of the census
Higher Street, there was a place later called Higher Street Flats,
also Salem Street Flats,
I also notice you are interested in the names Bulley and Bunce, those names are still around in Plymouth,Devon.
I have a Bulley in my tree.
Also Coxside Green, havent heard the green bit, must be before my time,
but Coxside is not too far away, from the other addresses.
I will have a dig around for you in the coming week,
talk soon,
regards

Hi bennett
Thanks for that. Much appreciated.
The Bulley in my tree was Sarah Bulley born about 1817 in Plymouth. She married someone White/Waite before marrying Richard Kingwell in about 1840. Wonder if there is any connection?

Hey Fitty - I live in Leeds - where are you looking for ?
Hi Kathy, I,m a Hunslet Carr girl :o)
I was looking for a map of Leeds to tie in with my 1841 Census.

Hi Jaki
It is an interesting point that everyone didn't take part in the Census if they didn't feel inclined to.
My own Mother once told me that she and my Father purposely went out on the day of the census, as they considered it a cheek to be asked for personal details.
I can only guess that that would have been the 1921 Census but I haven't bothered to check to find out. I shall certainly be gone myself by 2021.
Regards
Robert

Old maps can be bought at the following website £2.10 each for a certain number of places. Some of the print is quite small but just readable and good value also. I have bough Plymouth North 1893 and it is clear and readable.

Hi Jaki...sorry its been so long didnt know whether you still required any help but will post anyway.1871 found Frederick in 8 High Street Exeter in some sort of school Civil Parish of St. Lawrence Age 12. In 1871 Living in ST.Martins Fields Westminster Frederick Kingwell 52 .... Eliza50......emma22....Amelia16....Louisa14...florence11....Albert8...and brother Richard 55 married born Plymouth Devon. The only Sarah Kingwell at any where near the correct age is Sarah Kingwell 57 ....living St Andrews HIgh Street Devon who is a married woman but living with Lodger of 57 Elizabeth Manning but she was born Cornworthy didnt know if that rings any bells so have included her. our sarah was supposed to be 63 in 1881...1891 shows a Sarah Kingwell age 74 Widow....Pauper...Living in devon area of Charles ...but states born Totnes Devon ..but have included her as well as i know that places of birth are not always reliable and seem to change from census to census even though they are the same people. It looks like Richard actually left his family before the 1871 census because 10 years later in the 1881 census he's still living with his brother Frederick, who by now his wife Eliza is not there but all his children are still living at home and are 10 years older. But there is also a new addition of Rose who is 7.Maybe his wife died.richard is still a painter. Jaki, I am Frederick A Kingwell in Tacoma, WA. My Great grandfather was Henry Kingwell from Devon. His son was my grandfather Albert Kingwell born 1873 Devon, England. My father was Frederick Henry Kingwell born 1901 in Devon Plymouth England. I am searching for information on them if you have run across any. I am 76 years old and would appreciate any help! Let me know if we are related.

Stumbled across a message from yourself back in 2005 indicating you have loads of info on Bulleys. I have an Elizabeth Bulley born about 1720 in Ipplepen (extrapolated from her later marriage information, 1743 in Ipplepen to John Bickford). Her mother was a Margery Unknown (info got from Margery Bulley's will leaving land to grand daughter) who, obviously, married an unknown Bulley. Have you a Margery marrying a Bulley sometime before 1720 in and around Ipplepen? Longshot I know, but worth a shot.
