In the 1817 directory of Hull I found two men with the surname "Unthank" - both master mariners. A search of a surname frequency database told me there are only 333 Unthanks in Britain today. There are none in the current Hull phone book. Has anyone come across this name - was it local to the East Riding?

I have found just one UNTHANK in the Humberside area on the 2002,2003,2004 electoral rolls, (in Beverley).

On the 1851 census for Sculcoates there is just one Unthank listed and he was born in Windsor/Berkshire.

Thanks for those - it must make it much easier to trace your ancestors when you have a name like that!

Just had a look in the York area (BT) phone book and there are 2 Unthanks listed, one actually in York and the other in a village just outside.

For those interested in the Unthanks
The following were all publicans in West Hartlepool
Joseph Unthank - Musgrave Street 1873 - 1881
Hannah Unthank Tower Street 1896 - 1918
Margaret Unthank Tower Street 1921
Mrs J Unthank George Street 1894
Joseph Unthank - Stranton 1868
Stephen Unthank - Stranton 1881

While searching kirk session minutes for a one place study, I've come across a Mary Ann Unthank who was 'lately come' to the parish of Walls, Orkney, according to a minute of 1 July 1841 . She was the wife of William Wilson and had been a member of a Methodist church in Hull for two years. William was from Orkney, almost certainly from Walls, and could well have been a seaman. Their marriage appears to have been registered in the Sculcoates registration district, East Yorkshire, in the 2nd quarter of 1841 and they were recorded in Walls at the time of the 1841 census, both aged 20.
William and Mary Ann are no relation to me but the very unusual surname has intrigued me and I hope that someone may "recognise" Mary. There is a baptism record for a Mary Ann Unthank, 27 Dec 1818, Sculcoates, daughter of Robert and Susannah, which may be her.

Unthank is also a small village near Penrith in Cumbria.
