hi everyone,
after looking at the irish guardsman in his splendour, beautiful colours i wonder if you could do the same for my uncle jack andrews of the welsh guards, it is one of my favourite photo's but i would love to see it in colour, cheers kali.(http://)
-
Hi Kali,
You've just reminded me that I have one more
to post on the Irish Guard.
Thanks,
Tomkin
-
my pleasure tomkin,
you have done some really brilliant work on the irish guardsman, amazing! kali.
-
Hi Kali,
I'll post this first effort. I'm going to have my dinner.
I'll look at again with fresh eyes, but I'm not a happy bunny.

colour scheme for tunics, plumes etc here.

Hi Kmo,
Thanks mate, I've already got that and it still
omits a lot of detail. My worry is with the original photo,
the detail is coming out flat as though it has already been manipulated. i have a chat with Kali when my son comes off the web.
( he's just nipped to the loo.)

tomkin, you may not be a happy bunny but i am an ecstatic bunny your efforts are more than apreciated, it is a lovely pic and now enhanced by your colouring, thank you very much for your expertise, you are all very kind people giving your time helping us not to clever computer illiterates, thank you, kali
-
kmo,
good of you to come up with that site, it does help, thanks, kali.
-
Hi Kali,
I wondered if the photo that you had posted had been manipulated.
There are some elements that seem rather flat. If it has, can you re scan the original and post it again. If this is the case then I hope we can do better.
As for Jack, I would rather he was fighting on my side than against.
Anyway, let us know and it's been a pleasure to help in any case.
Tomkin
-
thanks tomkin,
but no the only one to tinker with it has been me (oh dear) i would love to have the gift that you seem to have in restoration, but anyway my andrews family jack & his 2 brothers his father and gfather were all guardsmen all over 6ft and served for thier whole working lives in the armed forces, i feel very proud of them, and you have enhanced the photo extremely well, thank you, kali.
-
Hi Kali,
You are right to be proud, that is why we like to do the best
that our poor skills allow. Can you rescan the original photo?
Tomkin
-
tomkin this is a photo of jacks gfather, quatermaster colour sgnt 1st batalion the welsh regiment, would you like to try this.(http://)
-
Hi kali,
Forgot to say, if you haven't the original, then I still have to
tweek the one I posted to you.
Now go to bed.
Tomkin
-
Hi Kali,
If you post it mate, it will be a pleasure.
Tomkin
-
it seems that the file is to large, i will try again tomorrow, cheers , kali, and good night.
-
.
-
that is a lovely picture with the green added, i cant fault you, anyway i rescaned the original photo for you to see, and thanks for them lovely pic's, i am afraid i am having a problem scanning the picture of jacks gfather ( not getting a clear picture ) i will have to try something different, thanks again, kali.(http://)
-
Hi Kali,
Final tweak. I have tried to make his arm more natural
instead of like a piece of flat cardboard which is due to the loss
of detail in the original. Also popped a border around.
Keep trying with the scanning mate, practice makes perfect.
Take care,
Tomkin

Hi Kali,
What happened to Jacks Gfather?
Tomkin
-
hello tomkin,
i have tried & tried it just will not send, i must be doing something wrong but i dont know what it is? chers kali.
-
Hi Kali,
How are you mate?
1) Have you got the photo scanned.
2) if so, is it on file on your computer?
3) if so what size is it.
Any confusion let me know,
Tomkin.
-
hello tomkin, not fed up of me yet? yes all of that and the size is 18.5 km i think that should be fine? but not a chance of posting i keep getting file to large, below are two more andrews boys, first francis andrews (ignore the name on the photo it should say francis) (tank regiment) below is jacks brother charlie andrews welsh guards, unfortunatly i do not have a pic of charlie in uniform. cheers, kali.
-
Hi Kali,
If it is 18.5Km then thats one hell of a distance, again
check the size mate (18.5kilometers ). Is it 18.5Mb?, if so go to file menu,
then down to save as, and save as a jpeg. alter the quality until the file
size is below 500kb. I am rushing this as I am going to bed. (its
1:40a.m) I will speak to you later. All the best mate,
Tomkin
-
thank you tomkin, will have a look at it now, have a good kip you deserve it, kali.

-
Hi Kali,
Very little needed doing to this except a quick
colour. Don't hesitate to correct any mistakes, it doesn't take long
to alter and we prefer to get it "right".
I suspect that you have cut something off, on the left?
I have left the background as it is and removed the wrong name.
Again if you want any thing different just shout.
Tomkin
-
Hi Kali,
Wasn't quite sure what you wanted with this, so I
removed the frame and put the subject in a new one.
I also didn't know that you were supposed to grow your
own busbys. Gawd, I wish my hair was still like that.
Again if there is any thing you do not like let me know.
Tomkin
-
thanks tomkin they are great, no alteration needed. the pic had been cut before i recieved it i have no idea what was taken out, the pic of gfather jabez i give up on i have tried everything you suggested and still cannot send also attempted to send it to you as a personal message but that doesn't work either. anyway thank you tomkin your a true artist, cheers, kali.
-
Hi Kali,
I thought that the picture had been cut. I eas hoping to get his stripes on.
Ah well.
I am determined to get a picture of Gfather. He has got the same name as one of my ancestors. In the folder where the picture is stored, find the picture, put
the cursor on it and right click. a menu will open, go down the menu to properties.
left click on properties and a box will appear giving all the information that applies
to the photo. Look at the size and the format and let us know all the info'
Tomkin
-
Hi Kali ,
This is an example of what you should see.
We are interested in the type of file, & the size.
These are the properties the 1st photo that I posted today.
Tomkin
-
i have just had a kind offer from keith bates, i have mailed the photo to him and he is kindly going to put it on the forum, (here's hoping), but thanks tomkin i will go into properties and have a play about and see if i can learn anything, doh!! cheers, kali.
-
Hi Kali,
Good for you mate. Less of the playing though,
this is a serious business. Now where did I put my
colouring book and crayons?
Tomkin
-
hello tomkin, hello keith,
i have tried just about everything, i have emailed photo to keith, i have tried reducing the photo in size, i have cropped the photo to its minimum, nothing seems to help. it will not post! the photo is type, paint shop pro 7.
size 18.4 mb (19,350,500) bytes
i think the time has come for me to give up and save your time, maybe in the future, perhaps, possibly, who knows, i may get it posted,
anyway can i say a big thank you for what you have done and the patience you have shown while dealing with a thicko, cheers to you both, kali.
-
hi Kali,
It's the size mate. !8. 4 mb is huge. It's 35 times bigger
than rootsChat can take. Open it in whatever software that
you use. when you see it, go to the file menu on the top tool
bar ( on the left) left click on that and a menu will open,
go down to "save as " left click on that.
A new window will appear. give the photo a new file name.
anything will do as long as you know what it refers to.
In the format window make sure that it reads Jpeg. then click save.
as soon as you do that an option screen will appear.
look at the bottom left, where it says size.
you can alter that size by sliding the quality arrow to the left or the right.
do that till the size is approx 400k. then press O.K.
you will now have another picture in your files with the new name that you
gave it but in a much smaller file size that RootsChat can accept.
just post it as normal.
Keep trying mate, we'll get there,
if in doubt, shout,
Tomkin

-
Hi Kali,
Well done mate. Next I think we will discuss how to alter the physical
size i.e height and width so that it fits more comfortably on the screen.
You had the same problem as every one else.
There are two types of size!!. When people talk of the size, they never mention
which size they are talking about and so it can get very confusing.
Always remember to rename the file before you change the format.
That way you will keep your existing file and create a new one in the new format.
If you don't rename, you will change the old file to the new one & the old file will
then cease to exist.
As I have shown you, you are literally copying the old file and giving the new
file a new name and a new format.
I think that is enough for now,
Again well done Kali,
Tomkin
-
cheers tomkin, i will practise a bit more now i have the basics.
-
Hi Kali,
Just a quick example. you will see that the jpg size is roughly
the same but I have altered the other "size"
Tomkin
-
By the way, is it Welsh or Welch?
tomkin
-
i wonder if i will ever be an expert? i don't think i have that long left.
don't ask me when but the welch changed to welsh at some point in the regiments history.
-
just looked at wickepedia, this is what it says:-
the welch regiment founded in 1881, the name changed at the ammalgamation into the royal regiment of wales in 1969.
not to be confused with the royal welch fusiliers
-
Hi Kali,
Colour job. Crude but I hope you like it nonetheless.
Tomkin
-
tomkin,
thank you very much, i really wasn't expecting you to colour the photo but now that you have i think it is spot on i love it so thank you once again, all the very best to you, kali.
