Can anybody indentify what this Uniform is please? I have spent ages looking at cap badges on the internet, and can't decide which one it is. ??? He lived in Edinburgh, but was originally from Glasgow.
Hope somebody can help,
thanks in advance,
millerina :)

Hi Mack,
He was James Pollock, born in 1872 in Glasgow, but lived in Edinburgh.

Hi Millerina,
If he lived in Edinburgh, do you know if he also joined up there? I don't know if you have tried this but if you contact the The Royal Scots in Edinburgh and send the photo they might be able to help both with the badge & uniform. I contacted duncan.macdonald@dft.gsi.gov about my grandfather & he was very helpful. Also have you tried to identify the tartan he is wearing, that might give you a clue as to what the regiment was. Suggest you try the hunting tartans as more likely than the dress tartan.
Good luck

Hi Sukie,
Thanks for the advice, I think I'll try emailing them the picture. :) I don't know if he joined up in Edinburgh, I have just looked through my info and found that in 1899 he was a Lance Sergeant in the Royal Scots, and based at Maryhill Barracks in Glasgow. I know that he changed regiment after that, I don't know which to though! I think the picture was taken in 1919, so I don't think he was with the Royal Scots at that time, its not the same cap badge as far as I can tell. I've looked through some tartans, I haven't yet found a match.
Thanks for the advice :) :)

Hi Millerina,
Without being absolutely certain, I would say it's the badge of the Gordon Highlanders. I've had a look at various websites showing cap badges and couldn't see any others that looked like it. I'll now try and check out the tartan.

hiya mill,it looks like the badge of the cameronians or isles suggestion[gordons] i have a feeling that james didnt serve overseas as a senior NCO,i cant find a james pollock with the rank of CQMS or CSM in the medal rolls, thats the rank of the man in the picture,i think that bloke in the picture may be lieutenant james pollock, this is one for malcolm on the great war forum,if he cant find him, then nobody can,can you post it over on the GWF,the gang on there love new pictures, mack

Isles and Mack,
Thanks very much for your suggestions :), it could well be either the Cameronians or the Gordons. In fact, the Cameronians is ringing a few bells in my head at the moment, I am sure I have heard mention of them before, but can't remember why. The closest match to the cap badge that I could find online was for the Scottish Reserve Regiment (a thistle), though I couldn't find anything out about the regiment itself, and I don't remember ever having heard mention of it before, so I'm not convinced. Both your suggestions sound more likely.
I'll post it over on the GWF, thanks for the tip. :) :)
Many thanks again,

hiya mill, are those buddies of mine on the GWF looking after you ok,mack

Hi :)
The peeps on the GWF are great, they mostly all say that he was a Cameron Highlander, though Gordons and Cameronians keep being suggested too. Well at least I now know it is one of the three! ;D I think I'll stick with the majority verdict for the time being though. ;) ;D Thanks for all the suggestions.
