Hi All
I am trying to help a friend here in Australia who is new to both genealogy and computers.
We have found her ancestor in the 1881 census
John Ridley Head of household aged 52 occupation Vicar of Norton.
In the household his wife - Frances Ridley aged 55 maiden surname possibly Antrobus
Son Frank Ridley aged 18 occupation Solicitors Articled Clerk and daughter Florence Ridley aged 10 scholar plus three servants.
My friend is descended from the son Frank.
Could anyone help us locate maybe what Church? The address on the census is The Vicarage, Norton, Durham, England.
We would also like to track this family in the census but have not been able to locate the family on the 1861,1871 or 1891 census on Ancestry.com.
We have possible marriage for John Ridley and frances Antrobus in June quarter 1860 and possible births for Francis in Dec quarter 1862 and Florence dEc quarter 1870 ( these from free BMD)
Prior to sending to England for these certificates we would like to be able to find them on the census and would also really like some more detail about his time as Vicar of Norton.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, as we are not sure where to go from here.

Hello from a very cold but sunny day in Co Durham. I have a list of the vicar's of Norton-on Tees and it says that the vicar was John Ridley 1870 and followed by L J Mortimer in 1886. In the graveyard there is a cross (broken) In memory of John Ridley priest for 16 years vicar od d. June 11 1886 age 58 years. So going by those dates he should be on the 1871 census for Norton-on Tees. (near Stockton-on Tees) Adamand

I went to look him up in my 1865 coppy of Crockford's Clerical Directory. He was not in Norton at that time. However, looking at the birth places of his children he was in Worsthorne for quite some time. In 1865 the curate at Worsthorne, Burnley was "W Ridley" no other details. May be no connection but it is an odd coincidence.

Hi All
thank you all so much, I am overwhelmed by all the responses.
I will now take the time to read them all properly, but wanted to immediately thank you all. My friend will be absolutely delighted.

Hi All
I have emailed your replies to my friend and she is also absolutely delighted. It will obviously take us a couple of days to sort all the info out, but in the meantime,
could I please get some clarification on a couple of points?
The church where John Ridley was vicar was St. Mary's at Norton - on Tees?
Do you think that in the 1861 census he was married to a first wife? Namely Fanny Turner?
I had found on IGI children of a Walton Ridley and Margaret Hope, so it seems highly likely this is our John Ridley's father?
It is hot and dry in Oz today, so I hope you are all not too cold on the other side of the world.

Hello Noells. Yes St Mary's Norton-on-Tees is the correct church and that is where his gravestone marker is. It is a lovely Saxon church overlooking the village green and duck pond. Go to http://www.google.co.uk/ and type in Norton St Mary, Duck pond, Norton, Norton Green or any variations of those and you will see quite a few photographs. Adamand

I am afraid I do not know Cheshire well enough to say whether Bollington and Turner Heath are close. One way to differentiate between the wives will be birth place and age. Have a look on www.genuki.com which should say where they are with luck. However you said you had a possible marriage in 1860?? Cold but bright here in Sussex - we never seem to get any of the snow!

Frances/pet name Fanny, the wife of John Ridley, appears on the censuses 1851-1881 to be consistently the same age, if not exactly the same place of birth
Cheshire
Turner Heath Cheshire
Bollington Cheshire x 2
So the 1860 marriage of Frances Antrobus would be consistent with the censuses
Marriages Jun 1860
Antrobus Frances Macclesfield 8a 198
RIDLEY John Macclesfield 8a 198
Frances/Fanny appears to have outlived John as I think she is lodging in Bath Somerset in 1891 - census entry is Fanny a widow living on her own means born Prestbury Cheshire (which is in Macclesfield Registration district, as is Bollington). She is lodging with a Mary E Inson widow also born Prestbury but slightly older. I am fairly sure this was actually Mary E. Hinson her older widowed sister who appears on the 1881 census in Hampshire as Mary E. Hinson born Prestbury.
I can't see on FreeBMD a marriage of a John Ridley to a Fanny Turner between 1851-1861. If John Ridley was married to another Fanny by 1861 then he couldn't have married Frances Antrobus in 1860.

Hi Sillgen and Valda
My apologies - I stupidly read the 1861 census details from Sillgen as Fanny Turner. I did not even think of Fanny as Frances!!
Also had no idea Turner Heath was a place in Cheshire. so thought her surname was Turner, born in Heath. Of course now you explain it to me I can see my error. No wonder I could not find any record of this marriage last night while searching the IGI.
Valda, the additional details from you are extremely helpful and certainly flesh out the family for us.
Once again I thank everyone who has helped with this information- to think that 3 days ago all we had here in Oz was the Vicar of Norton details from 1881 census.
My friend is planning to hopefully travel to England later this year, and would love to visit the places her ancestors came from. We are certainly now well on the way to achieving this aim thanks to all of you
Regards

From the BDM indexes
John Ridley married Frances Antrobus 2nd Qtr 1860 registration district Macclesfield, Cheshire.
1861 census Rev John Ridley, Curate of Worsthorne, born 1829 Kirklington Cumbria, with wife Frances born abt 1827 Turners Heath, Cheshire.
1881 census Rev John Ridley Vicar of Norton, Stockton, wife Frances born 1826, Bollington. two children:-
Frank Ridley born 1863 Worsthorne, Lancs
Florence Grey Ridley born 1871 Norton, Durham
John Ridley died 1886, Durham. Probate to John Brooke Ridley of Huntingdon. physician and Frank Ridley of Norton, solicitor.
1891 census Frances Ridley widow aged 65 (b 1826) lodger at lodging house 20 Bathwick Villas, Bath
1911 census Florence Grey Ridley spinster aged 40 is found with her brother Philip Walton Ridley a bank clerk born 1869, Cheadle, Cheshire.
Frances Ridley, widow, died 1905 in Bournemouth, Dorset, registration district Christchurch, probate to John Brooke Ridley MD (born 1861, Burnley, Lancs) and Frank Ridley solicitor, sons of the deceased, estate £50 18s 7d
There is a baptism of Frances Antrobus 16 Sept 1825, daughter of Philip Antrobus and his wife Mary in Prestbury, Cheshire.
All you need to do now is see the marriage certificate for Frances Antrobus and John Ridley in 1860 to make sure that the Frances in that marriage was the same one that was baptised by Philip and Mary in 1825 in Prestbury, and you have confirmed the identity of John Ridley's wife.
There are several John Ridleys and Frances Ridleys at that time.
If you're not familiar with an area where you are researching families, have a map handy, birth and marriage registrations became compulsory in 1837 with the enforcement of the Birth and Marriage registration Act 1836, and registration districts weren't always the same as the village in which people said they were born in census returns.
I hope this helps everyone.

Hello Noells,
Since in 1851 John Ridley was a student at Trinity College, Dublin, I think that this is he here about
