Title: BEARDS, Sussex
Post by: benzon on Friday 03 March 06 08:56 GMT (UK)
Anyone out there searching Beards in Sussex?  I have several in Hertfordshire who say born Sussex.  Trying to find some connections to a small group of Beards who were living and working in Hertford and Ware (East Herts) during the 1800s.

A long shot, I know.

Have just looked through the marriage registers for BEARD in Sussex and there are literally hundreds of them going back to at least 1560 in Horsham, 1552 in Herstmonceux and 1539 in Rye

Can you give some details of those that say 'born in Sussex' to see if we can locate them anywhere

Hi Chris

Sounds like certainly far more than in Herts then.  I am not sure that this lot connect to the line that I am pursuing but it is obvious to me that all the Hertfordshire Beards hailed from elsewhere cos there sure ain't many of them around here.

I have a James Beard bc 1823 (possibly Horstervane but I am wondering whether this is Horsted Keynes) who married a Catherine but she did hail from Herts and then there is a William Beard bc 1818 who married an Elizabeth.  I don't have a note of town but both were born Sussex.  Their son Robert however was born in Herts.  Both were sawyers on the 51 census.

Dont worry too much, the confirmation that there were hundreds of them in Sussex helps.

Cheers

Benzon,

I have done a lot of research on the Beards of Sussex, of which there are a handful of large family groups although I haven't yet connected them all together.

Your Herts Beards do go back to James born in Horsted Keynes in 1823.  This branch of the family I believe derive from ancestors from Horsted Keynes, Barcombe, Uckfield, Framfield, Buxted and Fletching (1500's).

Trust this is of assistance if you are still looking.

Regards.
