Hi Marrle

I can't give you any info on an estate near Sorbie but if you key in Sorbie on   old-maps.co.uk (http://old-maps.co.uk) then move East to grid ref 245055,547014  there is a Plantation there with Tower Cottage on its south end.

I know it doesn't answer your main question but at least it gives a definite place to start looking.

Hi Marrie.
Just found your post.
I am from the Varney family and have extensively researched them. My grandmother was Agnes Jane Varney, related to virtually all the Varneys in Scotland as they originated from Buckinghamshire. Migrated to Scotland about 1850.
Let me know if you would like any info on them.
Regards, Sheila Jackson.
