Would someone be kind enough to look up details.
This is my first attempt at Roots Chat
Many Thanks

Dear Ken,
I am afraid I have not got a definitive answer to your question, but in my search for Armstrong's on Tyneside I have come across the following birth records.
March Quarter 1911
James Armstrong - Newcastle 10b 69
William J. Armstrong - Newcastle 10b 114
September Quarter 1911
James H. Armstrong - Tynemouth 10b 630 (mother's maiden name DANCE)
William C. Armstrong - Newcastle 10b 34 (mother's maiden name BROWN)
December Quarter 1911
James R. Armstrong - Newcastle T 10b 84 (mother's maiden name ROBSON)
William Armstrong - Newcastle T 10b 161 (mother's maiden name RICHARDSON)
Unfortunately there were quite a few Armstrong families in the area - do you have any idea what his mother's maiden name might have been, or did he have much older brothers or sisters that might be entered on the 1901 census?
Even if you bought a birth certificate you would need something else like a name or address to prove you have the correct certificate.
Good hunting, and don't give up you will find it, probably when you least expect it.

Hi Ken,
This is definitely a stab in the dark, but could your grandfather have also been called James Armstrong? On the 1901 census for the Military Barracks, Barrack Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, St. Andrew & St Luke (Ref: RG13/4780 page 16) there is
James Armstrong, Single, aged 21, Private Soldier - Infantry, born Newcastle, Northumberland.
This really would be a long shot because I could find something like 66 James Armstrong's in Northumberland born between 1880 & 1890.
Keep hunting,
Patsy

Thanks Patsy
My fathers mother never married, so obviously her maiden name was Armstrong, she had 2 sisters & a brother that I know of, she was called Lillian and the sisters Annie & Ethel The brother I think was James William there may have been another sister. I know my fathers father was the head Market Keeper in Newcastles Grainger Market.
Again thanks for the help.

Hello again,
I have had a look at the 1901 census and can not find a Lillian Armstrong, but I have found this family which includes some of the names you mentioned.
1901 Census - RG13/4779 folio 135, page 15
3 Factory Yard, St Andrews, Newcastle, (district 5)
Mary Armstrong, head widow 50 - Newcastle
George T. Armstrong son single 27 French Polisher Newcastle

Joseph B. Armstrong son single 17 Moulder Apprentice Newcastle
Florence L. Armstrong dau. single 13 - Newcastle
William J. Armstrong son single 11 - Newcastle
Ethel M. Armstrong dau. single 9 - Newcastle
Edith M. Armstrong dau. single 7 - Newcastle
I was wondering if the Florence L. Armstrong might be Florence Lillian?
10 years earlier in 1891 the above family were living at 4 Camden Street, Newcastle.
1891 census - RG12/4212 Folio 15 pages 22 & 23 All Saints (District 11)

It also states the son George T. was deaf & dumb from childhood.

4 St. Andrews Courts (next to Pilgrim Street)
George Armstrong Head Married 36 Painter ???? Benwell
Mary Armstrong Wife Married 31 - Newcastle

Elizabeth Armstrong Dau. Single 12 Scholar Gateshead
George Armstrong Son Single 8 - Newcastle
Isabella Armstrong Dau. Single 6 Scholar Newcastle
Annie Armstrong Dau. Single 4 Scholar Newcastle
Agnes Angus Armstrong Dau. Single 2 - Newcastle
You would really need to check these details for yourself, because we all see something different in the squiggles!!!!!
I have found a birth record for a Florence Armstrong September quarter 1887 Newcastle 10b 62, but there is no hint of a second name of Lillian.
Good Luck with your search and I hope this does not send you along the wrong road.
Best Wishes, Patsy

Thanks Patsy
This is indeed part of my family. I can remember an Auntie Edie and I am sure my Grandmother was Florence Lillian. I am most grateful for your help,as I mentioned earlier this is my first attempt at finding past relations and it has surely given my wife and I the incentive to go further,
Perhaps you could let me know where you obtained the information.
Thanks again Ken A

Dear Ken,
Only too glad to be of help.
I paid the annual fee to joined the website ancestry.co.uk, because at first I was only using the 'pay per view' option but that was costing me too much! That website has all the census returns from 1851 to 1901 on-line, plus birth, marriage & death index references and these also include images of the actual pages so you can check details for yourself. It costs nothing to have a look and see if it is what you need to help you with your family searching.
I also joined the website Genes Reunited, and have had some great success in finding relatives, and have even met and made great new friends from some of the contacts.
Roots chat is full of very useful links, and as so many of us no longer live in the area our ancestors did it helps a great deal when you can't get to the relevant local library or records centre.
The International Genealogy Index (IGI) is also available on line and is free to use. This helps to trace the family back before the start of modern records which commenced in 1837. The 1881 census has been transcribed on that website.
There are lots & lots of good websites, and I am sure many people reading this can add their own favourite they have found most useful, but if all else fails try 'Google' it will always come up with something.
Do take it step by step, otherwise it is very easy to take the wrong path, and be prepared to sometimes buy the wrong certificates - most of us have a few that don't belong to our tree, even though we were sure it must be the correct one when we ordered it!
Good Luck with all your future searching, but be warned this is something you might find addictive - my husband gets fed occasionally and as for house work well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Ken I came across your search pages while looking for my own armstrong's from newcastle and my family is the same as the one you believe to be yours.
Florence Lillian born 1888 in Newcastle is my husbands grandfathers sister. There were were 11 children in total of George and Mary Armstrong on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census . Mary, Elizabeth, George, Isabella, Annie, Agnes Augusta, Joseph Burton, Florance Lilian, William J, Ethel Maud and Edith May. But I am pretty sure Florance Lilian married Frank Pearson in 1915 in Newcastle and a son George Pearson was born in 1917. If you have further info we could share please contact me
Best Wishes Joan

Hi Joan
It seems that Ken hasn't visited the site since March 06 (click on his name and you will see that info). Try sending a PM - if the email address hasn't changed it should get through to him.
