Hi compo.
It is my understanding that "of the parish" simply means they were residents of the parish at the time of the marriage. It doesn't necessarily mean they were born there. Do you have any other clues that might suggest they were born somewhere else?

Do you have any census information for either of them, this might give a clue.

Always worth looking in North Shields too as they often popped over the river. If you can get to the local record offices then you can search the transcripts of all the parishes in that area and you may be lucky. If you publish the names someone may do it for you. How did you find their marriage?

Do you know the names of their children? In 1851 in South Shields there is a Green family headed by an Ann age 55, with children called Margaret 15, James 12 or 13?, Maria 8 and Edward ? (age hard to read. Could be 27? he is a coal miner. ) That would make Ann about 20 at marriage which is possible. James may have died by then. It is worth a thought anyway.

Forgot to put the reference - HO 107 2399 F632
That particular Ann was born in Benwell, Northumberland. She is a widow and annuitant so that might mean her husband had enough money to leave a will. Possibly another avenue to explore. Do you happen to know what he did for a living?

That is interesting as both the Edward and the James fit into the census I found. I suppose Mary Ann could be married by then. Margaret and Maria do not fit though unless you missed them when looking at baptisms. Keep it on the back burner for the time being!

My ancestors married at St Paul's Jarrow in 1808 and then had their first 2 children christened at St Hilda's. 3x great grandma came fron Little Usworth according to the amrriage register. They seemed to flit around in those days as the family set off after 1810 to Chatham before presumably returning in the late 1820s...

My ancestors lived in North Shields, but baptised their children at St Hildas in South Shields. Some even travelled from their homes in Newcastle to St Hildas. The river was much less the psychological barrier than it is today.
I've heard tell that St Hildas was much favoured by seaman, but havent seen any evidence to back that up.
It's a fabulous church inside. Very decorative.

They also had an Ann baptised 10 Nov 1830 St.Hilda's d/o James and Ann Green.

A lot of my family were from South Shields and were seafarers, some of them were baptized, married etc in St Hildas. There were a few exceptions to the rule and they married in Tynemouth and Newcastle All Saints if thats any help.
