:D Looks like this saga has come to Bucks. ;D
I have now found a Marriage of Charles Cox and Julia Howe
Newport Pagnell Dec 1854 vol 3a pg 720.
I have Margaret Howe (b 1859) with mother Julia Howe.
Margaret goes on to have Frederick Cox as a partner? 1893 their son is born.
No reference of Fred and Marg marriage.
Do Charles and Julia have a Margaret?
Did Julia have a first husband, Joseph Howe?
Margaret keeping her older sisters surname?
Erm.... Argh... ;D

:D That's them fed and watered, now.
What a turn up, Tazzie..... :o
Oh my lordie!!! On that one posting there are 3 family lines...
HOWE - COX - BAKER
-
Lesanne.... you lucky :-X
We have been racking our brains because there are lots of local chemist's around this area all called Cox and Robinsons...how about that (cannot find any history about it yet!)
I have also found young Julia in 1871 if you want that one?
Tazzie
-
I'm going to put the 3 families and their links, just trying to put them together on here may pull it together. In fact it could be 4 as another crew were in Chemist trade????
-
HOWE family
1901 Margaret Cox/Howe 36 in Maidenhead

Julia 13, Elizabeth 9, Ellen 7, Rose? 4,
1861 Margaret Howe 2 in Kensington, with
Joseph Howe, 32,b Mitchelstown.
Julia, 29,b Somerset.
Thomas 9

Maryann 6
Juleanna? 5
1893 Margaret HOWE has paired up with Frederick COX for a birth. Maidenhead
1866 William COX marriage Letitia BAKER Lambeth

1881 William Cox widower. in Abingdon.
Did the sisters become orphaned after Julia widowed?
Who was Charles Cox's father?.....
Tanja, Valda, CP, and more, have helped so much in finding this info. The Cox brothers from Essex seemed to spread far and wide after the decline of Cronford ?Park Estate near Stock Essex in the 1820/30.
-
Just happened across a reference in The National Archives to a Jos. Howe.
It would appear that Bedfordshire & Luton Archives have a Medical Certificate regarding him dated 1853
Hope the link works - modified - pooh, no it does not so try:
http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp
Keyword = Jos Howe
Location of Archives = Bedfordshire and Luton Archives & Record Services
Your new finds are so exciting ;D

Hi Wendi,
No, didn't work. But I went into a2a site.
I have to think that this Joseph Howe is a coincidence, and all this family that goes with him!
-
Shame Lesanne...
Julia jnr in my posting is with a Harman family as niece not in Walthamstow, but what a coincidence with all those names the same.
Tazzie :(
-
How did I know that? I've got it somewhere in all my notes. Oh my.
-
I'm just going to put Simpson's as the other chemist?
Coincidence or what... :-\
-
Hi Tazzie, Keep looking at that family.. ???
You see, I just cannot find the marriage,
of my Frederick Cox b 1870 Ewell and Margaret Howe b 1859 Cardiff.
That Charles Cox, who was his father?
and William Robinson, how could he be nephew to both.
Where was Joseph pre '51?
It throws up so many questions...
Totally confuddled.. ;D
-
Hi Lesanne...
Been busy in Beds rellie AWOL in 1861... >:(
Which on do you want to look at let me know and I will go for it!!
Tazzie
-
It's Charles Cox background that would tye it together, Tazzie.
His father/grandfather ? Then the Baker family?
ooh 'eck.... ;D
-
Hi Lesanne...
Have a look at this.......
www.mkheritage.co.uk/mkm/stonystratford/docs/shops.html
It has photos of Cox and Robinsons chemists shops.
Still looking.....
Tazzie
-
;D Like the way teeth are carefully extracted. LOL Tazzie. ;D
??? Established 1760? Looked to me like Howe was the name of 1st chemist?
Perhaps I need to post for Chales further away?... Erm..
It certainly is interesting, just the way all the names came together. :)
I note your Harman.. good friends here by that name..
:D Thanks Tazzie.

Hi Lesanne...
Just found Joseph Howe was around in Stony Stratford in at least 1838 he is listed in Robsons 1838/1839 directory for Buckinghamshire. Trying to find his marriage.
Tazzie
-
Joseph Howe must have married Julia B4 dec 1854 (3a 720) that's when she married Charles Cox. Just thinking out loud. ;D
Reading through all the other info so I can get going after the homework session.
8)
-
Hi Lesanne all these names flying around....
You said Julia must have been married to Joseph b4 1854 but Joseph was a widow in 1851 and I have found two marriages for Joseph Howe Newport Pagnell area 1= 1846 2=1849.
Julia could have been his sister 10 years between them?
I might be getting confused now ....
also found Julia Jane Howe c 23 July 1825 dau of William and Hannah, Thats the one that married Charles. Might be worth posting a 1841 plea for Stony we may get some more names to work on.
Off for tea ......
Tazzie
-
Oh yes ! ...duh... didn't think of that ...
Joseph '15 and Julia Jane '26 - brother and sister.
Julia Ann '47 , Joseph's daughter.
If Julia '48 is niece to Charles Harman '19, then Charlotte '22 could be another sister.
Avis Harvey or harman '1796 :-\ )
Hannah Farmer or harman '1806 :-\ ) Married to brothers
Going to dish up.... ;D
-
Off we go again...
Avis Harvey (M-I-L) on '51 census.. ;)
found this.. on IGI
Joseph How (no E) marriage Elizabeth Harvey 22nd Sept 1814.
All Saints, Fulbourn, Cambridge.
:-\ ??? :-\ ??? :-\
-
Ok Elizabeth could fit...
b June 1850 Elizabeth Howe Newport Pagnell
d Sept 1850 Elizabeth Howe Newport Pagnell
b Dec 1852 Elizabeth Howe Newport Pagnell
d June 1856 Elizabeth Howe Newport Pagnell...
....will go back to 1851 to eliminate ...
Tazzie
-
Just found this:- 1881 John Ivens Married to Catherine. She just happens to be a Howe on IGI. Woohoo.... Julia's sister
-
Have sorted....
Elizabeth b June 1850 =on census 1851 dau of James
on census 1861 dau James O.K.
Elizabeth b Dec 1852 =nothing 1861
so Elizabeth d June 1856
Leaving Elizabeth -( Josephs wife) in 1850 I hope :-\
Tazzie
-
Good one Lesanne
Julia is with them in 1881 and their son Charles with her and William Robinson in 1871...just thought of something will be back.
Tazzie
-
Opps, wedding date for the above 2nd Dec 1857, Milton Keynes. John Ivens and Catherine Howe.
I'm sure there must be something in the Middx, B/p for James C Rubidge (1809).
I have found another coach builder in Middx, William C Rubidge (1821). These people are with William H Robinson and Henry Cox in High Str Stony in 1881.
I wonder if the C is Cox ??? funnier things have happened... ;D
-
:D That's a shame.. It's Charles..
-
Lesanne I know its late but wedding for who?
Also who are William and James Rubidge.....I need sleep or another coffee???
Tazzie
-
??? Where was Catherine Howe in 1851 aged 30 (b1830) ??? :-\
Oo Gawd it getting past my bedtime ;D
Harman/Cox/Rubidge/Ivens all from Middx. Howe/ Robinson from MK
Erm...
-
Rubridge with William Robinson in 1881.
The marriage date for Catherine and John Ivens.
Sorry, ;D belting away here before mine eyeballs shut.
-
HI again...
LIVERPOOL in answer to your question to Catherine!
Tazzie
-
What was she doing up there ;D :P
Anybody interesting ? ?
-
No the Smith's and that could go anywhere,
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Time to sleep before 2 year old wakes up at 5:30.
Will post tomorrow. Night
Tazzie
-
Oh dear, sorry to keep you. I know what it's like. Good night. ;D ;D
-
Rubidge with William Robinson 'cause Harriot is a Howe.
In Jun 1851 Marylebone. Also an Emma Rubidge.
Then found William George Rubidge not far from me in Steyning Dec 1848.
That could bring in your Harman's.
But, another night. ;)
-
Hi Lesanne.
Went to Cox and Robinson's chemist in Stony today. Spoke to a really nice lady who has worked there for 40 years. She said if I wrote out some questions she would ask the currant owner to help.... not bad eh!
Joseph and William were from Milton Keynes, Charles Cox from Middlesex so that could mean a wide search for his parents so I am hoping to find the marriage in C.M.K. library.
Cox and Robinson branched out into Oxfordshire -with Henry Howe in Eynsham and Northamptonshire with Oliver G Howe in Ramsey(boarders in 1871 with William Robinson) We may have found other children for Joseph Howe in Stony library but the mothers name is Ann,so maybe another Joseph (will check 1851 again).
Will have to bribe hubby and escape to check the records .
Tazzie
-
Good one, Tazzie. Beat Miss Marple anyday.
Your local paper might be interested in the end result!!
Looking at 1851. Joseph widow. Name for daughter Julia Ann.
Ann - wife Julia - sister. Thinking out loud again...
Combing the IGI and have soooo many notes.. ;D
-
Hi Lesanne
Going by IGI parents are William and Hannah will see what I can find.

Tazzie
-
Hi Lesanne,
I see you all made it back then (saw the photos)
Well my big trip to the library Stony Stratford reel 141.....AH!!!!!!!!
someone was already using it :'( ,he did ask what names to look out for but he was back in the early 1700's so not quite where we need BUT have no fear will go back this week and not just book a film reader I will beg to book the whole film!
Any way found Charlotte Howe's marriage to Charles Harman
Feb 3rd 1844 Charlotte dau of William Howe farmer
Charles son of Charles Harman attorney
Charles Cox died 3 feb 1864 age 35 and is buried in plot no 571 in the local cemetery(might be able to find).
Even some Cave lookups I promised to do are on that damn reel.
Oh well they never said this would be easy ;D
Tazzie
-
:D Well done you. Now you've got the Harman family.
Where did Charlotte fit in?
Just quickly going through my papers here and I can't get
back on the trail. Will be back tonite.
-
Hi
Charlotte looks to be Julia Jane's sister along with Hannah Farmer,
so far names tally to daughters of William Howe -a farmer.
will see what more I can find.
TAZZIE
-
William has Joseph, Hannah, Julia Jane, and Charlotte, as children.
Off to work now. Will catch up tonite.
-
Hi Lesanne ,
Sorry I'm late today -one of those Monday's
Anyway FILM 141 Stony Stratford........
I started with baptism's from 1840 onwards and found..
Julia Howe bap. 21 Oct 1846 f= Joseph m=ANN
Marian Howe bap.14 March 1848 f=Joseph m=Ann
Joseph William bap.10 June 1849 f=joseph m=Ann.
So there were other children but...
Marian died 1848 Potterspury
Joseph William died 1849 Potterspury
ANN died 1850 Potterspury.
Potterspury is now Northants but for a time it was the res. dist. for Stony.
I checked for their marriage in Stony but no luck at St Giles there are still some more on another reel for another church ( I think it's the one at the other end of the High St that only has the tower standing-its SPOOKY :o ) so will have to follow the trail from there.
Charles and Julia's marriage in 1854 in Newport Pagnell.......
I thought it might show in Stony BUT no so it must be in Newport Pagnell not just registered there.
Also Joseph Howe took over the chemist from Charles Loe who ran it
I found him in an old directory for 1831-32.
Will try to get back there on Wednesday (hubby has day off ).
Tazzie
-
You have been busy Tazzie 8) definately on a roll now.
Big art project going on at the mo for an exam, so my puta time is limited....
I'm just trying to make some order of all the family while off line.
Back later. Gotta go to work.
-
Lesanne ...Hit the wall!!!
Charles's marriage to Julia Newport Pagnell Dec 1854 cannot find in records at Newport Pagnell..... or Stony.... ???
Two Churches in Stony St Giles = west
St Mary Magdalene =east.
What I will do is take up the offer from the lady in Cox & Robinson chemist and i will draw up a letter with some questions...
i.e. Owners of shop.....
Charles = connection to family
anything esle you would like added?

-
Hi Lesanne....
Over a month has gone by...BUT it was worth the wait.
Today a delivery came from Cox & Robinson. I have about 8 pages on the history and the family.
Charles Cox.... b in London @ 1829 son of.....wait for it....
Joel Cox and his second wife Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was the daughter of George Cox.
Joel the son of Joseph Cox.
p.m me your details and I will send all the info to you.
Tazzie
-
This all sounds a really great find.
I wonder if it ties in with Joseph Cox our "Gt x loads" Grandad.
PM on it's way. Lesanne.
-
Hi Tazzie,
Got a brief connection with this saga. Brockliss and Robinson with Ivens.
Did the chemist ever get back to you?
I have re read this post so many times, there must be something in here that just keeps hiding ;D
Lesanne.
-
Hi ...Lesanne..
I emailed loads of stuff to you in April last year...did you not get it?
I did not get an e-mail rejection. If not let me know and I will look for the stuff. I need to see if I still have it.
So are they related to yours in some way?
Got lots of bits to look through will get back :)
Tazzie
-
Oh Taz, sorry for getting you to look, yep,
Found it under the mammoth Art project.. ::)
I had to re check the Cox family in London. I'm still none the wiser there and the Howe family, from Ireland? Hmmmm..
I have sooooo many notes/links/tree's. Everytime I re -read this, something else jumps out and off in another tangent. How time flies past.. :o
:-\ Just bringing in the Robinson name with Ivens and Blake.
Did you have a look at the Harman / Rubidge in Steyning?
Best wishes, Lesanne. :D
-
Hi Lesanne
I'm curious about the Rubidge you mentioned. Who is he/she? My grandmother's second marriage in 1926 was to Robert Harry Christoper Rubidge in Brighton and I know he had a number of brothers and sisters - could he be related to your Rubidge?
kindest regards
topo
-
I'm not sure on that Topo, I'll have to search it out. Steyning was a huge reg dist, in its time. I believe it took in some of Hove area.
At the moment I'm trying to make the Cox/Howe a solid connection and just can't find it, although all the names are there.... ;D
-
tried to post on t'other thread and it wouldn't let me ::) (deep sigh)
wasn't the other thread a spin off from this one ?

seeing as this thread was back in 206 and it is nearly 2009 a new thread might be in order
however
i cannot find a marriage for Fred & Maraget and wondered if she was already married, its a shame that you can't def. pin your hopes on to Margaret in Kensington (or can you and i have missed something)
mayhap Margaret left the formerly / late of Fred jnrs birth cert not unusual

although the new thread you composed was linked to this one it had a different question and i dont think it should have been locked, after all my replies have no meaning on this thread
and this thread is dated 2006 and should have been left as a reference point
if chatters dont want to help / reply they dont have to it is not compulsory and
now i am trying to make some sort of sense of it all and see where we are at

No wonder Bramble cleared off from here..... what a great person they got rid of....

from the other thread!
;) Where do I start..... :-\
In the beginning, a birth cert for Frederick William COX dropped through the letter box.. I have posted in several places trying to find his mothers ancestors. The more found, the more questions and has been put on the back shelf for ages.
I am hoping to find the marriage of Frederick's parents and the ancestors for his mum.
Info from birth cert:-
Frederick William COX

well don't scarp her entirely just put her to the back of your mind
James Baker was a Shoemaker and he was born in Essex
next door to their family was a William Baker an Ag lab and his little family
they can be foundon the ref i previously posted
(1841)

Charles Cox is an assitant chemist he may or may not be related to margarets husband Fred

and William Cox is the grandson of Gabriel Cox

by my powers of deduction i have worked out :~
Jospeh Howe has a sister Julia Jane
23 JUL 1825 Milton Keynes, (d/o William & hannha nee Piggott)
Julia Jane married Joseph's assistant Charles Cox
Julia Jane & Jospeh have a sister who married Mr RObinson and this sister had a child William circa 1838
Joseph m. Ann Harvey d/o Avis Harvey and had a daughter Julia
Ann died before 1851 and after (or during the birth of Julia )Q1 1847
Julia Jane had a broher who had a son Henry (was this Joseph? i don't think so i think t was another brother)
Henry Cox seems to be the cousin of Charles Cox

Hi Lesanne,
St John's church in Cardiff is lovely right in the city center between the market and the concert hall If you would like a photo ask Sapling to take a few. My brother sang a solo there at his school carol service many many moons ago There is a carved wooden screen between the congregation and choir. It has a splendid ring of bells too.

I am hoping to find the marriage of Frederick's parents and the ancestors for his mum.
Info from birth cert:-
Frederick William COX
9th November 1893
North Town Maidenhead Berks
(Reg) Cookham
Father:- Frederick Cox (Coachman)
Mother:- Margaret formerly HOWE
i think this is what Les is trying to find out and the other posts were to help
i mean we dont want duplications do we
we are not sure that the Margaret previously found is the correct one, with nothing to verify it , no marraige for Fred and Margaret
of course thismeans that the Margaret found could well be Les margaret
i guess shes looking for some sort of proof.
HOWE family
1901 Margaret Cox/Howe 36 in Maidenhead

Hi Sue, go ahead and post it

Well, I've just deleted all the links to the topics that were causing such a rumpus.
Then main bits I had posted up anyway.
Keep on about summarising.. How do you summarise census lists?
Phew..... what next....... :-\
14 hours I've been at this.... and still at the beginning.

Henry Cox and Cousin Charles Cox , hmm have we directly linked them to Fred or not ?

Jan 3 1878 Letitia Cox of Northcourt age 37
And this is from St Michaels Abingdon PRs
Baptism
10 Aug 1876 Elizabeth Cox dau of William and Letitia of Northcourt, occ coachman
Do we know any of their other children? Is it worth me searching to see if William remarried?
Sue :)
-
i guess to summarise censs give ref and ppl present details as you would and then for example if the details you have given be for the 1851 censsu then for 1861 say all as 1851 with additions / minus these ppl and still give ref so we can look for ourselevs and any changes in occupation p.o.b etc and so on and so on

Hello Lesanne,
Cut/Copy & Paste
Re your concerns about not being able to cut/copy and paste.
This discussion is currently on the Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests board - though the thread departed from the original 1861 census lookup request some years back.
I was under the impression that the facility to cut and paste had been disabled on all "Lookup Request" threads for copyright reasons. But I've had no problem in this post using Ctrl-C followed by Ctrl-V. Perhaps it is just 'right click' which is disabled? Perhaps the Board Moderator would advise?
Where to now?
I am a newcomer to this particular puzzle and I am finding it very hard to come to grips with it.
I've read this (Buckinghamshire lookup) thread and the (currently locked) thread in the Common Room.
For my own benefit, I've tried to sort out what are proven facts working back from you through your Grandfather (Gf COX) to his ancestors, what is likely but not (yet) proven, and what is speculative.
I hope you'll bear with me while I start again from scratch and go One Step At A Time trying to understand what proof there is for each step into the past.
Sorry to be such a pain but as you well know it's best to try to confirm the most recent generations before moving on to earlier generations just in case they might turn out not to be yours ...
In the (currently locked) Common Room thread, you say:
Marriage cert of Frederick William (jnr)26yrs to Florence Levitt.28yrs (wid).
22 November 1919. M’head Berks.
Residence at time .. 16, Cordwallis Street.
Wits. Daniel Weston (?Brides uncle?) Margaret Cox (grooms mother?)
This marriage is the only certain fact I have.
Just for completeness, I note from FreeBMD and other threads that Florence Louisa LEVITT was nee WESTON. It seems that she married John Blackburn LEVITT in 1915, they possibly had children, and JB LEVITT died in 1918 in WW1.
Perhaps you might transcribe the full marriage certificate of Frederick & Florence? Including the occupation of Frederick William COX, and the name and occupation of his father?
Do you have Gf COX's birth certificate? Does it have Ggf Frederick William COX & Florence (WESTON) LEVITT as his parents? Occupation of Ggf COX?
Do you have the death certificate of Ggf COX? Age?
You say:
I have a birth cert of a Frederick William Cox. 9 November 1893. North Town. M’head Berks.
Father.Frederick Cox. Cabman.. Mother. Margaret Cox formerly Howe.
Address? Informant?
Certainly looks likely for Ggf COX - but no proof.
You have what seems to be the above family in the 1901 census.
RG13 / 1158 / 105 / 34
30 Oldfield Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire
Frederick Cox head age 30 b Ewell, Surrey, occ cab driver
Margaret wife age 36 b Glamorganshire, occ housewife
Frederick William son age 7 b Maidenhead
Ralph Percy son age 5 b Maidenhead
This looks very likely to be Gggf COX and his son Ggf COX - but no proof.
Did Gf COX know his grandparents? Does he have any particular memories of them? Did he believe that his Ggm's maiden name was HOWE, and if so why? Does he remember any uncles, aunts, cousins etc (e.g. an Uncle Ralph??) which might provide leads and help prove that you have the right family? Does he remember any HOWE relatives?
Do you or your parents have any relevant relatives whom you could trace backwards and possibly find some leads?
You've said re Gf COX:
He also has a watercolour picture of a soldier wearing a bearskin, big furry hat?? and says the soldier is a lieut col retired. He believes that soldier to be his dad.
Perhaps you could scan that and the army experts could make suggestions? Though there is, I think, no proof (yet) that the picture is of a relative.
Your thread at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,54029.0.html
has some interesting material re buttons, medals, ribbons etc which Gf COX believes to be his father's. Could you scan these? Have you followed these up? I think you said you had his service history from the number on one of these artefacts. Could you provide the details?
I think I recall that somewhere it was mentioned that 16 Cordwallis St (Ggf's residence at the time of his marriage) had some connexions with other COXs?? Could you remind of us of these?
Well, as I said, I'm sorry to be such a pain but it really would be good to be able to confirm that Frederick William COX b 1893 in Maidenhead IS your Ggf as the very first step!
Very best of luck,
JAP
PS: If the Common Room thread is activated, perhaps a Mod could move this post to it?
-
Hi Lesanne,
Here is a list of some of your other relevant (and possibly/probably relevant) threads!
I don't think I would have started this list had I realized how many threads there are!
The puzzle has been under way for several years and a fantastic amount of information has been found by some wonderful RootsChatters who are still eagerly helping - it would certainly be great if, step by step, you could now go backwards proving (or disproving) each generation before proceeding back to the preceding generation ... Perhaps some fresh eyes might help - though I doubt it :D
Best of luck,
JAP

Hi Jap i'm sure Lesanne will appreciate your help
Happy new year
-
:D My goodness..Thank you so much for that list JAP :-*
I have not long long found it, as my email notification isn't working.
I shall go through them and see what was found.
Thanks again.
Lesanne.
-
Lesanne,
I wonder if you have seen this website:
http://www.worley.org.uk
Search for Cox..........
May be worth contacting to find out where the information came from and how much documentary proof there is. ;)
(Sorry this is not really related to this thread, but one of the umpteen others, but this is the "current" one so I'll add it here.
Found a Maidenhead directory today - can't remember the exact date, possibly 1930s? - there were three by the name of Frederick William Cox living in Maidenhead, let alone any of the others. )
Nell

>:( >:( He is one of those people who collects names............ even the fictitious ones I added to my tree just to find out if he checked the information............
Obviously he doesn't........... ;D

Added I'm reading through the threads JAP kindly listed.... Many have no replies, or 1 reply, some completed as I now know the wrong family(Wanstrow area). Etc.

fear not i have returned ;)
