Hi Pinetree
Is the 1841 census indexed?

Would I need an address to be able to find the other three children

Frances Marlow b 1813 married to James Harrison
William Marlow b 1816 married to a Rebecca?
James Marlow b 1818 married to a Maria?

I believe they are all in Twickenham but know nothing more....

Is this too time intensive for a free look-up?

Regards
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I don't think there is an index I'm afraid  :-[.  If you could get some possible addresses from 1851 I'd be happy to go back and check 1841 for those addresses.

All the best,

Pinetree

Hi Pinetree

thanks for the offer...here is what I know

Frances Marlow b 1813 married to James Harrison
they had their first child in 1837 and second in 1841 so imagine they would be together
1851 they are in King Street, Twickenham. James is a blacksmith/farrier with his own smithy

William Marlow b 1816 married to a Rebecca?
In 1851 they are in First Cross Road
1853 trade directory shows he had his business there as a bricklayer so he may not have moved far
First child born 1850 so may not be married in 1841....can't find the marriage at the moment

James Marlow b 1818 married to a Maria?
I think in 1851 census he was in Smiths Cottages, Chiswick
But I also have an 1851 address for him as 34 Windmill Place, Twickenham, Middlesex
He was married by 1851 but no children

If you come across any other Marlows in First, Second or Third Cross Road or nearby they are likely to be mine!

Many thanks for your help

Sarah

Sarah,

Found on Folio 7 p.6

James Marlow 20 Bricklayer
Elizabeth Marlow 20

Both born in county.

Couldn't make out the name of the of the Road - Hana Road, Hava Road - neither seems very likely  ???  On closer inspection I think it is an abbreviation for Hanworth Road.

Could this be your James - do you think he may have been married twice?

thanks for the info....much appreciated

I wonder if that is my James but with a first wife? I thought James was a wheelwright ...I had this great theory he learned his trade from his brother-in-law the blacksmith! but maybe he was a bricklayer first like his father

The Harrisons - just to clarify...are there two people called Fanny living in the house of similar age - one aged 28 and one aged 30 or is the 30 year old in fact the 3 year old daughter to the 28 year old mother?

Hana? Hava? wonder if there was a Ham Road....Ham is just over the river isn't it?....hmmm my map of Twickenham doesn't shed any light

thank you for all your help

Sarah

Sarah,

The Harrisons definitely appear in that order with those ages.

One thing I have noticed is someone appears to gone over the adult ages to round them down to the nearest 5 or 10.  The first Fanny's age reads as 28 but the 8 has been written over with a 5.  The 0 of the 30 of the second Fanny looks as if it might have been witten over a 4.  I wonder if she was a child and her age was given as 4, amended to 3 and when the rounding was done misread as 34 and rounded to 30.  A bit convoluted I know but if that fits better with the members of the family you know of it may be the answer.

Frances Marshall was a lady by the way - her age looks as if it may have been written as 27 originally.

From the previous pages I'm pretty sure Hana Road is an abbreviation for Hanworth Road.

Phew - I hope that all makes sense  :o  Much as we love the info we can get from the census - 1841 could definitely be more user friendly.

All the best,

Pinetree

Phew indeed! Thank you! At least we can see some of the workings.....when the electronic 2001 census is eventually released to future generations they'll never know how mnay times the input data was changed!

I'll sit and try and unravel the information. My great uncle started 'doing tree' before he died and I am left with his notes. I was trying to ascertain their accuracy before building on them too much.
His tree shows three children for the Harrisons - Fanny born Feb 1837, James born Oct 1839, and William born Sep 1841 (ie three months after teh census), but you found William already aged 1 in the census so I need to to do some more digging around! As I ever I find that one piece of information poses more questions than it answers :-)

Thank you for your help so far....

Sarah
