Title: Has anyone found family links to Tanfield?
Post by: Nick Carver on Thursday 30 September 04 19:18 BST (UK)
Have just uncovered several generations of Andersons in the family who hail from the village of Tanfield. I'd be very interested to find out if anyone else has a research link with that village as judging from the proliferation of offspring in the various families of Andersons, the chances of an overlap are quite high.

On another tack, I believe Tanfield 1750 onwards was a pit village, which accounts for the occupations my Andersons have given in the census. Does anyone know what it is like today?

Hello,

I have just found your post about relatives in Tanfield.  I recently unearthed a whole load of relations there called Richardson.  The father of the clan is Thomas Richardson who I think was born in 1754 and married a Jane Smiles, also from Tanfield.  They then produced a large brood of at least 8 children.  If you or anyone has any details that would help to trace them further back or just to shed further light on their lives I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks,

Pat

Hi Pat,

I've checked the Baptism records for 1748 to 1757 and there are plenty of RICHARDSON families listed.

So far I have not located a Thomas.
I'm a bit pushed for time at the moment but over the next few days I'll go through the full record for you and get back to you.

Cheers
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Thank you for your reply and kind offer.  I don't know if it helps but the records I have seen at LDS say 'Fryerside, Tanfield'.  I do hope that you find something, the children that I have are:
Jane; Margaret; Francis; John; Robert; Smiles; William and Thomas all born in the 1780s and 1790s.

Thanks again,

Pat

Hi Pat,

Here's what I have so far.

Benjamin RICHARDSON married Isabel SOUTHEREN 20th Sept 1747, both of this chapelry.

The SOUTHEREN name appears to be one that could also be Solteren/Solteron/Southeron. according to the transcriptions.

Neither of these people appear in the Baptism listings which  start in 1719, they were either born before then or came from some other place.

Benjamin & Isabel had the following children.residence listed as, of Leap.
Rowland, bap 29th Jan 1748
Thomas, bap 25th Aug 1751
Alice, bap 14th Apr 1754

Thomas RICHARDSON married Elizabeth MORTON by banns, both of this Chapelry, service performed by T THWAITES curate.
Witnesses were John BLAXTON & George LECK.

Elizabeth MORTON d/o Wm MORTON of Tanfield Head was baptised 23rd July 1758.

There are two locations given for residences of the children you have listed. At this stage I'm not really sure if they all belong to your Thomas & Elizabeth

Children of Thomas
Thomas bapt 21st July 1782 s/o Thomas of Fryerside, possible death in 1783.
John bapt 16th May 1784 s/o Thomas of Tantove
George bapt 15th Apr 1787 s/o Thomas of Tantove
William bapt 10th Feb 1788 s/o Thomas of Fryerside
Thomas bapt 4th Jan 1790  s/o Thomas of Tantove
Jane bapt 10th June 1790  d/o Thomas of High Fryerside
Robert bapt 11th Jan 1795 s/o Thomas of Middle Fryerside
Smailes bapt 5th Feb 1797  s/o Thomas of Middle Fryerside

I'm still looking for Margaret & Francis

There was another THOMAS RICHARDSON bapt 28th June 1747. He was the son of John RICHARDSON.
If he married and had children then the TANTOVE children listed could be his & not your Thomas's.

OR, he might be your THOMAS????
You have to love Genealogy Eh!

If I find anything else then I will post it for you.

Cheers
Geoff

Thank you, Geoff!

That is an amazing amount of material for me to digest - I can't believe you have found it all so quickly.  We were fairly certain about Thomas marrying Jane Smiles, though, as the Smiles name was passed on through the generations at least to my g grandfather who rejoiced in the name of Frederick Edward Henry Smiles Richardson.  Is there no trace of Jane?

Thanks again

I have an Isobel Richardson in my tree (born c 1750) daughter of Matthew. She married a Wigham whose daughter married an Anderson and that is where my Tanfield connection starts in the 1770s. I haven't done any research up to now on Isobel, Matthew and their forebears, but thought I would mention this in case there is a link. Geoff and I have decided we have a link through a marriage between one of his Fenwicks and one of my Andersons, so it would be nice to find more links. It's wonderful to see so much interest generated in a little place like Tanfield.

Offspring married into the Hindhaughs and their offspring into the Armstrong x 2, Heron and a couple of others who looked as though they wandered in from Mackem Country.

Hi Pat,

I finally got around to looking for your Jane SMILES.

Sorry to say there is not a SMILES entry on the Tanfield transcriptions at all between 1747-1770.
I also checked on the Lanchester transcriptions but still no luck.
The IGI has a Jane SMILES born in 1766 at Ryton but I think she maybe too young for your Jane.

I notice you said a while back that you wondered what the place was like now. If you follow Audrey's advice and look at 'tanfield-railway.co.uk' there are a couple of pics buried there, taken right at the Tanfield end of the existing preserved line. The background of them might give you an idea.
(Or ask 'Tommy', the site supervisor, if he has any local contacts working on the line.....  You might get a few extra pics if you ask him nicely! - but don't tell him I said so!)

You haven't noticed any Hunter Forster links have you. I have a Thomas Forster born Tanfield but when I checked there were a number of possibilities. However it would seem that Thomas and Michael moved fromTanfield to Ovingham about the same time and both married in Ovingham and there a number of connections through marriages of their children and grandchildren.

Hi Geoff

Sorry I havent been in touch sooner, not been very well.

There is loads of Harrisons far too many to be honest, but there is one particular Harrison Im looking for, and that is the death of Anthony Harrison (my ggrandfather) b1851/1852 in Tanfield, Durham.  I know he was still alive in 1901.  his wife was Mary and they lived in 1901 at 1 oakeys cottages as did most of the Harrisons.  that is all the information I have on Anthony.

Tanya, sent me a site on Ancestory of the index to look through so hopefully I should find him on that, but the past few days just havent felt up to it.

Please dont put yourself out for me, as I dont like really asking people to look for things as I think that is part of the fun.

Best Wishes

Yvonne

Hi there

I have ancestors that lived and were born in Tanfield.  The two families of mine from this area are called WATSON and RICHARDSON. From the Information  I have my Ricardsons were from Chester  le Street, and settled and died in Tanfield.  The Watsons were actually born there. Been reading the other replies and the Richardsons could be linked to  my family.  I have just started looking into the Richardson  family as I have come to a standstill with some of my other family names.  Once I have had a look at the information I have got, then may be able to find a link, My Great x5 Grandmother was Hannah Richardson and she married Joseph Watson.  Hannahs parents were Thomas Richardson and Ann Henderson.

I have a confession to make. Since starting the thread, I have found that the research that identified a Tanfield family in my tree was flawed and unless the original link belongs to a cousin  or my rellie (not impossible given the relative rarity of the name involved) I have no links with Tanfield. I hope others have found it useful nonetheless.

There were Renton's in Ford, NBL .  Here is one baptism--maybe it is yours I don't know but gives you some names to work with:  John Renton bapt 1 Dec 1812 son of William, Smith, Ford Forge, by his wife Margaret.

And a burial that helps define those parents:  William Renton died 22 Dec , buried 24 Dec 1812. of Ford Forge, son of William Renton, blacksmith by his wife Margaret late Greerfield (I think-the first letter was struck over). aged ? (didn't come out)

There was a Jane Elizabeth WILSON born at Sheep Hill on 27-Jun-1858 and baptised at Tanfield Parish Church on 25-Jul-1858. She was the daughter of George William, an Excise Officer, and Mary WILSON.

A further child of the same parents, Anna Marie WILSON, was born at Sheep Hill on 23-Dec-1859 and baptised at Tanfield Parish Church on 26-Feb-1860.

That sounds like my Jane! Sheep Hill? I've never heard of it! According to FreeBMD, there were 3 Jane Wilsons that might be correct. But because according to one if not more of the census she was born in Tanfield I ruled out South Shields and Auckland because Tanfield wasn't in those Districts ( and the 3rd Jane had a middle name of Ann). I therefore assumed she was born in Sept because there are 2 entries for Durham and that includes Tanfield. I'll have to look up which district Sheep Hill comes under now! Many thanks though. Can I ask where you got those details from?

The information I gave on the WILSONS came from Tanfield Parish Registers.

Tanfield is an ancient parish well over 1,000 years old.

Burnopfield is an ancient village lying about one mile north of Tanfield village.  It fell within Tanfield Parish until 1873 when it became a parish in its own right.

Sheep Hill lies within the village of Burnopfield.

There are quite a few references in the Parish Registers.

What exactly do you want to know i.e. time period etc?

MOSLIN/MOSLING, OLIVER etc.

There are quite a few references in the Parish Registers.
What exactly do you want to know i.e. time period etc?

I am mainly looking for the origins of Elizabeth MOSLIN who married William OLIVER in 1816 at Tanfield.    She was probably the child of another Elizabeth MOSLIN baptised in Tanfield on 27 March 1791 but no father is mentioned in Family Search.

William and Elizabeth Oliver pop up in Gateshead with the birth of a son William born 3 December 1819, baptised 16 January 1820 where William is described as a Waggonman.  We then find the baptism of dtr. Elizabeth - my great great grandmother on 10 June 1827 at Chartershaugh and William is still a Waggonman.    Next a son John was baptised 23 May 1830 at Harraton and William still a Waggonman.     I haven't found them in the 1841 census though Family Search mentions their names and birthdates in Bishopwearmouth and South Shields.    In 1851 mother Elizabeth aged 64 is at 8 Hopper Street Bishopwearmouth with her dtr Elizabeth aged 24 but now surnamed Fullwood.    In that same census of 1841 Richard and Margaret Oliver are next door at No.7 Hopper Street.   These are two different Oliver families but Margaret Oliver and Emmanuel Fullwood both died and then Richard widower married Elizabeth widow, so an Oliver married an Oliver.
I am focussing on Elizabeth Moslin now because she is in my maternal line and my mitochondrial dna has been tested and found to be T2b.
Title: Re: Has anyone found family links to Tanfield?

My research has just led me to a family named HANDCOCK of Tanfield. George Handcock married Mary MOORE in the Chapelry of Tanfield on 19 May 1806. Baptism records show that they had 4 children baptised in St Margaret of Antioch - Ann (1806-1807), Ann 1808, George 1813 and Sarah 1816.
Census records indicate that George (snr) was born abt 1762 but I am unable to find any birth details for him in Durham.  I believe that HANCOCKS had ownership of land at High Friarside from the mid 1600's to the mid 1700's.  Can anyone help with further details of George b1762 please?
My husband is a direct ancestor of Sarah Handcock (youngest child) who married James Ridley in 1847 and then immigrated to Australia abt 1848/9.  I have no early details on James RIDLEY b about 1821 either if anyone knows anything about the Ridleys in this region at the time.
