Hi Maureen- don't know if this helps or just throws a spanner in the works!!
1851 census living at Whitecrook, old Luce , Wigtownshire
John McDowall- head-age 26- ag. lab- born stoneykirk
Martha McDowall- wife- 19- stoneykirk
John McDowall-son-2 Inch
Catherine- daur-2 weeks- Inch
It would mean Martha was born in 1832 ish & John 1825 ish.

Hello Woodydog
Thanks very much for the information.
I know you have to take the ages with a pinch of salt but I think it is the family
I'm looking for. John and Martha were my gr/gr/grandparents. John was still a ag lab when his daughter Elizabeth was married in 1877, she wasn't born until 1859.
She married a French man Phillipe Maurer who was living in the area and working on the local railways.
I don't know much about the Wigtown area, I know after they married they lived at Markdow, New Luce before moving to Ayr.
Is old Luce/New Luce near to each other.

Hi,
John McDowall is listed as an ag. lab 20 at Culgroat, Stoneykirk on the 1841 census, there are a lot of McDowall's listed, will try to see if I can find if any were his parents.
Also listed is Martha Morrison, 10 with her parents and siblings, I can give you both lists if you want them, also her brother Abraham and Susan Morrison, who later got married, there is a death entry on the 1855 list for there son James.
Let me know if you want the info.
Regards

Hi Maureen,
I don't know if this will make things more confusing but I had another look at my census book for Stoneykirk and there is another John McDowall at Kildonnan 15 ag lab, I checked the IGI and there is a full list of siblings, his parents were on the 1841 census living at Cairngarroch
Archibald McDowall 40 hand loom weaver Ireland
Katherine " 36 Wig
Ann " 11 "
Matthew " 7 "
James " 4 "
William " 2 "
John's date of birth is 11 July 1824 and lists his father as Archibald and mother Catherine McColm or McCallum, I think it is more likely McColm as there are lots in the area at that time.

Hello Beannie
Many thanks again, all information is gratefully received.
I have John McDowall as being born about 1822,I know you have to be flexable with the dates.
It doesn't make it any easier that they are both Ag Lab, I do know that was his profession.
I will have a look on the IGI

Hi Maureen
Just read this thread. I think Beannie very likely had the correct parents.
You may have done so in the intervening years, but if you find John McDOWALL's death registration, it should name his parents - assuming that the informant knew.
I see 2 possibilities on the Scotlandspeople index, one in Stranraer 1901, and one in Stoneykirk 1906.
I may be able to help you further, but will await your advice re how much more you have found since your last posting.

Hello Bruce,
Can't believe it's ten years since I posted that query!
I have found out quite a bit on John and Martha since then, his parents were the Archibald and Catherine (nee McColm) mentioned.
You say you might be able to help me further, are they in your family tree as well?

Hi Maureen,
I'm not connected as far as I'm aware, but I am a McDOWALL with Wigtownshire roots, and I have researched Wigtownshire extensively. I often explore other McDOWALL lines, partly in the hope of connecting, but more because I enjoy the process.
This was the first thread I have responded to on this forum, but if you check the archives of the Wigtownshire Mailing List on Rootsweb at http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/SCT/SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE.html you will see many of my postings. (If you are inclined to deduce my address, it changed in 2010.)
I do have some further information on your McDOWALL family, but have to wonder if any of it would be new to you.

Maureen,
Thought I should clarify that I'm more than happy to share what info' I have, but I want to avoid using this forum to post lots of details which you may already have.
If you want to contact me privately, I'm ok with that, but if you don't wish to, I'll respect that also.
Bruce
