Can anyone help with finding confirmation of my Grandfather's parents.
I have been told his father was William Doherty and Mother Catherine McLaughlin but have been unable to confirm this. Was also told William was a publican in Captain Street, Coleraine.
What I do know:
Grandfather was James Joseph O'Doherty (he added the O) born 1884/5. I have been told he had siblings Agnes, Mary, John. There may have ben others.
He married first wife Annie Mulhern pre 1921.
Children: John Joseph (my Dad)born 1921 Strabane; Mary Agnes; Sheila and Grania.
Annie died giving birth to Grania and I was told she is buried in Killowen Cemetery Coleraine.
Grandfather married Martha Anderson.
Children: Kathleen; Frank and Meta.
Grandfather died 5/5/1973 age 89 in Portstewart. He was Buried in Agherton Cemetery. Martha also buried with him.
I Know all their children apart from Meta have passed away. Meta went off to America in the 1950's and we have no knowledge of her whereabouts now or if she is still alive. She would be in her late 60's early 70's.
It seems very difficult to get any info online re Irish roots. Any help or advice on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading if you manage to get to the end of this rather long post.

Hello Jackie,
I'd tend to post a few emails to Librarians in the towns you've mentioned ... Coleraine, Portstewart and Strabane. They may be able to get a little piece of information for you. The two boards where the relevent libraries are located are the North Eastern Education and Library Board (http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/directory/LibraryBoardResults.asp?Board=NEELB) and the Western Education and Library Board. (http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/directory/LibraryBoardResults.asp?Board=WELB) If there is a member in any of the towns they might like to find where the old papers are kept and see if they can find anything on your behalf.
All the Best, Chris

Your grandfather's parents William Doherty and Jane McLaughlin were married in 1875 in co Derry
your grandfather and Annie Mulhern were married in 1921 in co Derry
I can explain how William became a publican. Grace McLaughlin's husband Edward McLaughlin was a publican who died 10 August 1893. He left his estate to his wife Grace. Upon her death on 7 March 1904 she left her estate to William Doherty which is how he went from being a farmer to a spirit merchant.
children of marriage of William & Jane:
Mary born 7 August 1877 Drumachose,co Derry
John born 29 June 1879 Drumachose,co Derry
Margaret Bridget born 1881 co Derry
James Joseph born 1884 co Derry
Edward born 1886 co Derry
Catherine born 1887 co Derry
Jane born 1889 co Derry
Grace(Margaret) born 1892 co Derry
Agnes born 1894 co Derry
George born 1896 co Derry
I found a birth I believe to be Annie's. It is Annie Huey Mulhern born April-June 1893.
If you wish to see the full childrens' births,Annie & James' marriage or the marriage of William & Jane all are on the rootsireland.ie website. You have to buy credits (as it is pay per view) if you wish to see entire cert or you can order the certs online from GRONI for 4 euro each which may be a good idea as the names of William & Jane's and Annie Mulherns' parents may be on them, which will bring you another generation back.Hope this helps,Kim
