Hi does anyone visit the records dept. at Kew? I have the photocopy of my great grandfathers enlistment papers but cannot read the regiment that his brother (who was next of kin) was serving in. I am trying to find out what happened to his brother but there are a few soldiers with the same name so I am not sure which may be him. My great grandfather was Daniel Sloan, who enlisted in 1915 and was killed in Ypres in 1917. His brother was John Joseph Sloan. Many thanks Cass

Cass
it may be best to scan and post the copy you have
do you know where john joseph enlisted, born, resided??
-
and where they the same as daniel?

John Joseph Sloan was born in Cumbria but in 1901 was in Houghton-le-spring. I don't know where he enlisted but my great grandfather was also born in Cumbria but enlisted in ?Middlesex. I will try to scan papers but my IT skills are not 100% Cass

Yes that is my Daniel Sloan but I don't think that is my John Sloan. I have found that one before and wrote to the Border Reg. who said that the soldiers no. indicated that he had joined after 1915 (but my John was in the services when Daniel Sloan enlisted in 1915. Cass

hmmm ok.. (damn thought i'd got him!) but of course he may not have been a casualty
do the scan, save it as a jpg ( not above 300 kb) click additional options, attach, and find the scan where you saved it on your pc

chris/cass,the border regt said he joined them in 1915,he may have served in another regt before this or he could have been a time served soldier who re=enlisted and joined the border regt so the man that you found could be john, mack

Tried to post scanned papers but too big. Not enough IT skills yet to reduce it but will keep trying. If I could find that John Sloans enlistments papers it would confirm if it was him. I have tried the national archives website but can never find what I need ( I paid a researcher to find Daniels Sloans papers) Cass

I have also found another John Sloan who was shot at dawn in July 1916. He was aprivate in the 1/4th bt Royal Lancaster Regiment. I got his court martial papers but they do not have any personal details on so again I do not know if it is him. I tried finding his enlistment papers on the archives site but did not know where to start as it all appears to be numbers!!!! Cass

send the scan to me, make it the best quality you can and i'll post it

Many thanks for everyones help. The reason it was changed is that Daniel married after enlisting and his wife's details were put in. Unfortunately he died 3/12 later. I'll just have to keep looking. Cheers. Cass

Hi
I have Bodden/Bowden ancestors from Down who left in 1846-7 for Cockermouth, they married McAlinens and Sloans. The three familes all seem to have come from South Down (the Loughinisland area), just across the St Georges Channel. The families I am connected with were all Catholics
