abt 1818 Surrey married Jane Shiells 1845 son Robert James Nichol b 1849.
Any assistance, links or others researching would be very much appreciated as I am not having any luck with my family line.

Tess, where in Surrey is this all taking place? With this information we might be able to find them on the 1851 + census :) Surrey is a big county!

Sorry the info Surrey and 1818 was all I had from the records in Australia so far. Unfortunately Adam died 10 days before arrival of smallpox and was buried at sea and the ship was quarantined upon arrival. The ship was the Taymouth Castle. His wife and son travelled with him and she was expecting another child who was born here and named Adam Nichol.. His wife was Jane Shiells whom ?born Leith.I dont know if spelling is correct however and she remarried a few years later.
A family member has told me that he was my greatgrandfathers brother and because I am having some problems finding info re his parents I thought it may be another way to find some clues.

Forgot to advise that Robert James may have been born in Sunbury 1849 but not confirmed.
-
Tess,
Can you tell me when they landed in Oz.
Can't find anyone in 1851 but plan to dig a little deeper this afternoon.
The name NICHOL seems to have connections with northern England & Scotland.
I've looked on the IGI family search for birth & marriage of Adam but nothing. Found a birth registration for a Robert James Nichol September quarter 1849 on FreeBMD but wouldn't you know it, the registration district is unreadable by the transcriber & me so don't even know which county it's in.

Tess,
On the family search IGI there is,
birth of Robert James Nichol 3/7/1849, Sunbury Surrey son of Adam & Jane Nichol.
Robert married Annie Williams 1878, South Australia & died 1924.
All information is member submitted so should be treated with caution. For instance, Staines is in Middlesex not Surrey!
I found information on the Taymouth Castle, sailed 7/2/1854 from Plymouth, Devon arrived Adelaide 3/5/1854. Is that the right one?
Looked for their marriage & only found in December quarter 1845 an Adam NICHOLL at Stockport (Cheshire) 19 311. Looked for a corresponding entry for Jane SHIELLS for the same quarter & year but couldn't find her...very strange ???
Still can't find any of the family members in the 1851 census...again very strange. What about details of your great grandfather, Adam's brother, that might help!

Hi Tess and Jane,
If Jane Shiells was born in Leith, then you need to look north of the border for her.

Thankyou for your assistance. I don't have detail forJames Nichols parentage other than his mother was Mary born Lanton abt 1770 Details of where he was born are conflicting on census Downham NBL and on records here Haddington but he was living and employed in Haddington before emigrating so Northumberland seems more appropriate.
I was trying to follow Adams line for clues.I found James Nichol and his family in Yester East Lothian in 1851.
They emigrated in 1854 to Australia all information is correct.
In 1841 they appear to have been in Cavers Roxburghshire but again there are 2 families in census same names etc..There is a fair gap in age between Adam and James but some family connection is definitely there as there is evidence in Australia.I did realise that Sunbury is Middlesex but some other family lines are there so Robert James being born there doesn't seem unusual

Hi Tess,
As Lanton & Haddington are in Scotland (couldn't find Downham, only one in Lewisham, Kent) I would turn your attentions there.
Why Adam & Jane were in Sunbury m/sex in 1849 seems odd...such a long way from home or how come Adam was born in Surrey ???
Best bet would be to try & find Adam, Jane & young Robert in the Scottish 1851 census.
Did I read correctly that both Adam & James emmigrated on the same ship? I was thinking what a tragic story that Jane was widowed & left with a five year old & another on the way when she set foot in Oz for the first time. If she had her brother-in-law with her it must have helped a lot!

Hi :)
James Nichol with his wife and family were on another ship the John Bunyon. He lost a daughter either on the voyage or soon after.
Yes it was very sad for Jane to have lost her husband 10 days before arrival and have a young child and a baby on the way.All this to bear and a new and unknown country and future.
The families seem to have settled in the same area so she would have had some support at least.
I believe Downham is in Lancashire please correct me if I am incorrect.
Adam and James were both gamekeepers by occupation.
I have just found a record of the marriage of Adam and Jane on Scotlands people
and now have my avenue to obtain certificate and confirmation of parentage.
The information on the Lds site is correct. Thankyou so much for your trouble

You're welcome, Tess & good luck with the family research :)
