I am trying to trace relatives that emigrated to Winnipeg in Canada from Poland around about 1900. My mother-in law's grandfather Peter Frej left poland with his youngest daughter Helena leaving behind his sons who were all settled. We know his daughter got married and her married name would have been Ostrowska. My mother in law is called Genowfer and is very elderly and her dearest wish is to find out what happended to relatives.
Can anyone help!!

Can find no local listings for Frej, and none for Ostrowska...
http://findaperson.canada411.ca/
On that site, there are some in vancouver, Ontario & Quebec...
We have the surname Ostrowski in Winnipeg, so if you think this may be
a relative,
Hey I just found it on the BMD!!! Note has "i" ending
PETER "Ostrowski" married Helena Frej...1913
KAZIMIERZ JOHN Hotobowich married Maria Frej..1919

Hi JJ
What wonderful news thank you very much. I went on the find a person in Canada site and found that there are 13 Ostrowski's living in Winnipeg. Hopefully I may be able to find one of them who is directly related to Helena.
Do you know if Winnipeg would have a site that I can post a message, some think like a newsletter for the town?
Thanks again

http://www.weeklies.ca/times/
this is a weekly in Winnipeg...each area has it's own community paper, but they are all run by Transcontinental Inc.. Maybe they will be kind and run it in all of it's little papers...that would be awesome as your family name is spread throughout the city, it seems. Write something great for them...lrt them know it's an elderly person who needs to find them...heartstring stuff and all that...
I used to offer to phone for people, but even though I was polite I was sometimes met with some harshness....so i retired from that! haha
Could you make your little message icon into a smilie face, now??? J.J.

Have you tired the website for Hamburg immigration?
There are listed 191 person's with the surname "Ostrowska" some migrating to USA others to Canada.
The list is only from 1903, but could be other family members joining the first group. (A on going project)

Good luck

Hi lancalot,
I just checked out the Odessa files and several more finds with the surname Ostrowska. These are the links. No Frej surname but there is Frei.
If these links don't work go to http://www.odessa3.org/collections.html
Start at full text search
then type in the surname on the Inspecting the Odessa Lexicon, the four links show up to click on.

I also found two Ostrowska living in Vienna. The link to this is

I am also searching for family who came from these area's.
Good Luck again

I have found an obituary for Helena Ostrowski who passed away in 1962 at the age of 70 having come from Poland around 1907. Her husband was still alive at this time along with 2 sons and 2 daughters. One son was in Vancouver and the rest remained in Winnipeg. If you PM me your email address I can send you the obituary. In the meantime, I will see if I can find any others who remained in Winnipeg.

Hi, Kooran, I actually search out unanswered or unfinished Manitoba ones in order to complete them when I only have a few lookups, to make it worth my while. What I have done is called bookmarking the page...So please feel free to do so yourself..... I won't bother doing these anymore...

Sorry, wasn't paying very good attention...again. I am researching my father's Polish family so I just jumped right in when I saw the "Polish Family" heading. I'll take care to check dates and read postings more closely.
