Title: A day in the Shropshire Archives - Look ups done 3rd March
Post by: Lloydy on Tuesday 21 February 06 22:02 GMT (UK)
On Friday I am going to the Shropshire Archives to do some family research, and while I am there I will be willing to do some look ups for any Rootschatters.

Obviously, I will do the look ups on a "first come, first served" basis, so please let me have as much detail as possible.  Could I please ask that you keep your requests to one per person to make it fair.

I hope I will be able to help you :)

Hi Jan

Sorry this is a bit vague. I've (finally) traced my Gx5 Grandfather's birth to parents William & Hannah Lloyd in Montford Bridge - bap. 2 Dec 1798. Known siblings 2 brothers John born 1794 & William 1796.

I had great trouble finding Richard on the Census and finally tracked him down living in Birmingham on the 1841 & 51 Census.

I'm trying to find his parents on the 1841 census (a long shot) but I'm not  sure if he moved to Birmingham with his parents and siblings or just with his own family, leaving his parents and siblings in Montford.

I have a suspicion that his parents may have died between 1812 & 1841 and so to help narrow the search down, if a burial register exists for Montford Bridge between 1812 & 1841 is it possible to look for a burial of a William & a Hannah Lloyd?

They were married in 1791 so I suspect they were born c1770 - probably born in Montford area.

If there's not too many, any other information on other Lloyd burials recorded in Montford Bridge would also be appreciated.

Hope you don't mind - if any of this doesn't make sense feel free to drop me a PM :)

According to the Shropshire Archives holdings lists there isn't a burial register for Montford for the period you are asking.

I will mention it anyway when I go, just in case.

Ah Montford is Litchfield Diocese - curious that they don't hold those records considering Montford is on Shrewsbury's doorstep!

If you could ask just in case that would be much appreciated.  :)

Hi Jan, have just seen your very kind offer and was please wondering if you could help me out at all. I have just discovered my Shropshire ancestry and have found I have Green's from Market Drayton in my familytree, this is what I have managed to find out so far on the IGI. Sarah Green baptised 21 April 1765 father Richard Green (my direct ancestor) and also Mary Green baptised 22 August 1755 and John Green baptised 3rd June 1761, both father Richard Green and all baptised in Market Drayton. Would be very happy if you could lookup these baptism entries and any others for the same parents and also possible parent's marriage, anything for me to go on really.

Very grateful for any help you can give me.

Sorry I have not got back to you sooner. Sorry about not putting the marriage place down.

According to the free bmd site the district is Shrewsbury. So it could be St. Chad or St. Mary.

This are a bit upside down here right now. as My husband went in hospital to have a kidney stone removed and ended up having his kidney removed!! The good news is that he is going along and he will be home on Sunday.

Cheers.

Telford is a little vague for a look up as there are a number of parishes in the area - examples include Dawley, Madeley, Lawley, etc etc  I had a quick look through Lawley Bank but as I only had a very vague year, I didn't have enough time to go through several years and parishes.

If you could find out some more definite information about this marriage then I would be more than happy to look again for you.

Sorry I couldn't find anything today.

a William Owen was listed as a cabinet maker in Wem High Street,in 1828.
a Wm. Owen was also a parish clerk.

as Loppington is only 3 or 4 miles from Wem it might be worth looking into.

Hello,
Looking for a Shropshire marriage of Maria Millichamp
between 1851 & 1861.
In 1851 she lived in the Bitterley area.
Thanks,
Hinton

This was difficult to look up because of the lack of parish.  For a 10 year span there is a large amount of fiche to look through.

I have had a look on FreeBMD and there are several Millichamp's marrying in Shropshire, several in the Ludlow district.

Do have any other information?  The name of the groom?

Hi Jan,

Thank you so much for looking up my Evan and Rebecca Pryce's marriage in Alberbury.  I have a small query, though.  Was Rebecca's name DAVIES or DAVIS? Do you remember? Since one of the witnesses was john Davis, I wondered if he was a relative or not. Too bad they don't give any info on the parents, isn't it?

Could I possibly ask for another look-up the next time you go?  Rebecca Davis / Davies was born in Criggion (near Alberbury) about 1805 (she died in Nov 1887 at age 82).  I thought she might have been christened in Alberbury, but I've checked the IGI and there's nothing on her birth there.  So if there are any parish records for a church in Criggion, would you be able to check for me when you have the time?

I really appreciate your help - thanks again!

Hi Arkay

Rebecca was definitely DAVIES, and the witness John was DAVIS.

Remember that neither of them could read or write so Rebecca wouldn't have been able to check the spelling!!   It's only what the Vicar has written.

I have added your second query to my list for my next visit.

NIGELG

There was burials for Montford afterall!! Sorry for the confusion.

Unfortunately, I could't find William or Hannah but there are a large number of films to look through and I didn't have time to check every single one.

I did start to look for other Lloyd burials in Montford and I was surprised to find loads.  Too many for me to take details and type here!!!!!!

If you can find out some more information - perhaps narrow down the burial years - I would be more than happy to check again for you.

After using a Reader for a few hours the eyesight starts failing ;D

I'll have to do some more digging around and if I find out anything to narrow the dates down, I'll let you know, however, I am beginning to suspect they may have moved to Brum!

Great fun this eh!?

Thanks - you are a star! ;D

Arkay

Hiya Arkay

I have checked the parish registers and, firstly, can tell you that there are no parish registers for Criggion.  Therefore, I checked Alberbury for baptisms from 1800 to 1810 but couldn't find any record for Rebecca Davis.

Sorry :'(

I'm not sure if you have anymore room for another lookup but I'd be eternally grateful if you could squeeze another request in. It's a settlement examination for William Hodgkiss of Stapleton dated 5 November 1779.The reference number is P268/L/8/20 which you give the archivist and with which they may take a while to find. I hope this is not too much for you to fit into your busy day and thank you kindly for your helpful nature

Best Wishes.
Steffy.

Hi Steffy

I was very lucky enough to be able to view the ORIGINAL settlement examination WOW!!!!  and this is what it said:

County of Salop

Examination of William Hodgkiss now resident in the parish of Church Stretton, county aforsd, Coalman who upon both faith, that he was born in the parish of Madeley in the sd County that he hath generally worked in the parish of Madeley aforesaid as a Coalman, that he never did any act or deed whereby to gain a settlement elsewhere that he is now of the age of twenty three years, a batchelor

At Frodesley taken, sworn to before me this fifteenth day of November 1779, Thos Edwards.

(Signed by W Hodgkiss in his own hand) Will Hodgkiss

Hi Jan,

That is disappointing, but thanks very much for checking, anyway.  However, my Rebecca was DAVIES, not Davis.  Did you search under both surnames by any chance?  If not, perhaps she might still be found on a future visit to the archives!

Forgive my persistence, but that's the name of this game, isn't it?

Cheers!

Hi Arkay

I searched by looking for the first name Rebecca, and there wasn't any ???

Are there any other registers you would like me to check?

Not at the moment, thanks, Jan.  Rebecca was born in Criggion, so I think Alberbury would be the closest place to check.

I read your post in the Common Room about your visit there.  Glad you had fun - I'm so envious!!

Hi Arkay

I had another look through the Alberbury baptisms today, and even checked the films for 1791 - 1795 and 1796 - 1800, as well as the original 1800 through to 1812, and I still can't see her.  In fact, the name Rebecca doesn't appear at all ???

Have you got any more ideas? :)

Hi Jan,

I really appreciate your spending so much time looking for my gg-grandmother Rebecca Davies.  Too bad she refuses to be found!

I haven't got a clue where to look now.  Her son John Pryce, my g-grandfather, was married in Welshpool Independent Chapel, so perhaps there was an independent church in the Criggion area where she was baptized.  I don't know where their records would be held, though.

She and Evan Pryce were married in 1827 in Alberbury parish church, but lived in Welshpool from 1828 on.  She says she was born in Criggion, Salop on all the censuses except 1841, which just says born in county.  Her 1887 death cert shows her age as 82.

Three of their children say they were also born in Criggion:  Emma (1832), Elizabeth (1834) and Harriet (1838).  The four others say Welshpool:  William (1828), Eliza (1830), John (1835) and Philip (1844).

Anyway, many thanks once again.  I hope she'll turn up eventually.

Arkay

Hello again :)

I've been doing a bit of Googling and found the following:

http://www.cpat.demon.co.uk/projects/longer/churches/montgom/16677.htm
Church of St Michaels and All Angels, Criggion

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MGY/Crugion/index.html
Information about Criggion.

I have just checked the Alberbury list of microfilms held at the Shropshire Archives (just in case I missed any!! ), and I see that there is a "printed" set of general baptisms, marriages and deaths from 1564 - 1812.  I will have a look at this next time I go.

Dear Jan,

If you are still a visitor to Shropshire Archives, I wonder if you would investigate a JANE HAYWARD (HAYWOOD) at Montford Cemetery during 1814-1819.

In 1819, at "Montford Hill", were living her sister and her father, who were looking after her child John WOOD (born 24 Nov 1814).

My gratitude in advance,

Regards, Benjy :)

Hello,
Looking for a Shropshire marriage of Maria Millichamp
between 1851 & 1861.
In 1851 she lived in the Bitterley area.
Thanks,
Hinton

Hi Hinton, your Maria may have gone to New Zealand unmarried, arrived 1858, with her mother Eliza Bray (nee Ick) who remarried to Benjamin Bray after Maria's father Edward Millichamp died about 1838. Does this sound like your Maria? If so, how are you linked?
