Title: Denton & Alburgh
Post by: meles on Tuesday 21 February 06 15:49 GMT (UK)
I have taken a week off at the beginning of March to go to Norfolk and do some research on the ground of my ancestors (OK, I know, it's getting bad - spending my holidays looking up dead relatives...!)

I shall be looking up Brocks of Denton and Alburgh. While I am flicking through the parish records and pottering round church graveyards in those two villages, is there anything else I can take a note of, for others?

I do not intend to widen my search to other areas - sorry! - but would be very happy to look up other surnames in those two villages.

Responses by end of the month or you will be too late!

I hope I'm not too late to ask you to look at some entries in the Alburgh PRs next week; I've only just seen your message.  The entries I'm interested in are

Samuel Mobbs b 1767

Isaac Mobbs father of above

Elizabeth Brock who married Samuel above in 1811

John Brock b 1736

His Wife Elizabeth Wooltorton b about 1732

I don't know if these Brocks are the same famiy of Brocks you are researching.

Thank you for your offer,

Regards

Margaret

Hi Margaret

I will certainly do that. I strongly suspect that John Brock  b. 1736 is my ggggg grandfather. I hope to prove it... (fingers crossed!)

Samuel, too, is in my database.

I will get in touch when I return.

Hi Margaret

I did enjoy my trip. The people at Norfolk Records office are very friendly and helpful, and I got a lot done, largely due to their help, in the three mornings I was there.

Whilst I was poring over the Alburgh parish records I found Samuel Mobbs' baptism on 1 Feb. 1767, which confirms his birth as 1766/7.

I also found the marriage between Isaac Mobbs and Mary Bedwell on 18 Sept 1766.

And a baptsism of Frances, their daughter on 27 May 1770.
And of Sandra on 23 Feb 1812
And of Zachariah Mobbs on 17 May 1812.

Also a marriage between George Mobbs of Wortwell to Margaret Brock on 12 Sept 1758!

Hope that is helpful to you.

I may have some info on John Brock and Elizabeth Woolltorton, but I need to sift all the data I acquired first.

best wishes

Thanks for your reply and for your work on my behalf.

That seems to be the Isaac Mobbs I was looking for and to have details of his family too is a real bonus.

I hope I'm as lucky with the Brocks.

Thanks again,

Margaret

Hi Margaret

You were also looking for info on John Brock and Elizabeth Wooltorton. I found two references to their marriage in the Denton Parish Registers. They were married on 20th July 1757 in St Mary's, Denton (not in Alburgh, as LDS says). Both were single at the time. The name is spelled Woolltorton.

He was a carpenter and also became Parish Clerk in Michaelmas 1773 and died 24 June 1805.

She was buried on 6 Jan 1794 age 62 (so b. 1732)

I have the details of their nine children if you want them.

I think (but am not 100% certain) that his parents were John Brock and Susannah nee Meadows (married a Reeve and was widowed, then married a Nunn and was widowed again before finally marrying John).

I have details of literally dozens of Brocks in the village from this time. Cannot sort them all out - there are at least three different Johns! Also dozens of Woolltortons, but I did not record many of them, as I did not have the time. But I can send you  the handful I have, if you wish.

Thanks for the Brock/Wooltorton entries. I knew Susannah had married twice but not 3 times and I didn't know about the 9 children. Didn't do things by halves did they?

Details of the 3 John Brocks would be ueful too.

I had the same trouble with one line of my mother's family. It's an unusual name but in the early 19th century they were as common as Smith in Cornwall. I still haven't got them all sorted out.

Thanks again for your help.

The children were (dates are baptisms, not births):
Samuel 17.11.1758
Elizabeth 28.9.1760
John 1.5.1762
Tabitha 15.4.1764
Robert 9.2.1766
Jeremiah 26.6.1768 (and buried on 15.1.1769, poor soul)
Jeremiah 18.10.1769
Sarah 17.5.1772
Susannah 17.5.1772

The other John Brocks:
John Brock m. to Elizabeth nee Reeve, then Nunn, then widowed. Had a daugher Mary, b. 25.5.1798

John Brock, widower m. Susan Morrell, widow, 29.9.1794 (surely not your John marrying 6 months after Elizabeth's death?!

John Brock, widower, m. Mary Bell 22.6.1802

best wishes

Thanks for the extra information.

I'd be interested to know if you do find we have a common ancestor in John Brock.

Thanks again for all your help,

Margaret
