Hello searchers
Can you identify an Essex registration district from the following
Kate GOUGH
1948 Death registration Essex S W
5a 123
Question - where is Essex SW ca. 1948?
I have tried to solve this puzzle with phone calls to GRO, Southport but have drawn a blank and the local reg offices in Essex, who don't use GRO reference.

Hi Jean
Essex South West Register office closed in 1965 and the registers moved to:
Redbridge
Queen Victoria House
794 Cranbrook Road
Barkingside
Ilford
Essex
IG6 1JS
Tel +44 (0)208 478 3020 ext 8161
or Waltham Forest
106 Grove Road

You may have to contact both to track down which one now has the appropriate register.

Hi Nell,
This is good news and I am very grateful for your help, specially the addresses and phone numbers.
There were one or two family links to Walthamstow so that location does look significant.
Great sleuthing....thanks again

Hi Jean, strange you should ask this question, my mum married her first husband at Essex S W, she told me it was because he was in the army and it was the only place they were allowed to be married, I still dont know why, but I assume its because it was the closest to where the army men were stationed, but I do know it was a registry office wedding, dont suppose thats of much help to you, but couldn't resist responding.

Hello jp
Good to hear from you and of your family in this location. All clues are welcome when trying to piece together the history. I shall be able to visit the local records next week for a rummage in the parish registers and where I hope confirm a few more details.
Many thanks for your interest
