Title: LAVER in Queensland records
Post by: Leanne68 on Monday 20 February 06 23:42 GMT (UK)
Hi folks,

I'm trying to trace any records relating to William LAVER b? d? who apparantly married Annie ROBB b? d?

Their daughter, Margaret LAVER b. 21 Oct 1860 m. Frederick William STARKEY in Mudgeeraba, Queensland in 1883.

I would love to know when William was born or died and who his parents might have been, as well as when he might have travelled to Australia.

thanks in advance

Hello Leanne

Laver is a somewhat famous name in queensland with Rod Laver (Rocket Rod) being a champion tennis player in the 1950s and 60s. It would be interesting if your family are related. I'm sure someone will check the bdms for you - I'll be at the library later in the week if you have not had any info I will check there.

No sign of the marriage of William and Annie Robb (You may get more information from the school mentioned in the links from Cazay)

I think your Margaret was Martha as have a marriage

Martha Laver  Frederick William Starkey 19 Feb 1883  1883/ 000868

There may be some earlier records in NSW - Qld didn't separate until 1860 (I think) - although most records for earlier times are duplicated in both states.

I think there must be a William Henry Jnr as he married in 1884 and had a number of children.

I have some more to transcribe for you.

Hi Trish,

Thank you very much for going to the trouble of doing all those lookups.  The folks over on the QLD rootsweb list have also been very generous with lookups.

You are right about Martha LAVER ... i had her name as Margaret but all records seem to indicate that she was Martha.

I've collected most of the information about the children of William LAVER and Annie Eliza ROBB.   The only two dates of death that i am missing for their children are :

George Charles LAVER (apparantly died in Ispwich area - also no marriage for him)
and
Annie Eliza McLEOD nee LAVER.

I'd also love to know if the following daughters of William and Annie had any children of their own :

Annie Eliza LAVER m. Robert McLEOD on 29 Dec 1884
Jane LAVER m. Arthur HOLLYMAN on 3 Nov 1897

The marriage of David LAVER and Ada Rose BUDD has also not been found - the couple had 5 children between 1908 and 1913.  Ada died in 1913 and David seems to have remarried in 1914, but died a few days after his second wedding!

Thanks once again for taking the time to help me unravel this strand of my family history.

best wishes
Leanne

Before I transcribe the rest of what I have  :)

Do you have the details of the children of Martha & Frederick? I have 4 1884-1889, then one more in 1900?? I then have a marriage in 1910 of Frederick William (same one  ??? ) and Mabel Orrell - they had 4 children to 1913 incl twins.

Ialso have BDMs for the name Laver  1891 to 1914.

I don't have the deaths you were searching for - you probably know -  but the Qld CDs only go to 1914, after that it is searching fiche in 4 year groups at libraries etc.

Trish,  You're a sweety to do this!
Thank you.

I do have the details for the 5 children of Frederick W. STARKEY and Martha LAVER.

Frederick had a nephew, also Frederick William STARKEY, who married Mabel ORRELL 5 Jan 1910.  I have the names of the 4 children but only the date of birth for George Alfred STARKEY (11 Oct 1913), so would very much appreciate the other 3 children's dates :
John Norman STARKEY
Edith Isabella STARKEY
Frederick W.? STARKEY

cheers

Hi Trish,

Thanks for that.  The names I have for the children of Frederick and Martha do match.
The names for Frederick and Mabel are a great help .. .thanks!
John Norman STARKEY and Edith Isabella STARKEY (not on your list) were probably born after 1914.  I didn't have either James or Jack on my list, so thanks for those!

Was just browsing the Laver section and saw your message about William Laver and Annie Robb.  I have some information about them which I received via Bill Laver from Queensland  -  he has done some fairly extensive research into the Laver family and descends from this particular couple.  I also have Laver ancestors, it being my mother's maiden name, and originally descending from the same Laver family.
William Laver was born in 1835 in Ridgewell, Essex and died 29th Dec 1892, Mudgeeraba, buried Nerang cemetry.  His wife Annie Elizabeth Robb was born 1835 in Aberdeen, Scotland and died 12 June 1913 Gympie deep creek, buried Gympie cemetry.   They were married 13 Nov 1854 at Establish Church, St Marylebone, Middlesex UK.  (She was the daughter of William Robb and Mary)

William and Annie's eldest son William Henry was born 2nd Sept 1855 in London, UK but their next child Thomas (born 15th Oct 1858) was born in Australia so they obviously emigrated sometime between those two dates.

William Laver's parents were Thomas Laver born 1811 Ridgewell, Essex and Mary Rawlingson born 1812 Finchingfield, Essex.

Thomas' parents were Joseph Laver born 1761 Ridgewell, Essex and Elizabeth Meyes born 1763.

Hope this is of some use to you.  I descend from William's elder brother George born 1833.

Gillian

Hi Gillian,

What a treat to receive your message in reply to my old posting - and sharing so much info too!  Thank you!

I guess you being descended from Thomas and Mary would mean we're distant cousins then ... the second i've *met* on rootschat.   :)  Did your ancestor, George, remain in England then?

cheers

Hi Leanne
Glad my information was of some help.  I have to admit I haven't done most of the research myself but looking at the document I received from my Laver contact in Australia there were only a few very minor errors in the bits that I knew well, so I'm inclined to think it is all pretty accurate.  (I think he employed a professional genealogist for a lot of it.)
I guess we are "cousins" of some sort if we both descend from Thomas and Mary.  George did stay in England, as have most of his descendants as far as I know. My grandfather  Joseph George Laver (always known as George) was the great grandson of Thomas and Mary and spent most of his life in Essex.
Which Laver do you descend from?
I have quite a bit more information about the family. If you have any specific questions I would be glad to help if I can.

Hi again Gillian,

My LAVER line was alot shorter than yours :-)
Martha LAVER, b 1860, and the niece of your George, married my gg-grandfather, Frederick William STARKEY in 1883.

I'd very much like to make contact with Bill Laver.  Would you be able to email or pm me his address if you still have it on hand?

Hi yet again
Have noticed you also have the name Radford amongst your list  -  that's really strange, it's my married name.  My husband's family originated from the Devon/Somerset area.

Hi Gillian,

Thanks for Bill's address .. i drop him an email tonight.

My RADFORD line, for the time being,  originates in Nottingham.  James RADFORD and Ann? had at least 5 children, all christened at St Mary's in Nottingham between 1791 and 1799.

I have been unable to find Jame's parentage as yet.
