Scattletrap, hope you don't mind but I used your colour version - just adjusted the levels and straigtened the building,

What a gorgeous little pony!  He would have to be a Welsh pony - is this photo from Wales?

Blimey I hope you don't mind my hijacking your conversation but think this may be one of my ancestors!! My Dad's family grew up in The Brynog Arms and I have very fond memories of wandering the vales and hills of ystrad Aeron when we were living in Aberaeron. My Grandmother was Martha ( Known as Patti ) Richards, married to Dai Rees and my Dad was Alun ( brother to Glyn and Megan). I would be interested to hear from anyone who remembers the family and could give me some information about what happened when they were at The Brynog......Thank you, Alma Rae ( nee Rees).

Hi, I don't know if anyone is still active on this thread... and sorry to hijack the previous hijacker... but, I've found this fascinating. I am the present landlady of the Brynog Arms after recently re-opening it and trying to restore the building to its former glory! I'd been told by locals that there was once a coat of arms above the door, I would love to know if there is anyway of finding out the design and colours, so I'm able to have it replaced. Also I'm shocked to see the iron bench in the picture!! I am in the process of having the very same bench restored, it has a brass plaque on the back with E Rees - Aberayron engraved on it.
The 1901 census shows a Margaret Richards, age 52, living there, and her 13 year old daughter Martha!! That would be Alma Rae's Grandmother! Copy of census:

1881 Census

Margaret Richards, age 32, Coachman's wife
William Richards, age 1, son
Annie Herbert, age 18, general servant
Joseph James, age 47, visitor, Master Mariner

1891 Census

David Richards, age 40, publican
Margaret Richards, age 42, wife
William Richards, age 8, son
Mary Richards, age 10, daughter
Margaret Richards, age 6, daughter
Martha Richards, age 3, daughter
Annie Richards, age 5 months, daughter
Jane Jenkins, age 23, general servant
Joseph James, age 57, uncle, Master Mariner, retired

1901 Census

David Richards, age 50, Innkeeper
Margaret Richards, age 52, wife
Mary Richards, age 17, daughter
Martha Richards, age 13, daughter
Joseph James, age 67, boarder, retired Captain (mariner)

I would love to hear back from anyone here

Agree with that David,

Looks like Almzie only ever made one post, but it may be interesting to know what scattletrap's connection is?

Just realised, it's not Scattletrap's but  141291's pic who also hasn't been active on site for nine years.

Thanks for the replies, hadn't realised the op hadn't been active for such a long time, would love to have made contact (keeping fingers crossed), love to know more about the history of the bench too!

Love seeing the 'then' and 'now' pictures. :)

I will send a PM to the original poster on the off chance that they are still around. It doesn't look promising though I'm afraid as they haven't been online in such a long time.

Sarax,  If the original poster is still around they may be able to provide a clearer scan of the coat of arms. Are you hoping to return a coat of arms too?

PS. You might need to replace your replacement windows.  ;)  ;D

Added: Messages sent to Sharon and Tom.

Best I can do, it's no use sharpening (Wouldn't give any more detail)

Looks good Denn, but not enough detail for sarax to have a repro made ....  :( Unless there is another way to find out more about the plaque? Local history society perhaps?

Yes, I had only tried to give enough so that hopefully someone may recognise it. With some luck it may be possible to find out something about the plaque; I've searched some local place names and family names but nothing as yet.

Thanks for the clearer image Denn, not enough detail, but clearer non the less :) I'm looking into local history societies etc. to see if anyone may have more info. And yes Ruskie, I'd love to be able to return the coat of arms back above the doorway! Thanks for sending the pm's, fingers crossed they might reply.

Attached pictures of the bench for anyone interested - Also recent pictures can be found on my website - http://www.brynogarms.co.uk/

p.s. what's up with my windows?  :o ;D

The bench is wonderful sarax! It is amazing that it still survives!

Your windows are not in the style of the original windows that is all.  ;) ;D (your current windows give the pub a different character). I hope you manage to find out the detail in the coat of arms. Someone must have a record of what was on it. Depending on when it was removed, do you have any old timer regulars who may remember it?

I will make a point of popping in for a pint if I'm ever in the area.  ;D

What a coincidence....I have just come across a photo of Edward Lloyd Rees that I bought some time ago as I collect old photos.....he was aborn in Glamorgan in 1870...wouldn't it be amazing if the bench was named after one of his relatives  :o

Hello Sarax,

It has been wonderful seeing images of your historic public inn.

I am very sorry to tell you that sadly Tom's (141291) emails have stopped working and have been bouncing back to us :'( I did do a search for him with the details he gave but nothing...

Regards

Sarah
