Title: Death Record 2nd Lt. War Grave a Major?
Post by: LibbyW on Sunday 19 February 06 15:01 GMT (UK)
On the war deaths index Hadden Royden Todd died Sept 1944 as a 2nd Lt. Yet his War Grave says he's a Major. Would he have been posthumously promoted?? or A typing error? or????

I have got images but I can't get them small enough and keep them readable.

Could it be that he was Acting or Local Major & only a substantive 2Lt?  Certainly not an unusual occurrence.  This could have resulted in the discrepancy.

Yours aye

I really don't know. In all honesty apart from private, corporal and sergeant I have no idea how the ranks go. Now all I need is someone telling me I got these 3 wrong!!!

I will take a look.
But funnily enough I was trolling through the 1881 census and T B Roland is Thomas Bland Roland and his occupation is Shipbuilder JP & TC. Now could this TC tie in with the medal in my other post on this section.
Plus...... I was in Frankby last week looking round graves on the Bennison side of my family tree when my aunt told me a story that she had been told, about Frankby Hall or Manor (she wasn't sure which)had been taken down stone by stone and shipped to America. I thought this tied in with the Bennisons because all bar one of this family emigrated to America & Canada.

Chances are they must have all known one another or at least known of each other........   oooooooooooooooo I wish I could time travel

Thanks Kev

My goodness he's a Sir too.  They say money breeds money. Unfortunately these people are not direct descendants Major Todds wife's, father is my GGUncle (George Wincester Robins).

Major Todds grandmother's father is a William Pilkington (according to the census) a ......... glass manufacturer I wonder if its the Pilkington. Altho my mum says not, she believes another of GG Uncle Georges daughter Ethel Gabrielle Robins marries a William Lee Pilkington at Chester Cathedral in 1935

and

another of my GG Uncles daughters (Olive Gertrude) married Admiral Sir Charles Madden there was a Miss Roseann Madden as a bridesmaid to Major Todds daughters wedding wonder if this is their daughter.

Thanks Kev for opening an enormous door for me if you don't see any posts from me for a while I'n probably deep inside times online

My friend and I both collect medals etc to Our surnames, Mine duggan, and my friends: TODD.

Late last year he purchased a set of Majors shoulder Pips and a news papers article in a small case perporting to be those of Major TODD.

I did the research that was available, ie CWGC, and the war diary at the National archives etc....and left a link here as I found a thread on him.

So I was wondering if you have any original documents or photographs of his, i can get copied for My friends archives

I can give you my email address later if there is good news!.

Runje - if your mother was one of the two daughters of Major Hadden W Todd, then you and I are fifth cousins.  I can trace these Haddens back to William H, d.1754, and the Todds only back to Joseph T, father of Thomas T, 1804-1868.  So perhaps quite a bit of info to share, maybe too much to do on the list ?? - I can usually be found at rootsweb(dot)only(Atte)virgin[net]

I AM INTERESTED IN SPEAKING TO YOU RUNJE!!  I have been doing some work for a friend of mine, who found a letter in a second hand book.  It was from Evelyn Mary Todd nee Royden- who appears to be Hadden Royden Todd's mother.
We're based in Liverpool. And it would be really great to find some living relatives of Evelyn.

Officers are well documented in war diaries so I would be pretty certain to say that his death is more thank likely recorded in the units war diary at the National Archives in London
