Hi...I'm hoping someone can look for some info for me......two-fold query relating to George Crichton.
1. details of his DC........22 November 1986, somewhere in British Columbia, aged about 82, second wife still alive in 2001.....K- Woods-Crichton
2. any details of his time in Montreal......first wife with surname Ross, first name possibly Helen....had 2 children....one son possibly called R- Crichton.
He was President of Sheffield Steel Company in mid 1900s.....anyone know of archives for this company? Is it still in existence?
Would really appreciate some help.......many thanks........Zil

Found a George Crichton age 81 in West Vancouver...the dates match up other than the year...so it most likely is his...Nov.22 1985
Found here...
http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-536748B/gbsearch/Births,Marriages,Deaths
I take it you were hoping to get the obit in order to find offspring? I might be able to get someone in B.C. to do a lookup, if I can catch her on time....
cannot help in Montreal, but good luck!

I found the article that you may have gleaned your information from... I like this lady and her terrific outlook on life...I will put the article here should someone want to read it....
http://www.nsnews.com/issues01/w031901/living/seniors-heritage/18-seniors-finkbeiner.html
have requested an obit look up so we shall see what comes of it..J.J.

Many thanks, J.J., for your positive response. Yes, I did read that article....I wonder if K- is still around? The 1985 death date seems to match all info I've got at this point. I'd like to view the contents of the DC to establish that this is the correct George Crichton from my tree......how do I go about this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Great, J.J. I've taken a note of the info from that site and will make arrangements to make contact with the appropriate agency. I'm most grateful for all your help. I'm hoping to be in a position to put his only Crichton niece in touch with any members of the family I can find. Many thanks again.....Zil

http://www.sheffieldsteel.com/
all I can find with the name...wouldn't hurt to ask if they had a subsidiary in Montreal in the mid 20th century and if they have any archival info for you....

These people are known to be very helpful....maybe they can help or direct you to some resources.
I would direct you to the Montreal archives online if I could find a translated version for you....J.J.

J.J.......I'm following up your suggestions and have communicated with Sheffield Steel.....will hope for a positive response.....many thanks for the continued support.....Zil

http://www.simt.co.uk/index.html ( Sheffield Industrial Museums )
Better, yet...the original Sheffield steel originated out of England, right....so they
may have shut down production since and that's why i can't find anything recent...So perhaps the archives at Sheffield might help ?
Grasping at straws perhaps...but one never knows who has this information...

Thanks, J.J. I sent my query to the general Sheffield Steel Headquarters and asked to be re-directed to the appropriate branch....if one exists. George Crichton worked in the English plant before emigrating. I don't know when he moved to Canada, but I'll make some enquiries. His niece can remember him coming back to the UK with his wife, Helen Ross and 2 children. She may be able to pinpoint when that was.....she thinks he may have married in Canada but Helen came from Ross-shire in Scotland. That's what makes it interesting that George married K- , who came for that part of Scotland too, although born abroad. ( I know he knew K-'s first husband too........info gleaned from that great article in the newspaper) Zil

Hello
You may be able to find George in Lovell's Montreal Directories. This is an English directory that is published yearly and is so far available on line up to 1950. It is free! It lists heads of households, addresses, and occupations. There is a link under Canada Resources in Research Links: Directories (sorry, I don't know how to attach links). The headings for directories up to 1930 are in English; they are in French after that. The French heading for the alphabetized last-name section is "annuaire alphbetique montrealais". You may need to be a bit creative with spelling; you may find changes from year to year. Once you have an address, you can also look that up year by year to see who is living there, as a cross-reference; households get missed some years.
The Research Links: Directories resource also contains links to business directories but I haven't used them yet and thus don't know what they cover.
Happy hunting.

Never know what dropping a line can do...

That's great, J.J. Many thanks. I'll follow up the D- Calders in West Vancouver. I keep hoping that someone on the site will recognise names. Thanks to you and your friend, we are now one step further on. I'm still trying to find a contact in Montreal......but it's a big place!!!!!!! George's niece was delighted with the DC info and can remember George and his wife Helen (Ross) being in the UK with their daughter, J- round about 1944 - 1948, she thinks. She would so love to have contact with any members of the family, as she is George's only Crichton niece still alive.

Hi, Zil...Hope you managed to find more...Is this thread completed, now?
Polar Bear...Do you know how to put a link into the messages, now? Simply a matter of copy and paste...
If they are too big ( wide) to fit on the page...Just go to tinyurl.com,,,,paste it in there, and voila... a small url to paste into the replies...
all the best, J.J.

Hello J.J.
Thank you for the directions regarding links; hints were still needed. I will try them next time I want to add a link to a message.
