Title: local newspaper archieve search (thanet)
Post by: jax on Saturday 18 February 06 15:22 GMT (UK)
hi

im not sure if anybody would have access to search the thanet local papers?

If anybody does and find that they would be able to do a search for me i would be very grateful.

I am looking for the story of bombing raid over Ramsgate and surrounding towns on 15/16 august 1943 as this was the cause of my g grandfather's death.

His bungalow in Dumpton, Ramsgate was hit by a bomb and he died in the General Hospital on 16th August 1943.  I have found him on the CWGC site.

thank you in advance for any help.

I've just come on here to post the same question!!! I'm looking for a report on the death of Florence Harriet Mills in 1942.  She was killed in a road traffic accident by a drunk sailor and I'm hoping there might be a report of the inquest.

I can't find any archives of this newspaper.

Love

On Monday 16th August 1943 at Ramsgate at 23.21pm five exploive bombs fell from an unidentified aircraft just before midnight and straddled the western end of West Dumpton Lane, where a bungalow called The Hut was wrecked. The wooden structure had almost disappeared in the explosion. Wreckage was strwen everywhere. Sixty five year old John TWYMAN was found seriously injured and died later at Ramsgate General Hospital, his wife Thirsa, although terribly injured, survived the ordeal, as did four others who were injured.

Will see what I can find in Thanet Gazette next week!

Gromit, if you had a month or location I may be able to help.

Here you go.....

Isle of Thanet Gazette
Friday August 20th 1943 Page 2

Died on Birthday

An elderly man was killed and three other people slightly injured when a bomb fell in a disused Brickfield on the outskirts of a South East Coast Town, causing damage to several bungalows near by including one occupied by a Mr and Mrs John TWYMAN and their four children.

Mr TWYMAN, a Rag and Bone dealer, was about to dress when the bombs fell. The blast smashed the wooden shell of the building and the side where Mr and Mrs TWYMAN had been sleeping was completely wrecked. Mr TWYMAN was severly injured in the side and after being assisted by wardens was taken by ambulance to hospital where he died  the following morning - his seventy third birthday. Mrs TWYMAN, suffering mainly from shock was also removed to the hospital and detained.

Mrs Hewitt, the occupier of another bungalow, was just leaving the bedroom when the bomb burst and glass showered over her causing injuries to her back. After treatment in the hospital she was allowed to return home. Her thirteen year old son and his two brothers and a sister all escaped injury.
Slight injuried were also sustained by the occupier of another bungalow.
The worst damage in the district was to a pair of bungalows situated between the spot where the bomb fell and a council housing estate. Both were unoccupied but furnished and thier fronts were wrecked.

Your most welcome. Am a bit of a Thanet Local and Family history buff.

There was a difference in age from my notes and what was in the Thanet Gazette, with you being related I am sure you will know which was correct.
Which War memorial was he remembered on?

Regards
Suzannah

Hello again

I noticed the age difference too... I will have to check that one out to confirm, but am in the middle of moving house at the mo so am about to lose my internet connection within the next week or so.  I am sure I have his birth details somewhere amongst my research, but is all packed away!!

I do know that I have been searching for what seems like forever for his marriage to his wife - and cannot find it anywhere..  She is rumoured to be a gypsy.  Her name was Thrisa Hilden I am told - but she is very elusive - even her birth and death I have been unable to trace to date.

He is on the CWGC site  :)

thank you again for your help - its really appreciated  ;D

Can't find John's Marriage to Thirsa? We''ll have a chat once youv'e settled in, good luck with the move!
I would be interested to know where John Twyman was born as there was so many in Thanet at that time, still are really.

I have John's death registered as Q September 1943 Vol 2a Page 13 aged 66? Thanet. So many variations on his age.

hello again Foads Family

now finally settled (well almost) in new home and have begun to pick up family tree threads again..  So I thought I would drop you a line as requested.

In answer to previous question John Twyman was born Thanet about 1877, son of John b abt: 1831 and Mary b abt: 1840 (both Margate I believe)

][/color].  I think he was married before Thrisa because there were two stepchildren, names Annie Twymand and Jerry (could be short for Gerald) Twyman.  I havent been able to find the John/Thrisa marriage either and wonder if they did ever get married at all?

I cant even find her death registration, in fact no birth, marriage or death, which would help me to determine her age and where she was from.  Hence my family line currently ends with Thrisa on that side of the family.  However, there are, as you know, many many Twymans in Thanet - and I am sure there are many of whom I dont have info on yet..

I wonder if you have any info or connections on any of the above?

If you are interested I have a website:

look forward to hearing from you again

Title: Twyman Margate
Post by: Foad Family Kent on Monday 09 October 06 21:44 BST (UK)
I see John Twyman 1877 aged 4, with his parents on the 1881 Census at 2 Crofts Court, Margate
John aged 47 is a Hawker and Mary is aged 40 both born Margate.
Crofts Court is no longer there but I do have it clearly shown on some maps, in the Market Place of the Old Town, so John senior was probably a Fish hawker.
John and Mary also have a daughter Mary aged 7 on this census.

On the 1901 Census, John W Twyman is aged 24, married to Alice aged 20 and head of the household, with him is his widowed mother mary Ann.
John is a Labourer of 15 Florence Cottages (off High Street). Annie born Salisbury Wiltshire

John Twyman married Alice Leonard Q Dec 1889 Thanet Vol 2a Page 2136.

So, what can I help with?

I have never been able to find her death and she was not married by 1902 at least according to this report!
8th March 1902 Keble's Gazette
Her Eight Appearance
Lily TWYMAN was charged with being drunk and incapable in Stanley Road at an early hour on Wednesday Morning, and pleaded that she was guilty and very sorry. P.Sgt BINNIE deposed that at 12.10 that morning he found the defendant lying helplessly drunk and fast asleep on the footway. He procured the assistance of P.C. MINTER, and by that time the defendant had rolled into the gutter, where she was still sleeping soundly. He took her to the Police Station on a barow. Chief Constable CLEGG said this was defendants eighth appearance at Margate, besides several times in Ramsgate. She had been taken in hand by Miss Smart, who found a home for her, but she ran away from it. The Mayor said defendant always expressed sorrow but did not seem to mend her ways. She was fined 10 shillings and 5 shillings costs with an alternative of 10 days imprisonment. Time for payment was refused.

Yes I have that insert about Lily :)   I see that Charlotte was Walters daughter.....I see also that Arthur, Walter, Lily and their father were all drinkers :(  but the other siblings  seemed to live quieter lives..That Herbert N.'s son Stephen married in 1919 and also became and Inn owner like his father.:)-  well I guess that someone has to claim this family.  Ada was a great grandmother to all of us-she loved all her children.  She said that she was ( was a Staurt of Stewart or d- possbile father)) but we will never know. p.s. Who are Mick Twymans people?? micheal who died 2010-the historian of Margate??   tks so much for the info.    Patricia

Hi, wondering if anyone would be able to find something from possibly around 2002/03. It was a newspaper article regarding Ramsgate Operatic Society performing Fiddler on the Roof and having 3 generations of family performing.

I had the cut out of this, as this was me, my mum and my grandma but unsure of its whereabouts. If anyone is able to help, this would be brilliant as my mum is no longer alive and would be brilliant to see this article again.
