Hello all ,
Looking for someone with some knowledge of churches in Huddersfield.
I have 2 marriage certificates here the 1st is my gt gt grandmothers marriage in 1898 at St Marks Church in the parish of St Marks Huddersfield .
2nd is her mothers , my gt gt gt grandmothers in 1887 (3rd marriage) at St Pauls Church in the Parish of St Pauls Huddersfield .
Would i be correct in thinking that St Pauls is now owned by the university and used as a concert hall ?.
I can find no mention of St Marks on the net , has this maybe been demolished ?

Tracey,
Yes. St. Paul's is now a concert hall run by the University. We put on one or two concerts every year.
Don't know about St. Mark's (I'm not local) but look up the Chapelry of Longwood, Huddersfield, on Genuki. That might be it.

Thanks Jon ,
Pleased the St Pauls is still there , can only find 1 picture of it on the web but looks a beautiful building .
I was born and bred in Huddersfield (south lincs now) and do know where it is , trouble is you dont take much notice of churches in your late teens early twentys !!
I do know St Marks at Longwood quite well , it is just behind the prospect pub ;D !!
Dont know if this is the one as they all lived down the Leeds road area , union street .... which i now believe is a car showroom !!

Most of Leeds Road seems to be a car showroom these days!

Tracey,
[Back on topic now]
I suddenly thought to look up Huddersfield in the Gazetteer. Mr. Bartholomew says (shout if you can't follow the abbreviations):
Huddersfield, parl. and co. bor. and par., with ry. sta., L.M.S., S. div W. R. Yorks, 16.5 m. SW. of Leeds, 25.75 m. NE. of Manchester and 189 m. NW. of London; parl and co. bor., 14,288 ac., pop 125,000; par., 4055 ac., pop. 51,655; eccl. dists. (Holy Trinity), 6468; (St. Andrew), 4683; (St. John), 10,728, (St. Mark), 3550; (St. Paul), 4819; (St. Peter), 4840; (St. Thomas), 4279. Huddersfield is the chief centre of the branch of mfr. known as the fancy woollen trade, but every description of plain and fancy woollen goods is manufactured.
The population figures are from the 1951 Census. The rest of the info is probably much older.
What made me think to check was that you wrote "St. Mark's Church in the Parish of St. Mark's". Usually, churches are named after saints but parishes are named after places.
If you look on the Wakefield diocese web site, it says that the Parish of Longwood is now in the Rural Deanery of Huddersfield, which roughly corresponds to the old Parish of Huddersfield. So I reckon it is the right St. Mark's.
I bet you will find that your g-g-grandmother lived in Longwood, as marriages are always xxxxxx usually held in the bride's parish.

Hi Tracey
What part of Huddersfield do you hail from ?
For many years St Pauls has been known as the Drill Hall and was used by the TAs and the Air Cadets as a meeting place and training base.
I aslo remember going to a christmas party there when Iwas about 4 and santa gave me a silver gun in a holster and a magician scared the crap out of me.
Ah memories eh!

Hi Joe
St Pauls Church is on St Pauls Street (I was born there) the University now stands on part of it. I have St Marks Church clearly marked on a 1907 map of Huddersfield. My Grandmother lived at the bottom of Northumberland Street and on the census form for 1901 it states the parish of St Marks.

Please accept my apologies Lord Ted, I didnt mean to sound rude and now Im curious, is it the big church at the back of the market hall ?
Joe

Hi Joe
No need to aplogise your'e not rude at all. The church by the Market hall is St Pauls. It's across from the Zetland pub.
Ted

Hi Joe
Sorry if I sounded a bit abrupt.
Ted

Dont apologise Ted no way were you abrupt.
Joe
-
Hi all ,
thanks for all that info , i know exactly which is st pauls ......used to frequent the zetland pub on a regular basis (BC of course .... before children !!).
Ted do you know if the st marks behind the sports centre is still there or has it been demolished ?
Joe you asked where i hail from ...... i'll just say i'm a Golcar Lily ;D ...... the theory about the saying golcar lily being about the ladies of the village is my favourite explanation ! Dont live in Hudds now so its great to be able to ask folk from the area info via rootschat :)

Hi Tracey,
Here's a small area of the map showing St Marks, Northgate and Union St.
Regards
Ted
-
Thats fantastic Ted ,
Mercy's daughter Hephzibah my gt gt grandmother lived at 34 union street in the year 1898 . I have tryed to locate it before and only got the general area . I tried google earth and it looks mainly industrial units etc now .
I may be wrong but i came to the conclusion in my estimations (prob wrong !! haha) that union street would of been where the hyundai showroom is now across from the rover dealers ......does this sound about right to you or am i barking up the wrong tree .
Tracey

Lord Ted
Could you please send me the link to the map site you use
Thanks Joe
-
Hi Joe,
It's a map I bought a while ago from W H Smiths, I can't find it on the net anywhere. The info for the map is Old Ordnance Survey Maps Central Huddersfield 1905, The Godfrey Edition. Smiths should be able to locate one for you.

For many years after St Marks ceased to be used as a church, it was used by Huddersfield Sea Cadets. Then 'The Church' put the rent up and they had to move out. It was then used by an office furniture company who purchased ex-govt stuff, refurbished it and sold it on.

The series of Alan Godfrey maps are available online, and at Family History Fairs, costing from memory about £2.60
There are several maps covering the Huddersfield area, including: Central Huddersfield 1889 and Central Huddersfield 1905. St Marks Church is clearly shown at the bottom of Northumberland street, on the Huddersfield Central map of 1905. Reference Yorkshire sheet 246.15
Hope this helps.
