Hello there,
My father was born at 113 St. Helen's Road, Swansea in 1896.

hi romilly, i checked out 93 st helens rd, yes the house is still there, it`s got two big bay windows in the front.. it is a house now.. i asked the lady, who i go and see, and she says she`s been living there 50 yrs, most of the houses on the road are 150 yrs + old.. when she first moved in, there was talk of pulling them down.. but they were saved by a man called George, i will find out his full name for you.. do you have a photo of 93 st helens rd.. if not i will take a pic for you,
hope this helps , regards Sharon

Hi Sharon,
Many thanks for your help. No, sadly I don't have a photo of 93 St. Helen's Road, - I used to have one of my Grandmother, Margaret Wilson, standing outside it when it was a shop, - but it got lost during one of my house moves. A photo of 93 would be great, thanks!
My Grandparents, William James Wilson & Margaret Wilson, (née Rees) lived in St. Helens Road from 1893 until about 1920, when they moved to Y Plas, Llangyfelach Road. Their youngest son, Archie committed suicide at Y Plas in 1930, (he cut his throat) & after that the family left Wales & moved to Wembley, Middx. It must have been a terrible upheaval for my Grandmother, - she was Welsh speaking & I've tracked her family back in Swansea to the 1790's, - (they were Rees's & Griffiths). She died in Wembley in 1934.
I'm attaching a photo of her with my father & 2 of his brothers; which must have been taken when they were living at 113 St Helens Road.
Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hi Sharon,
Many thanks for the pics of 93 St Helen's Road.
Yes, it does look like it could've been run as a shop, doesn't it?
I must check with the Trade's Directories for Swansea, & see how long Wilson & Co were there for. (I know that it was at that address in 1918).
Thanks for the help! (I still haven't had any luck with tracking down any old photos of St Helens Road:-(
Best Wishes, Romilly.

I know St Helens Road, Swansea and I have to say that I cannot place the picture! And to say that the sea is on the doorstep is hard to believe as the road is on a rise that must be 30 feet min above sea level and the sea is probably at least 200 yards away!

Just looking again I think the house is not on St Helens Road but is a bit further on - I think the road has a different name. If still relevant please let me know and I'll have a look.
Apologies if I've misread the other poster on this topic. And is it 93 or 113 that you're after?

Hi Bernard,
Thanks for your interest.
Yes, I think the Roads have been re-named somehow. I know that we drove around for ages looking for it when we visited in May.
113 is where my father was born in 1896, and 93 is where my Grandfather, William James Wilson ran the family painting & decorating business from, (Wilson & Co).

I agree wholeheartedly with Bernard. St. Helens Road starts at Kingsway roundabout near YMCA and ends just after the old Swansea Hospital (now retirement flats) not far from Joes Ice Cream Parlour. Leading towards The Guildhall, the houses on the right would be on St.Helens Avenue. Far enough from the sea I would have thought.

???
hi romilly, how are you, long time since i`ve been on here, i can see there`s a bit of confusion as to where st helens rd starts & ends, but the photo i posted for you is st helens rd, when it passes the crown crt, it tapers of to the left, down to mumbles rd, which is on the seafront, st helens ave is further over... and the road passing the guildhall is called guild hall south.. hope this helps.. i have checked my a-z, and it is all accurate// best wishes .. sharon

Hi Sharon,
Nice to hear from you again! :D
My previous account got scrambled, - hence the new name.
I know that you're right, - I stood outside that house in May and looked at the sea-front!!!
Somewhere, I've got a pic of the road showing the sea at the end of it.
We did get a bit confused trying to find it by car, - mainly because of the St Helen's Avenue bit, but it is definately there. (Its at the Oystermouth Rd end). See Link:
