Hello
I would be willing to help people out on searches in the above areas and surrounding villages.

Hi! my G grandfather Alexander Pennie ( I think his middle name was Lee or Lea) married Ann Robertson 5/4/1877 in either Old or New Deer. I know a bit about the Pennies but nothing of Ann Robertson. I would be grateful for any information.
thanks

Hello,
I am not sure how close this is, but my husbands gr.gr. grandparents were from Mastrick. Andrew Clubb & Jane Smith Clubb. They were married 20 june 1870 in New Deer. Is there any way to find information on them?
They had 5 children Chrissy, Jane, Margaret, Helen & William. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paula
Do you know whether they remained in Scotland or did they emigrate to the States?
kind regards

Norma,
From what I understand they stayed, she was hit by a car and died sometime around 1920. They lived in a farm in Upper Matrick, were a business district was built...shopping center(?) I have a picture of the homestead. I am not sure when Andrew died, I believe he was living when Jane passed. He was born may 26, 1844 in Aberdour, she was born around 1849 in New Deer, I don't have a deffinate date or parents for her though. I do have quite a bit on the Clubb side, any more would be great. I am really trying to find more on the Smith's at this time.
That is all I have. My husbands grandmother is 96 and I have asked her questions, but her father came to the States in 1906 and she doesn't recall much of what he told her. Thank you so very much for your response and any help you may be.

Hi Paula
I'll have a look around from tomorrow if that's ok, if you have an address for their homestead I could find out what's there now and take an up to date photo for you too.
take care

Norma,
You are wonderful! I don't have a date on the photo, but I would say it was taken at the begining of the 1900's. the note says Grandpa Clubb's family farm in Scotland before the new business district was built. On the site of Upper Mastrick farm, Mastrick housing estate now has its own shopping center.
Apparently he won silver medals for the best kept farm in the county(?)
I don't know if this helps, but I have no more.
Thank you once again for your help,
Paula

Hi Paula
I had a bit of a snoop around New Deer and hopefully I may have something for you.
Of course I need to see proper certificates to authenticate but this is what I found.
In a cafe in New Deer they happen to have transcriptions of the people buried in New Deer Cemetary, there were a few Smiths which I can imagine would be related somehow as in 1801 there were only 1300 people in the area.
This is the transcription I found most interesting.
"Erected by WILLIAM SMITH feuar New Deer in memory of his wife JANE CENTER
d 12 Feb 1870 aged 59. Above WILLIAM SMITH d 5 June 1884 in 81st year. Their youngest son WILLIAM merchant New Deer d 4 May 1898 aged 53"
Now it seems to me Paula more than coincidental that this woman is a Jane and her husband and son both William, could these be your Jane's parents and brother?
I noticed your Jane also called her daughter Jane and son William..a family tradition. Another thing the name CENTER..well it seems they have the names Helen and Christine (Chrissy?) amongst them too . The ages of the above William and Jane fit with your Jane I think. Let me now your thoughts.
best wishes

Hello Norma,
You are awesome! William is a family name on the Clubb side, every generation had a William Young Clubb. Chrissy is most likely to be after Andrew's mother Christian, but both Helen and Jane are new to this line. SOOOO we may be on to something! I will try to look around from here online on those dates and names. Thank you so very much. If you happen to come across anything more in your travels please let me know. Is there any way to check obituaries in the area from the early 1900's? I was wondering if there would be any record of a hit and run in the 1920 era?Thank you once more for all your help.

Hi Paula
The William I gave you was a Smith so I was wondering if maybe it was Jane Smith's Dad especially as his wife was a Jane too. I will see what I can find out on the car incident, was that in Mastrick? There is a place in Edinburgh that holds all Church Records but I think you have to pay for copies or for their time or something. Because you have the marriage date it would be easy peasy to get their certificate then you would at least have her age and fathers name..then you would be really on to something. ;)
best wishes
Norma.
ps
Where did your side originate?

Norma,
You have been great, I thought doing a family tree would be fun, I didn't realize it was something I was going to need therapy for- I am hooked! I played around with it in school years ago for a project (my mat. grandmother had oodles of papers on her side) I hadn't done anything with it since, until I had my son 7 years ago. Then I started poking around again...I could go on all day, but will shorten it- my family has been in the States since the Salem Which trials- Putnams are easy to trace, Moulton's were gold/silversmiths. Morrill's ran a 'House of Entertainment"(what do you think that means???)
Caldwell's were in the Civil War, and so on...My husband's family is new to the States mid1880's to 1900 and are giving me a run for my money. My mat. Grandfather's family settled in the town I grew up in in the 1600's and I lived in the original homestead...my son and I have been photographing the cemeteries in town and I think I have him hooked already. I want to find out as much as I can, my husband jokes that I have traced us back to the dinosaurs... not quite that far but I can claim Charlemagne.
I did look around a little last night for William Smith, but I don't have anything concrete as of yet...it is a good lead though. Would you know how much a Marriage Cert. would cost?? My grandmother's pen pal is coming in the spring for a visit and I could have her look into it possibly...she is from Scotland, but I am not sure where. I will have to find out.
Thanks so much,
Paula
