My grandmother's families (Swales & Taylor) came from Durham. The Swales family from Hartlepool orginated (as far as my research has gone) with John Swales (abt. 1784-1827) who married Jane Hunter - children James (b1810 - more presently), Mary Ann(b1812 & d1812), James (b1815) & Robert. This James married Margaret Turner in 1836 and had children - Margaret (b1837 & m Joseph N Metcalf); John (n1840 & m Anne Errington); Jane Elizabeth (b c1845 & m Thomas B Purves); Mary Anne (b1845 & m George William Taylor - both migrated to Australia); James Swales (b1847 & m firstly Anne Plaice & sec. Christine Hornby); Emma Turner Swales (b1849 & m James G King); Sarah (b1851 & m James A Armstrong); Alice (b1857 & m George M Hedley)
The Taylor family (m above to Mary Ann) came from the South Shields area. George Taylor (b c1795 & m to Kathleen ??) were parents to Christopher Taylor b 1820 who married a Sarah Hodgson in 1841 in Jarrow. Their children were the George William Taylor b 16/9/1842 who married Mary Ann Swales above and a brother William who was perhaps a teacher in London.
Very interested to contact anyone with connections to any of these families.

Hi Judy,
I know it's 2 yrs since you posted this query about the Swales family, but I've just been helping a friend with her Hedley ancestors and she's the great-granddaughter of Alice Swales/George Milburn Hedley. Without seeing your posting, I too have got back as far as John Swales/Jane Hunter. I'd be glad to pass on to you what I've found about Alice and her descendants (it makes very sad reading) and would love to know more about the rest of the family. Will pm you my email address so that we can swap info.
Kind regards, Barbara

Hello there. I'm new to this site so i hope you're still interested in your family history... Your message interested me as my name is now Swales. My father in Law's father was sidney Swales, his father was Errington Swales, and as you can imagine, his parents were John and Ann Errington.
Let me know if you are still interested in your research as i'd love to compare notes.
