Would like to know the christian names of the McNeills who lived in 22 Glenpark Street, Belfast. in 1900/1910
also if the Butler family (John, Peter, Harry, Sarah, Mary.) lived in Whiteabbey in 1870 -1890. Would be very grateful for any info no matter how little. Thanks

Hi MollyRose
Couple of useful references in "Glenravel Online" timelines. This is a collection of newspaper extracts.
July 1885 - "John Maloney and John Butler were charged with violently assaulting William Murray on the Shore Road, with an iron bar and a poker. They were remanded."
The Shore Road runs from Belfast along the North shore of the Belfast Lough and eventually goes through Whiteabbey towards Carrick. It not clear what part of the Shore Road this story refers.
Dec 1896 - "Nancy and Mary Jane Butler were accused on the wilful murder of a female child in Ballycastle. Dr McIlroy concluded that the child was newborn and had suffocated. The two prisoners were found not guilty and discharged."
Hope this is of help

Gary thank you for info on the Butlers. The Mary Jane Butler you referred to is not my Mary but I don't know about the John (my Grandfather). There are a few Butler families between Carrick and Whitehouse. You just never know what you're going to find out about your relatives. Thanks again :o

Dear Mollyrose
I am looking for a Barr family in Whitehouse/Whiteabbey who married into the Butler family.
I have a John Barr who married a Margaret Butler in 1896 Whitehouse Witnesses the Mulhollands
They have at least one child in 1897 in Whiteabbey called Henry. One of the witnesses here was a Henry Butler.
I couldn't find the family on the 1901 census yet in Whitehouse unless I missed them - time was tight. Would these be connected to your family. I haven't yet found out what happened to this family.
I also have a quick note of a Mary Butler from whiteabbey marrying a Mulholland with John Barr as a witness in 1895 - not sure how accurate this note is. I'll look into it.

Hi Fiona,
Thanks for the information, but the Margaret Butler (my aunt) dob 25/7/1911 was married to Hugh Crossan. The Harry Butler (uncle) dob would be c1875. But the funny thing is My Gt. Aunt Sarah Corrigan (nee Butler) who brought up my mother Kathleen Butler dob 1915 well one of her daughters married a Mulholland they had I think 5 Children but I remember my mother telling me about Katie Barr and Annie Barr dob c1885 they never married. they were related in some way to the Butlers, they all worked in the Linen Mill. I'm hoping to go to Whiteabbey this year and will try and check out Census in Proni.
Thanks again for taking the time to write maybe we are related in some odd way.

I'm looking in the same area as you are so I'll keep you posted about Butlers - Had a quick look at street directories [why do I only ever have 10 mins everywhere?] in Belfast Library 1911. found the following Butlers:
WHITEABBEY
Henry Butler hacker 3 Concrete St
Eliza Butler 20 Office St
James Butler 49 Main Street
I'll be looking again through most of the years so I'll keep you posted.

Hi again Fiona (not Jo ::))
Thanks for keeping me in mind. I notice you also have McGarrys in your family tree. My Grandmother was Catherine McGarry from Co. Antrim? married Joseph Grew from Co Armagh they came over to Scotland and married in West Calder I think Catherine had a sister living somewhere in Scotland she was a midwife I think.
I wonder if there is any connection to your McGarrys.
Jo :)

Yes I do have McGarrys - At the top of my tree in 1800's a Henry McGarry married a Mary Barr and they had several children in Antrim. The Barrs married the Palmers and the McGarrys married the Palmers! Yes I think quite often connected families are intertwined. I notice that Barrs are marrying McGarrys too in Belfast.
I don't however have a Catherine McGarry in my tree and so I don't have any records yet. Can you give me a few more details and I'll keep an eye out? Who did your Catherine marry? I know there are a few McGarrys in Ballycastle too.

More details for you to add to your list.
Joseph Grew dob 1875 originally from Armagh then Whiteabbey. married Catherine McGarry dob 1973 originally Co. Antrim then Addiewell, Scotland they married in West Calder Scotland 16/2/1896 Catherine's parents names Felix McGarry and Bridget Mullan.
Thank you so much for keeping me in mind when you are searching. I really appreciate it.

I get the feeling we are working with the same families but how they are connected I don't know!
Yes I have a record of a Felix McGarry and a Mary Crory (? not too sure of this) having children including a Sarah 1836 and a Felix 1834 or so. This reference is to the Tannaghmore RC church near Randalstown.
Other common names that keep cropping up are Madden, McNally, McAteer, McQuillan.
Hope this might give you some ideas of where Catherine may have come from. A lot of the McGarrys were fishermen on Lough Neagh. Around 1880 there appears to be a large exodus of everyone from the country into Belfast and there are a few McGarrys in Belfast.
:D

Only just joined up & not quite sure how to work this computer yet - but I have 3 (three) Felix McGarrys on my family tree, who were fishermen from around 'the lough'.
Feel free to contact me.
Cheers - Gabe

I am just placing all my mcgarry info in gedcom - all from Antrim area - It might correlate with your own information - I think I may have been in touch with you before - if you send me a personal message with your email I would be happy to send you my information at present - provosional as it is. I still can't find where my own Henry Mcgarry was baptised....
Oh by the way I do have a Felix McGarry and Mary Craig who have children circa 1830 - Ann, Sarah and Felix - Drumaul.
-
I have just discovered that a John Barr born 1867 - matching my John Barr works as a stationmaster following my Palmers on the railways around N Ireland - he retires to Whitebbey becoming a Porter by about 1911. My family also worked in Whitehouse Linen Mill. I think there is a strong chance they may be linked - have you any Records of the Barrs in Whiteabbey linked to Butlers? I think I'll have a further dig around.
-
Thanks Gabe,
I only have a one McGarry in my tree my Grandmother Catherine dob 1873 and I think she came from Loch Neagh married Joseph Grew and moved to Scotland so I don't know much about the McGarrys but would love to find out about Catherine's family maybe one of your Felix is a relation. FionaLorraine is going to send me info on the McGarrys so I am quite excited as it may be linked to my family tree. Thank you for your kind offer.

2 of the 1911 census microfilms arrived - not the one we really wanted! The LDS place was completely and utterly packed - after an hour and a half to get there and some babysitting arranged it was a bit disappointing not to have much time. Maybe we'll get back soon to look again - I looked at one film and Dad at the other - he had to zip through it as they were chucking us off....However he did note a John Butler as head of household - pity I wasn't doing that film as I would've noted the family but that's how it goes! I would like to take another look again:
Whitehouse Upper [Head of Household]
...Robert Black, William Goodall, John Butler, Thomas Smyth.....

I have just found John Barr and Margaret Butler [born about 1870] in 1901 in Eglington Co Derry with Son Henry and a daughter Annie born about 1900 - looks like your Annie Barr may tie in then with my family. He was a stationmaster for a while in Eglington.

In response to Butlers in Whiteabbey found 1911. I have been searching for desendents of Patrick Joseph Butler and Agnes Butler. Also, saw someone had film of Patrick Josheph and Agnes Butler. I would love to see that. Patrick Joshep is my grandfather and I have never seen him. Patrick Joseph left my father when he was young, so my dad has never seen him either. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I am interested in the Butlers from whiteabbey. I think there are at least 2 families that lived in concrete street and Main street. Both appear to have similair names in their families. One of the families has a John Butler who died in WW1, the other a John Butler married to Jane Butler in the 1901 census living in 19 Concrete street. I am looking for my Grandfather, Edward Butler. I have had no luck at all finding him. Every Edward Butler in the Census (both 1901 and 1911) is not my Edward Butler. I am now working on the assumption that he was christened with another name, maybe Edward was a second name he later took. All I know is he had a brother called James and his father was John. I have been told they were from the Whiteabbey area. My Grandfather was born circa 1897. I have a marriage certificate for him (he is called Edward in the certificate) his father John is listed as dead by this time (1922) and a witness at the wedding was James Butler. Edward was in WW1 and WW2 and lived until 1983. He married in Lancaster in 1922 and went on to have 3 daughters and 1 son. He later returned to Ireland were he met and married my Grandmother and had my mother. He was stationed in Holywood in circa 1940's. Any help much appreciated.
