At his daughter ELIZABETH's wedding in 1856,
WILLIAM NEWTON, a railway porter, was present.
Elizabeth, b. 1834/5, described her place of birth as BUCKLEY, Northamptonshire on the 1881 census, though I'm not sure that place exists. She might have meant Long Buckby, I suppose.
Her wedding took place in Birmingham (married name :BAMBURY), but if she had come from Northamptonshire, I should be pleased to know whether she was living there with her family for the 1851 census. I am interested to know her mother's name, and whether there were brothers and sisters.
Thanks for any help in this.

Hi Florence Kate
Welcome to Rootschat :D I've found Elizabeth in 71 and 91 - her birthplace is Long Buckby - do you want details? Can't see her in 51 or 61 but will keep looking.
Cheers Jan ;)

Thanks Jan. Thanks Tati/Tanja.
Yes I should be most interested in 61, 71 and 91 details.
As for 51, it is perfectly possible that Mum and Dad had moved into the big city by then, leaving Eliza(beth) still working in Northants.
Then she comes visiting them sometime between 1851 and 1856 and meets William Bambury, (himself a Devon lad according to 1851 census.)
Isn't it exciting?? Thanks very much. This is as near as I've ever got to the Newton family.
Florence Kate.

Jan,
Just reread your info and read that Elizabeth was working in Watford. At first I thought it meant Watford, Herts, which is the only one I know, and was surprised somewhat, but on looking up Guilsbro to see where the Employer came from, I realise Watford is ALSO a village very close to Long Buckby.
It's amazing what you find out, isn't it?

Thanks, Yanja.
Just right, it's nice to have the details. The place in Devon is Thorverton.
Elizth, the dressmaker, gave her skills to my grandmother, and accounts for the various sewing machines which I still remember!

Hi
I looked at Elizabeth's batism at Whilton and it said her father was a Boatman.
No other children baptised in village.
Cheers Sandy

Thanks Jan for three more census results. I am quite overwhelmed by the amount of information I have gained TODAY thanks to you.
The 1891 reveals another child in the Bambury family that I did not know about! Elizabeth's children ranged over twenty-five years, from 1858 to 1883.

Thanks Sandy for that info.
I am sure "William Newton, Boatman" is perfectly possible. I don't know when the railway got going through Long Buckby, but I would guess it was between 1836 when Elizabeth (the eldest) was baptised, and 1851 when William appears - in Birmingham - as a Porter.
My next thought is to research the railway company on the one hand and the 1841 census on the other!

Hi again
I searched Stoke on Trent in 1841 as Lucy was born there around then, but can't find them. Can only assume they were still back in Northants or somewhere on route. Sorry don't have access to 1841 for Northants.

Hallo Jan,
Thanks for continued interest in my family! Lucy, Selina and Emma were all born in Stoke (Hanley is part of Stoke by the looks of it), so quite where the Newtons were in 1841 and for the next period before they moved to Birmingham I do not know.
I will see if they are still in N'hants in 1841 by any chance.

I was wondering, as Ellen was born in Stoke, whether this was William's second marriage, if it was I suppose Lucy might Elen's not William's - be interesting to see who the family consists of in 41 - hope you locate them.
Cheers Jan ;)

Jan, you have a point. That's what I find so fascinating amongst other things - the detective work.
Will report further when I can.
Best wishes,
Florence Kate

Jan,
It look as if it's a NO to the family being in Northants (just tried to check) OR Staffs in 1841.
I am beginning to wonder if they had already moved to Birmingham by 1841. (I know that doesn't really make sense because of the births of daughters in Staffs in the forties, but what else can you think/do??)
Will try to find out!
Florence K

It is possible all the daughter's born in Staffs are Ellen's if we are looking at a second marriage. I can check Birmingham in 1841. I suppose William could be anywhere working on the railways though.
Jan ;)

Not really sure about this one but posting for you to mull over - it would involve William not being married to Elizabeth's mother. I'm wondering about it mainly because I'm sure I saw a Mary Newton born Northants in 1851 when I was looking for Elizabeth - will see if I can find her again.

Hi, Jan,
This is par for the course. You think you're getting there real fast, and then you begin to wonder!!!!
I suppose the fact that I had seen Elizabeth's baptism at Whilton in 1836, with William and Helen given as parents, meant it didn't worry me unduly that the "wife" in 51 and 61 was given as "Ellen" and not "Helen", because the names are often confused/interchangeable.
It didn't really strike me that it might be two completely different people. I shall need a while to contemplate your latest offerings!
Persevere, I'm grateful you are interested in getting to the bottom of this... Thanks.

Hope you sort things out.

I have just added elsewhere, after all this time, and will do so here too, that I am wondering whether an entry in the 1841 census under BURTON should in fact read Newton. The original is so faint you just cannot be sure.
Burton William 30 Boats.......
Burton Ellen 25 ..................... Staffordshire
Burton Elizabeth 6
Burton Lucy 1 month Staffordshire
the address is Wharf Street, Stoke upon Trent, Shelton.
If this is the family I was looking for, it takes away the queries about was this the second marriage for Ellen etc, and makes things look far more straightforward. The fact that William and Elizabeth were not born in Staffs fits in too, since I know they were both born in Northants.

Hi Florence Kate
I thought I'd have a squint at the entry for you but can't find it ??? What are the reference numbers please?
Jan ;)
Found them :D
I don't think it's Burton - comparing the first letter of surname with Boatman. I would say Newton is a high possiblity but can't find another definite N to confirm - certainly looks like ewton and I don't know of another surname ending that way. I reckon you have found them after all this time :D
