Title: RHODES
Post by: Thos Rhodes on Sunday 12 February 06 20:43 GMT (UK)
I am hoping to find the father of WALTER RHODES (pictured below), born on the 16/1/1873, at the Wasp nest, Brampton to Charlotte Rhodes, (single woman), she also so had an elder son with the name of ARTHUR WILDGOOSE RHODES, born 24/8/1870 at Rose Terrace, Brampton, Charlotte was born 22/2/1847, at Wasp nest, Brampton.
In the 1881 Census Charlotte was the wife of STEPHEN WILSON, Arthur was 10, Walter was 9 years old, they also had six more children living with them, they lived in Carlisle Street, Whittington.

Walter Rhodes  married   Hannah Mellors, (pictured below) they had six son's and three daughter's.
Albert,  Arthur, who was my father,   Thomas Valentine,  John Walter, Leonard Charles and Raymond Cecil.  Girl's,  Charlotte,   Celena and Elizabeth.

Hi Thos,

I couldn't help notice the middle name of Arthur, b. 1870 :-

Wildgoose appears to be quite an unusual name. I therefore checked the 1871 census for Brampton and found only one eligible male - a Richard Wildgoose age 24, sadly already married, but I wondered whether he might have a connection with Charlotte and indeed Arthur or/and Walter?

It may be a wild goose chase but good luck hunting!!

Regards,

Pels

Hi Thos,

I wish you well with your search!
I am also one of the many who are having problems locating the errant father to the child of a 'single woman'. It doesn't make life easy does it?

Good luck,

Pels

Hi Thos,

I wonder if Charlotte ever came into contact with this gentleman - might be something to think about?

1871 census:

Arthur Wildgoose, head, b.1834 Darley, living Matlock
Ann Wildgoose, wife, b.1821, Darley

Matlock is situated only 8 miles from Old Brampton.

See what you think,

Pels

Hi there try also looking up surname 'de rhodes' as there is a pub of that name still in Balborough on Worksop road. A57. They were a big family out that way according to grandma who lived at Mastin (Marsden) moor.
