Can anyone help me.
My ggg grandmother, Eliza Jane Lyon, was born in 1847 to Mary Lyon at Gravesend in Kent. No mention of a father.
I believe Mary later married David Constant, a French seaman.
I can find no evidence of the marriage other than Eliza was called Constant at the time of her own marriage (in Scotland) in 1866.
A death certificate/gravestone/notification for Mary or David would be appreciated.

Hi Louise
Have you checked for Eliza's baptism http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=Search&PathList=%2FZ4a_Medway_Ancestors%2F%0A&SearchWords=&DateList ?
Is there an address on her birth certificate? Are there any other names given for Mary or just LYON?
There is a David CONSTANT died 1855 Gravesend area http://freebmd.rootsweb.com
Could he be the one on the 1851 census http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,40991.0.html ???
His burial is here http://www.rootschat.com/links/0fm/

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I have a copy of Eliza's birth certificate (entry 378 at Gravesend & Milton). She was born 4/5/1847 at 4 Princes Street, Gravesend, her mother's usual residence. I have no other name for Mary other than Lyon. It was on Eliza's marriage certificate in 1866 that she refers to her parents as being married. There was no indication on the marriage certificate that either parent was deceased in 1866yet I'm unable to find out anything about them.
The David Constant who died in 1855 is indeed the one listed on the 1851 census - it was his mother Ann who registered the death. As yet I am unable to confirm that he is "my" David Constant.
I really appreciate your help.

Hi
Whilst the address for the CONSTANTs in the 1851 census is 19 Church Street http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,40991.0.html it is worth noting that the neighbouring property was actually Princes Street (no 29) so it's is definitely in the vicinity and the numbering/addresses in the early census returns are not always that accurate. I haven't been able to find any other David CONSTANTs anywhere that my fit the bill. Have you looked for a will for David or his mother to see if there is anything mentioned there?

Many thanks for this information. I had tried looking up the address on a map but it wasn't apparent that the 2 streets were facing. It certainly sounds hopeful that this is "my" David.
I hadn't thought at looking up a Will and am not sure where to find one (if it exists). I am not familiar will the research of English records - David and Eliza have been my only English ancestors to date. I've not found the English records as detailed as those in Scotland which has made tracing that bit more difficult.
Many thanks for your help.

Hi Louise
See http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm for information on the National Probate Indexes (post 1858).
Prior to 1858, wills were proved according to locality. It would appear that Gravesend probably came under the probate jurisdiction of Rochester and wills are at the Centre for Kentish Studies, Maidstone and are indexed

Also, prior to 1858, wills could be proved in the PCC - these are online at the National Archives but mostly related to the more wealthy, those who had property in more than one diocese and some seamen http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/wills.asp

Hello LC, my 3rd great grandmother is also Eliza Jane Constant (Lyon), through my great grandmother, Eliza Jane Constant Forbes. We think there could have been a marriage between David and Mary as my great grandmother received his surname but it might have been at sea since there is a martime connection. The belief of a french connection has also been passed down on our side of the family. I would be happy to exchange further information. Look forward to hearing from you.

My grandmother's sister was called Eliza Jane Constant Forbes. She was born in 1901.
The original Eliza Jane Constant (born 1847) married Alexander Forbes in 1866.
I think we have a connection!

I found a forum that you were interested in James Stewart this James Stewart had a son Joseph who was transported to Australia in 1848 and changed his name to Goodwin. He married another convict Mary Ann Maule. Would you like to exchange information as I have wanted to contact someone researching this family also.

I think your James was from Perthshire. Mine is from Edinburgh and definitely had no Joseph in the tree.
Sorry

Joseph had a brother James, they lived in Blair Street Edinburgh before Joseph was convicted and transported to Tasmania. His mother on the court papers was Janet McNaughton. He was charged with 3 other men for theft.

My James was married to Margaret McNaughton and they had 3 children (James, John & Jean/Jane). They remained in Edinburgh.
James Stewart was a cabinet maker and also a soldier.
Sorry there is no connection
