I hope I'm not seen as cornering the market on these HOWLETT's, but it's a miserably wet afternoon in Cambridge at the moment, and what better way than t0 pass the time picking Rootschatters' brains...
I'm looking for a John HOWLETT who, according to the 1881 Census was 25 years old, and born in Bunwell. There were in fact two individuals with this exact name and birthdate; but the man I'm after was born in Bunwell, the other man in Carleton Rode - tho' both of them were living at separate dwellings with the same address: "Cottage, Carleton Rode".
John HOWLETT (the one I want to find as a child growing up with his parents and siblings in the 1861 Census of Bunwell) was married with a family in 1881, the other a bachelor still, that's the distinction.
All this preamble means I'm looking for his parents' names, obviously! With all these HOWLETT's about, I'm guessing it might be James...
Very best wishes,
Keith

Hi did you find the john Howlett you were looking for, as the John you mention is I believe was my Great Grandfather who was married to Georganna (nee Plumpton)
-
Looks like John was the illeg. son of Maria Howlett (dau. of a John Howlett).
Maria married a James Staff in Dec.qtr.1865 Depwade and 1871 census at Bunwell shows:
James Staff 38
Maria Staff 40
John Staff (?) 15
Emma Staff 3
John Howlett 75
So John Howlett listed as a Staff in 1871 and shown as son but whether this means that James was indeed his father who can say.

Hi Chris
Keith is looking for one of two John Howlett's both born in 1856 in Bunwell and Carleton Rode, you seem to be looking for a John born in 1864!
The John Howlett marriage I can find is possibly to a Georgeanna Rush:- Dec 1876 Depwade 4b 583

Your John Howlett shown on census as bc.1864 Bunwell.
1871 Census - Bunwell
William Howlett 53 Agricultural Labourer born Bunwell
Mary Ann Howlett 50 ditto
John Howlett son 7 ditto
The family appear to have been non-conformists as found the following on freereg:
John Howlett b.4/4/1863, bp.31/5/1863 Primitive Methodist Circuit Tr., Norwich, Norfolk, son of William and Mary Ann.
However, as William and Mary Ann were both born in Bunwell, according to census, then you would need to consult Bunwell parish records. However, parish records for Bunwell do not appear to be online.

Yes John Howlett born 1864 was my Great Grandfather, he married Georgianna Plumpton, she died in 1922 and is buried at Bunwell Churchyard, John died in my Grandfather Alfreds house in Norwich in the 30's. I was aware that John was a Methodist lay preacher. I recently went through Bunwell church records B/M/D's but only found confirmation of Georgianna's burial, no marriages or baptisms. Where can I get site of the records for the Methodist church in Bunwell as I presume that's where all the baptisms and marriages took place, also where do I go get site of the Bunwell parish records. Georgianna came from Carlton Rode, there is very little information on them other then her Mother was Blind Amy Kemp. There are lots of Kemps in the area. - Thanks - Kiffer
