Can anyone tell me anything about the above building, around 1920? My mother was born at this house in 1920. She was illegitimate, but her mother lived in Leicester. I wonder if the house coulld have been where girls in disgrace were sent to have their babies, away from home and neighbours. As far as I know, the family had no connection with anyone in Bilston. My mother's older sister was also illegitimate and both girls share a common middle name, Brittain.
Thanks.

Hello George,
I've only just joined RootsChat but in reply to 173 Oxford St., I am led to believe that it was probably a Lodging House in 1920.
It is no longer there as Bilston Oxford Street was redeveloped in the late 1960's

Hello japp and welcome to RootsChat
Hi George,
I think japp is correct
In 1911 there were 30plus "visitors" living there - from all over the country-all types of occupations-some married with wives present- so it would seem to be some kind of lodging house.
Maybe it was more than one property - as next door seems to be no 179 and was a beerhouse
The neighbouring house on other side was no 171

Yes Suz, The Beerhouse was named The Barley Mow

I was born in Bilston and have done a research into all the Public Houses,Inns,Taverns & Beerhouses so if anyone has a query on these buildings & their occupants I will try to answer their questions accordingly

Hello Japp & Suz,
Thanks for the information. I will need to carry on digging and hope that I can find out why my grandmother was in Bilston giving birth. As far as I have established so far, her family had no connection with Bilston whatsoever.
Thanks again,
George.
