Would someone know where I can get Memorial Inscriptions for the Black Hill Cemetery, Benfieldside Parish?
-
There are some here:

Thank you Susan. I was aware of that site but unfortunately it is a work in progress and does not have those that I so desparately seek.

If you have a Family History Centre near you, you can order the microfilms for the burials at Blackhill. The first film, 2104427, goes from 1862 to 1920, and the second and third, 2104428/9 from 1920 to 1998. Within each film there are several separate burial books, which are indexed by name, so it is fairly easy to find names you are interested in.
I can give you more information on what details you can find in each book if you wish.

Jennifer: I do have a Family History Center and would appreciate more detail on what I would find.
-
I have only seen the first film, this is how the books were set out, in columns:
Entry number;
year, date & month (of burial);
surname, christian name;
relationship (this could be, for instance 'son/daughter of....' for an infant/young person, or 'wife of...' for a woman. In the event of the woman being a widow, usually only the word 'widow' is entered, no relationships being given. Usually no entry at all for adult men.)
Occupation (where applicable)
Age
Address 1 (Street)
Address2 (Township, eg Blackhill, Benfieldside)
Officiating Minister;
Section (in which buried)
Grave number (this is useful, since some people bought a plot, hence family members buried in the same numbered plot)
Whether in 'consecrated' or 'unconsecrated' section of graveyard (effectively Anglican or Non-conformist/Roman Catholic)
Parish from which removed (eg Consett, Benfieldside)
Hope this helps

National Burial Index 2 covers Blackhill cemetery (the main one) which is probably the one which you require, also if you live in the Consett area I understand that Derwentside Council hold the original copies. :)

I run the gravetext website and generate its content. I have recently completed just over 1400 headstone transcriptions in the new graveyard - about a third of the total. If you are looking for headstones and can't find anything relevant in those listed for the old graveyard there may be some of use in the latest transcripts. If you let me know the relevant names I'll do a search and let you have the results.

Hi Pat
Would you mind looking for Farrow LONGSTAFF died Jan 1919 at Blackhill.
Cheers

According to the Burial records Farrow Longstaff, aged 65 years, was buried on 29th November 1919 in plot no. 259, Section 6 of the North graveyard.
I have yet to transcribe the headstones in Section 6 so don't know if he has got one or not. However, plot no 259 should not be too hard to locate. I'll have a look and, if there is a headstone, try to get a decent picture of it.

Hi Pat
Thanks fot that, can I just double check the date, a relative told me he died in January, the burial is November, is that right?
If you could check if he had a headstobne that would be great.
Cheers

I've just had a walk along to the graveyard to check for a headstone - there isn't one. In fact there are very few in that part of Section 6. I photographed a couple of headstones that were in roughly that location and checked the information on them against the database to make sure I was in the right area; the location was confirmed, so no luck.
There aren't many Longstaff burials in Blackhill cemetery so I've attached a PDF showing them all. You can confirm Farrow's details from that. People are usually buried within 3 or 4 days of their death, so unless there was some reason for Farrow to be put into cold storage you may have been working on the wrong date of death.

Hi Pat
Thanks for checking if he had a headstone & the other Longstaffs. There's at least 1 definite relative on there as the address is the same as Farrow's.
Cheers

Hi JayG,
I have just started doing my family tree and have found that Farrow Longstaff is my great great grandfather. I have my great grandparents marriage certificate and he is listed on it.
Could you tell me how you are related to him.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Pat
I'm also trying to locate ancestors buried in Blackhill, in particular Scott & Harkness families. When will these be available to search on line like the old graveyard? If you have time to do look-ups on these I would be grateful.
Many thanks
Linda

Welcome genehunter and hello again Issy
I lost contact with this thread in May 2008 and have just been reminded of it by the Moderator. I've attached some PDFs of Burial Records in Blackhill cemetery which may be of use/interest - no Gollogly records unfortunately.
