Title: 1841 census
Post by: Lewy on Monday 06 February 06 20:06 GMT (UK)
I've posted this onto the Surrey board aswell, as I'm not sure whether Southwark comes under Surrey or London!!

My relation (George S Tully) was born in St Mary's Lambeth, around 1827 I have him in the 1851 census at Little Guildford Street in Southwark with his parents Thomas and Sarah (think should be Susannah), But i am trying to locate them in 1841.

Thomas will be listed as a Turner/Carpenter and both he and his wife were born out of county.

Many thanks
Lewy

Lewy

I went looking for Thomas Tully (Thomas T* 40-43 in Middx & Surrey) and thought I found him....especially when he had a son aged 14 (perfect).........however Thos's trade and the fact that George is still a Tourle in 1861 (and the children in 1841 are all born Tourle) put the downers on that!

1841
BROOK STREET, LAMBETH CHURCH 2ND, LAMBETH, SURREY
THOS TOURLE    40   COAL MERCHANT      N
ELIZABETH "       38                                   N
MARY          "       16                                   Y
GEORGE     "        14                                   Y
JANE           "        9                                     Y
ELIZABETH  "        7                                    Y
EMMA          "        4                                    Y
---------------

SO.......it appears they do not exist under the christian names that they used in 1851 so a new approach is required.......

One assumes this is your George in 1861........
1861
18 NEW HAMPSTEAD ROAD, ST PANCRAS, MIDDX
GEORGE S TULLY   HEAD  33   CHAIRMAKER         LAMBETH, SURREY

SARAH           "        DAUR  7                                 ST PANCRAS, MIDDX
GEORGE S      "       SON    5                                 MARYLEBONE, MIDDX

Have you got the marriage cert of  .....GEORGE SHARVIL TULLY to SARAH ANN HULSE...Newington R.D...Dec qtr...1852....you are going to need it to see if his father is Thos........where was the groom living when he got married and who the witnesses are? ......... Sharvil is a surname, the question is...where and when did he/they get "involved" with it.........

1841

Hi Bryant - I really appreciate your efforts to help me. Yes I do have the marriage certificate - George was living at 6 Newington Causeway, father listed as Thomas Tully , a turner and the witnesses were Thomas Tully and John Brown. Just for ref aswell, Sarah was living in Blackman STreet.

Any ideas?

Doesn't look good does it!

Possible witness 1 is his father......and rent a witness 2 from the Church with a name of Brown!

Iv'e had a look for Thos under Chairmakers in the 1841 London P.O directory without any joy...... Wood Turner's.......an employees occupation not an employers, but I will have a look...... not there!

JOB HULSE......Sarah's brother (aged 12! or is father still around?) is in the 1841 P.O Directory at 124 Great Guildford Street as a Cheesemonger

UNFORTUNATELY.........I'm fairly sure they are not there to be found (Middx/Surrey) under any name beginning with T........that resembles "Tully" in even the slightest way......

Sorry
Bryant

They've stumped me for a few years now - I've just joined Sussex FHS and there are several people researching Tully's so hopefully one of them can help. The Hulse's are just as bad - Job (Sarah's father) just appears out of nowhere and then inconveniently dies before the census! Hey ho! That's the nature of this hobby I guess.

Really appreciate your help though.

G`day Lewy,
A note from "Downunder" regarding the Tullys in case I can be of assistance. The 1861 census lists George Sharvill`s offspring, includingFrederick John,4 months(born 27 Nov 1860).He was my grandfather(I am oldest child of FJ`s younger son Leonard John Frederick,1917-2007) and lived with him and his 2nd wife katherine(nee Gomm) just after WWll
In 1960/70s I traced family "manually" at Somerset House during business trips back to Thomas andSusannah?(marriage cert 1810),Sarah?(census 1851),Ann?(census 1861)
Some of the Tully descendents of FJ`s first marriage(EmmaLott) that I knew in my childhood in Tunbridge Wells have since made it to N.S.W.and Qld.They (since deceased) supplied fragmentary info on Rendell/Lewis
   I could never find Thomas`s death(post 1861-pre1871?).Agree on his Buxted origins,but by 1975 had hit a wall
Yesterday I enrolled in local group and found your extensive posting;could not work out if you or your husband are involved with my mob, where you fit in the puzzle and thus what info we might exchange
You`re dealing with a complete novice re emailing, even typing,so have patience until I graduate from L plates. Also I spend lengthy periods away travelling in Northern Oz so there could be delays in replying.
I notice a Michele Bergin recently  posted marriage certs of Thomas& Susannah(21-6-10)and Frederick John& Katherine(18-6-10) on Ancestry.com which may be of use.

Hi Nasha

Great to hear from you. Am trying to work out how we're related. My paternal grandmother was Doris kathleen Alice Rendell born 1910, the daughter of Emma tully and Frederick Rendell. Emma Tully was the daughter of Emma Lott and Frederick Tully.

Doris married Aywyne Alfred Lewis and they had four sons, the third being my Dad, Roy.

It's late now but I will look out my records and see if I can offer anything to you - we've just moved house so am afraid its all in boxes somewhere!

Lovely to hear from you!
