Hi again,
I'm now finding it difficult to read my gggrandfather's birth certificate. It says he's illegitimate, which is fair enough... but there's a note next to his name which is this... Can anyone read it... I can make out 'Paternity of child' then maybe 'found by' something... 'see [something] of [something], [something] Vol 1, pg 1'
Also, she's listed on page 5 of the 1861 census for Dunbar, East Lothian, but the rest of the household are on page 4... How can I find out what's on page 4? She's a domestic servant, so won't necessarily have the same name as the others in the household. ???

Paternity of child
found by DecN of Court

Could be "See Register of ? ? "

My guess is "See Regr. of Cnc . Prsh" (or "Preby"):-
See register of (?Cnc?) parish / presbytery
If the "Cnc" relates to the place where the chld was found, this would give you a parish register to consult.
Good hunting

This is Scotland isn't it?
You need to find the Register of Corrected Entries, Vol. 1 Page 1, 21 April 1863
Paternity of Child found by Decision/Decree of Court See Regr of Corr Entry 21 Apr 1863.
:)
The full birth certificate would contain the information in the RCE. Alternatively ask very nicely on the Scotland board and maybe someone going to New Register House will look it up for you.

Tis Scotland, yes!
Thanks so much everyone... I was struggling. ???
I'll have to look there when I go up to see my family in March then. I did find out that his mother never married and no father was put on his death certificate. His grandfather's name is on his marriage certificate as 'father'. :-\ I hope that was just a mistake and only put there as 'show' so that the parents of the woman he was marrying wouldn't know he was illegitimate. :-\

Re the 1861 Census
If you are looking on Scotlandspeople the only way I know to find out who is on the next or previous page is to pay 5 credits to view same (after having paid 5 credits to view your relation)
