Having just begun my search for links to my family past I am conscious that at some stage Robert Johnston (b1829) met and married Emma ***** (b1834).
Robert was from Manchester, Emma from Fordham (Cambs). What puzzles me is how or why they met at all, and what made them go to London? Or did they meet in London and then marry? Anyone any lines of thought I may pursue. Or even facts that explain would be wonderful.

Hi Joelrio
What information do you already have on the pair?
Do you have all census entries for them? The date of birth of their eldest child will provide a clue to their marriage date. It might also help with the location, but that is not guaranteed.
If you post what you know, we will see what can be seen!
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Arranroots/Trish/Emma,
Have you guys given me some information or what! Thanks to your leads, on one branch I am back to 1817 with another link arriving tonight still to go. On another I am back to 1829 and resting. Plus I have found that my Grandad did have a history before his birth date, which I am working on. One young lady that I am interested in finding a bit more about is Emma Munns from Fordham. On the 1851census she is shown as a servant, still in Fordham. Her birth is given as around 1834. This seems to tie in with her later on becoming Emma Johnston. Can anyone help me here. Parents would be real good but I will settle with anything. I am still amazed how you do it, but keep it up.

Hi JoelRio
You need an 1841 look-up or a marriage cert to be sure of the parents namess.
I can tell you that there are 2 MUNN families in Fordham in 1851.
Would you like details?
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

My brain isn't working on these threads this late (in France) but for those still awake there's an 1841 census index and baptism/burial indexes 1801-37 which might help on the Cambs FHS website

G'night!

Hi guys,
Thanks for the two Munns leads Arranroots, I was hoping to see a daughter named Emma there but no! I have her as being born in Fordham in 1834. She was still there as a servant girl in 1851 so maybe she is not my Emma after all. I will scuttle after the two that Emma suggested (I have no shame). David I tried the Cambs FHS site to no avail first off . Will no doubt be returning there.
On to other part of the family the 'Sturla' side. Leads from there have drawn attention from down in the West Country where it appears William captured the heart of one of their daughters in the early 1800's, brought her up to Chatham married her and then I think moved on to London.

Hello Joelrio
The MUNNS that I posted were in 1851 - Emma may belong to one of these, but she is down the road being a servant at the same time!
That is why it is important to find a marriage.
It might be interesting to look at the naming patterns.
West country to Chatham is some move! I wonder if the whole family came?
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Arranroots,
Why didn't I think of that? Of course the census is where they were at a particular time on a certain day isn't it, not where do they come from and the rest of the family live. Lateral thinking is needed here, I will get the hang of it I am sure.
Robert Johnston, I have a marriage entry September quarter 1859 in Islington, not too far from where they finished up. Only trouble I cannot tie an Emma anything, to this date. Do you think it may be the wrong Robert Johnston. I have fun and games coming. Robert and Emma's Daughter becomes a Payne, Her son then marries a JOHNSON. They were my mum and dad!
Joelrio
PS I am still working on the Sturla thing, but being boat people I guess the fortunes of the industry dictate where they go. Having said that Robert and Emma finish up in London, as so many I guess at the time.

OK here is what I would do
On you other thread, you have several entries for the family, including the 1871 census.
On that Emily is 10 and born Clerkenwell.
Birth
Emily JOHNSTONE
Clerkenwell Vol 1b Page 554
March quarter 1862
I would want to order that, as the most easily identifiable child of the marriage, and it will give her mother's maiden name.
What do you think?
A ;)

Full of good ideas Arranroots!! It's very exciting even though I'm not related to any of the people I've posted about...although I almost feel like I know them!
Joelrio...it'll all become clear eventually...you're right saying lateral thinking is what is needed, but you also need to think upsidedown and inside out!
David...you're in France!! Don't tell me that, I'll go green! Mind you, I only have another 8 weeks and 3 days until I go for the summer myself...can't wait as you can probably tell! I'm going back to my little corner of paradise ;D but will be leaving RootsChat behind.... :'(
Anyhow, will keep looking for ancestors while I'm here!
Regards, Emma ;)

Hi to those who have helped my probings over the last two weeks. What you have found and the leads that you have supplied have been superb. They have surpassed my expectations, and I have been able to follow through with positive results. I have even located Great Grandmother Emma, completing her segment of the tree, except I now have her parents which I guess are my GGGrandparents.
I am completely new to the Family Tree/History thing, having only started about a month ago. Can you help me with,.... where do we look for information once we get earlier than 1841. For example, Robert Johnston I am informed born Manchester 1829. Is there a means of tracking and verifying that kind of date?? Emmas parents are back sort of 1815 time.
Once more many thanks for your help, I am going to miss you guys.

Hi Joelrio,
Glad it's all worked out!! :)
Lancashire/Manchester records office should hold details of people and happenings before 1837 - parish registers and the like. There is the chance, of course, that there is a RootsChatter out there with this information to hand - I'd suggest a new posting asking for these look ups!
You reckon you'll miss us? Nah, you'll be back!!! ;D
Regards, Emma ;)

Emma
Thanks for that. I am back already! No I am not going anywhere yet, what I meant was I may have to move onto either other names, subjects or districts out of your area of operation. I will take your tip and toss it into Lancashire. Do I have to do anything to close the Robert and Emma Johnston file here?
Joelrio

Add another post and 'Completed - thanks' or such like to the subject.
(Move out of an area of operation? Not likely!)
Regards, Emma ;)

Robert and Emma Johnston search completed. Thanks for ALL help

Hi,
About 11 months ago I started looking for details of my family in the Fordham area I had heaps of help and closed the search when I thought it exhausted however, and there is always a however in Family History searching it seems. I have since found I had wrong female names!!! Robert Johnston b. Manchester b1829 was correct, but he met and married Anna Minett born Fordham 1834. Her Parents were Chas. F. W. Minett b1800 and Sarah Curtin (I think) b 1800. The Minetts had moved to London at some time. Robert and Anna married in 1861 at St. Mathias in Bethnal Green. This would put the move between 1834 and 1861. I have visited Fordham and viewed Graves for Minett family dated around 1840's. Would anyone have knowledge of links between my Minetts who moved, those who stayed and possible family with surname of Curtin who may have married Chas. Minett. I would welcome any information.
