Title: How do people do these look ups
Post by: Kam on Wednesday 22 September 04 17:38 BST (UK): I know that there a many sources online like LDS has IGI and 1881 census, PRO has 1901, familyhistory.org has a few (free 1881 pay-per view 1871) but how are people here doing the
census searches for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871.

is there some other sites i have not yet found or do you all use cd-rom or paper versions?

I only ask because i think i'm gonna annoy people by keep asking for look-ups all the time. when if its a resource I could look up my self

Yes I agree, where do these Really helpful people get there information. Because Im not being lazy, If I knew exactly where to go I would go there myself!! (& not waste there time) THEIR HELP & INFO IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

All the sites Ive come across ALWAYS want money to see more info!!

Post by: GreySquirrel on Thursday 23 September 04 13:18 BST (UK): Some of 1871 is on Ancestry.co.uk, with the outstanding counties to follow by the end of the year (apparently). I assume for the other censuses people do look-ups at home using the non-surname-indexed census CD-Roms published by S&N Genealogy, Archive CD Books and Stepping Stones. I imagine very few people are using microfilm at archives such as TNA or FRC.

I know there is a RootsChat disclaimer on this board about any look-up offers not breaching the licence agreements of the publishers but is it not the case that all CD-Rom and Ancestry look-ups are probably in breach?

We could do that here, as well, if there is enough interest.

A good site for databases (census, B,M,D, and much more), as opposed to "otherwise" interesting sites is http://ormond.i8.com

The previous discussion about this is that the information on a census page is *NOT* copyright, yet the image of it is. So transcriptions should be ok, posting the image may/may not be.

Just noticed this thread

I buy lots of CD Archives and printed census transcriptions containing information on Sussex especially the 1841 & 1851.

Ancestry.com gives me access to 1871, 1891 & 1901 census details (paid subscription)

Most of my archives were amassed whilst doing research for Open University courses, especially DA301, and the Local History Certificate at Sussex University.

Gravestone Transcriptions and Pictures were done by myself on location - before they get vandalised to far to be able to gather information from them.

Other than that, it is off down the road to the Library or into Lewes for the County Records Office

Post by: D ap D on Tuesday 28 September 04 14:43 BST (UK): I hire a couple of microfilms from the local LDS, especially for the older census'. Costs 6€ a throw, but you usually get a couple of census per film.

If its only single requests, the local library usually obliges, or the county archives and for me, best of all the LLGC in Aberystwyth for enquiries in Wales. Not only for census though, also for Parish records and allsorts of wierd and wonderful things.

Does this mean "local" as in "my local S. German LDS" ??

If it does, then that would also be an option for me, in Berlin.

yes, theres one in Stuttgart, about 10 mins from where I'm based and a few others dotted around.

Just had a look at the LDS site. There is one in Berlin:

Otherwise, on the LDS homepage, go to "Library", then "family history centers" and choose the country/city you want.

Unfortunately, there are none where I am at the moment :'(
