Title: Abbreviation Mystery
Post by: Arundel on Wednesday 01 February 06 18:09 GMT (UK)
I obtained the enrollment record of the Connaught Rangers for my ancestor James Halpin (date of attestation 29/1/1863). He had previously been a Private in the 89th Regiment and then joined the North Mayo Militia (date of attestation 1/10/1855).

His discharge date is given as 1/2/1868 in Ballina Co Mayo. The mystery is the cause of his discharge. This is given as W.O.C. 19th March 1859. Can anyone tell me what W.O.C stands for  ???

I had thought it was Wounded on Campaign but I couldn't prove it and I have no idea what campaign it would have been.

Thanks for your help all the same.

In 1859 British troops were in action in China. Following a Chinese attack on a British merchant ship in an attempt to force concessions from China British troops stormed Chinese forts at Taku, at the mouth of the Peiho River.
