Title: Lowestoft Shipwreck
Post by: silvertonhistory on Wednesday 01 February 06 11:28 GMT (UK)
A Brixham registered vessel. the Lady Bassett, loaded with salt, was wrecked in a storm on 11 December 1874, to the north of Lowestoft harbour. The report in The Times states that the lifeboat rescued the crew, but I would love to find further details such as those from local papers, or books on East Anglian lifeboats.

worth investigating whether it was covered by the London Illustrated News.

Sounds odd, I know-but as it happens I've just bought a print of Yarmouth fishing vessels taken from this paper. On the reverse is an article on a storm in Mar 1877 where 18 vessels from Yarmouth and Lowestoft were lost.

There is a web site where articles from some issues have been transcribed, no idea if it will cover the period you need

If you know which life boat station that did the rescue, most of them keep cuttings from the local paper about the events that they attend. Could try calling the life boat station and asking them.

Hi silvertonhistory,

        Yes itīs me again !

The Victoria/Loetitia,
the lifeboat belonging to Lowestoft was the one in use in 1874. She was launched 47 times and saved 271 lives. Broken up in 1876.

There is a man called Joe Capps - who is an expert on Lowestoft Lifeboats - he has his own webb page with a contact link.

Regards    Rosemary

Thank you for the replies. I have sent an e-mail to the host of the Lowestoft Lifeboat website, as that is an excellent idea that I hadn't thought of.
Re the London Illustrated News, is there an index available on-line?

I realize this is an old thread. I apologize.

I would however, be very interested to know if any information was every found. The last post mentions an article but it appears the information or link has been removed.

The reason I am so interested in further info is because I recently came across some family history showing that my Great-Great-Great Grandfather (John Gregory) was the Owner/Master of a ship called Lady Bassett between 1864 and 1871 in the Brixham area.

Prior to the Lady Bassett he also served on the "Hope" (three different times), "Dart", and the "Ann and Maria".

I realize the chance of any information is slim, but thought I would try.

Thank you.

Jon

Silvertonhistory... thank you very much for the reply. It appears I will have to post a few more times before we can communicate outside of this forum.  ::)

I am looking forward to speaking with you.

Hi prerunner1982

Last I saw you only need one more post to be able to send PMs, I'm sure you can think of something to post on this topic  ;)

Findem... I am sure I can..  ;D

Silvertonhistory... Would you happen to have any info on a John Bowhey (or his family)? He was also a mariner and in my family tree. He died on March 16th 1846 when he went over board and drowned. He was on the Swift Steamer in the Bristol Channel.

I obviously do not know what all you have researched but figured it was worth a shot...

John Gregory and John Bowhey (or Bowhay) were 2nd cousins as well as father-in-laws. John Gregory's son William George married John Bowhey's daughter Sarah Ann.

Have you ever looked at the Crew Muster Rolls for ships registered at Dartmouth c1824-34? The Bowhey family including a John is listed. There is too much to list here so contact me via GJHPatBTINTERNET.COM
