Hi all,
I am trying to find out more about James Taggart. He was Born in about 1813 in Ballymena, He married Rosetta Mccafferty In about 1833 in Ireland,
They had at least one son John He was married in Scotland in 1848.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi there,
Would I be right in assuming this is not a Presbyterian family? I am helping research a Co. Antrim Taggart family from Donegore. We are stuck with Andrew Taggart 1833. There may be no connection with your family. We are looking at all possibilities though. One of their family was named Vincent and at the moment we have no obvious explanation for that name appearing in their family. The Donegore family were Presbyterians.
All the Best, Christopher

Hello
I am a Taggart in Ontario Canada and I am trying to connect stray Taggarts in my tree.
Robert and Jane Taggart
son James Taggart married Rose McAfferty. (married 1831)
daughter Roseann Taggart married John Scarlett
Roseann had siblings James and Jane
Does this sound like your branch?
-
yes that does sound like my Taggart branch. You didn't mention my ancestor John yet everything else seemed to fit.
-
Some time ago I was in contact with a lady who answered a posting for Taggart/Scarlett. She sent the following information.
Emily Jane Scarlett born 1897 Drumboghena. Co. Fermauagh, Ireland
Daughter of James Scarlett and Ellen Graham. James was born 1848 Drumboghena.
He was the son of William Scarlett and Martha Nixon.
Emily Jane married a Scarlett who was born Ballycastle Co.Antrim in 1891.
He was the son of John Scarlett and Letitia Reynolds.
John was the son of John Scarlett and Roseann Taggart
Roseann was the daughter of James Taggart and Rose McAfferty. James and Rose were married in 1831.
James and Rose had two other children…. James and Jane. Roseann Born 1837. Other children between 1831- 37
James was the son of Robert Taggart and Jane ?
Roseann Taggart married John McLean. The met and married in New York City.
As for my line I have Taggarts and Scarletts that are connected but I do not know how. My Taggarts all have reference to where they were born but unfortunately the places they settled in also bear the same name as Ireland. ie Cavan. I have not been able to figure out on which side of the ocean they were at the time. All I have to go on is that James came to Canada in 1818 at age 21. He may have come directly from Ireland to Canada or from Ireland to United States to Canada. James and his brother John operated a mill. Even the family groupings are speculation. Cousins may have come and settled together.
My Taggarts are

Hi, still trying to connect stray Taggart family members?
I have John BENSON Sr. b. about 1815 in Ireland, went to Toronto in 1840s, m. Mary KINGSBOROUGH/KINGSBURY. I'm a descendant of their second, of four children: John BENSON Jr. m. Sarah Ann BROCK. The fourth child: Joseph BENSON b. about 1855 m. Mary Jane TAGGART. Joseph and Mary Jane went to Grand Rapids, MI, USA where several children were born. They went next to Roseland, Tangipahoa Parish, LA, USA before 1896. I don't have more details abut the TAGGART line but I will share any details about the related BENSON line from Ireland and to Toronto and NYC. I contributed a work on the BENSON line, compiled by my uncle, to the Canadiana Department, OGS, North York Public Library. Cheers, 'sword' [from Toronto].

I will try to answer any questions you have. I donated a copy of my uncle's compilation of the family to The Canadiana Department, Ontario Genealogical Society, North York Public Library. Have you seen this, "The Descendants of John and Mary Kingsborough Benson" by Robert G. Espie?

Frederick William Benson b. 18 Apr 1875
Charles Annesley Benson b. 15 Feb 1878
Ellen Leona Benson b. 31 Mar 1883

I just came upon this entry and was quite surprised. I must be that lady you were in contact with as my
mother was Emily Jane Scarlett born 1897 at
Drumboghena. All that history is correct, however
she married Nat McLean born Ballycastle in 1891. He descended from Robert and Jane Taggart's son James
who married 1831 to Rose McAfferty. They had at
least 3 children - John, Jane and Roseann. As far as I can learn James Taggart and his wife never left Ireland.
Roseann was my great grandmother. I have the family
history from there forward.
-
I descend from Robert and Jane Taggart. Their son
James married Rose McAfferty in 1831 at Dervock
Presbyterian church. They had 3 known children
John, Jane and Roseann my great grandmother.
I have Roseann's family down to the present.
Jane married a Lyons but I don't know about John
or if there were other children

My great great grandparents were James Taggart (born c 1811) and Rose McAfferty. They were born in the Parish of Billy, not Ballymena and married in the Dervock Presbyterian Church. You have connected them to the wrong Taggart family. They moved to Scotland circa 1841 with their children which included John, Jane and Rose Ann my great grandmother. Another daughter was born in Scotland. They both died in Scotland.

Hi Christopher,
Re Taggarts of Donegore. I have a little mystery which you might be able to solve for me. In my family tree there is a Jane Taggart Gawn born c1844. I have wondered where the Taggarts came in to this family. Jane was the daughter of John Gawn (b1795)and Catherine Fletcher. John's father Thomas Gawn was originally from Donegore but moved to Dunsilly c1796 so John would have been brought up in Dunsilly, though he lived in Kilbride as an adult, and he died there in 1872. In his will John names his daughter Jane as Mrs Hunter.
I have been looking at the Dunsilly & Kilgavanagh revaluations and frequently see the name Taggart but do not know how to connect them to my Gawns.
Do you have any ideas?

I've been able to pin point that my family came from County Tyrone, Ireland to Canada in the mid 1830's.
John Taggart (b abt 1780) & Fanny Rolston (b abt 1784)
Both born in Ireland & died in Canada
children:
Edward abt 1810, wed Isabella McBride
James abt 1813, wed Jane Reid
William abt 1814, wed Mary Reid
John between 1815-1818, never married
Mary Jane abt 1819, wed Robert Allen
and Clarke abt 1823, never married
Eliza Margaret 7 April 1828 in Co. Tyrone, Ireland, wed John Taylor
This family first settled around Toronto in the early 1840's then moved on into the western area of Ontario Canada, Grey Co, Wellington Co., Dufferin Co., and Huron Co. Some even moved across Canada to as far away as British Columbia. This family never lets grass grow under their feet.
If any one can help me with this family please connect me.
Thank you & Hold fast!!
