Title: army ? regiment info required

hi, i have info of my ancestor being a private in 1st battalion,14th foot .
he was possibly in  portsmouth in 1865, possibly malta in 1866 and definitely in east indies 1873.
his name was thomas Liddington and i believe he was an engineer.
can anyone help find out more about the regiment he servd in. ::)
