Title: LOUGHLIN - GALWAY
Post by: 47813 on Wednesday 25 January 06 02:12 GMT (UK)
OK long shot but this has to be the right place to inquire  :)

Cut a long story short i live in England and my great grandfather PATRICK LOUGHLIN Born 1861 Ireland, came over in the between 1881 and 1891 to Salford then raised a family in Heywood (between Bury and Rochdale)

My dad says the Loughlin side of the family came from Galway

On the 1901 census it lists birthplace as Tuone, Ireland

No such place exists and some people on the internet have said it could be Tuam which would fit in with the supossed Galway connections

I know its not alot to go on but any info or advice is very welcome.

Thanks

Jonathan Loughlin

Hi Jonathon
I am doing some research on behalf of my wife's Auntie. Her name is Honora "Peggy" TUCKER ne SLAWSON. Her Grandfather was Patrick LOUGHLIN from Tuam, Galway. And he brought his family up in Heywood, so I guess we must be talking about the same Patrick.

WOW! This is amazing... more then i could have ever dreamed.

Thankyou Ken, its so good to hear from someone linked to Patrick Loughlin.

I'm so wanting to go into this, do you have anymore information on the Slawson's? what year was Honora born? was her mothers name Mary?

Is there anything you want to know about the Loughlins?

How well do you know the Loughlins? have you gone any futher back?

We must talk more, i'm so exicted!

Thankyou again Ken

Jonathan

been off straight away and done some digging and low and behold i find on my family tree that i have next to Patrick Loughlin's eldest daughter Mary Loughlin b1894, Heywood the name Slawson with a ? next to it! i must have been looking for her possible marriage and the only one that was likely was Slawson but i never went into it, it only been a hunch.

I guess you may know most of this. Mary A Loughlin married Walter Slawson apr-may-june Qtr 1920 Bury (8c 1755)

Ran out of time but will look futher into it tomorrow
Walter looks to have been born 1893 in North Wales.

All very interesting

Thanks again Ken

Hi Jonathon

Glad to hear from you. Good isn't it when sometihg drops into place.

My wife is the neice of Peggy (Honora) Slawson. Peggy married James Tucker, my mother-in-laws brother.

I know this part of the family quite well having spent many a memorable weekend with them.

Of Patrick I know little but I am doing this for Peggy who has the Slawson side but not much on the Loughlin side. From what Peggy told me there was a brother Thoams who I believe emigrated to the USA.

Where abouts do you fit in to the Loughlin side?

I will get the information on Births etc as soon as I get my pc working again. At the moment I am making do with our old laptop, but all my files are on my own pc.

Regards
Ken

Shame about your computer Ken, hope you get it fixed.

Well i'm hooked on looking for Slawson's! and although i could not find any record of Peggy's birth i did come across a John R, Nora and Mary Slawson born between 1920 and 1924. This have to be her brothers and sisters, do they ring a bell?

Well anyhow i'm sure when your computers fixed you can comfirm this.

On to the Loughlin's - Its great to hear you say you belive a Thomas Loughlin went to the USA as its been mentioned many many a time by my dad that some of the family (ie Patrick) came over here and some went to the USA, but thats all he knows.

Were do i fit into the Loughlin family? - i guess that would help lol
I'll go backward
i was born JONATHAN MICHAEL JAMES LOUGHLIN in June 1986 in Rochdale

As you can tell by the surname its my dads side of the family and he was born - MICHAEL ANTONY LOUGHLIN in April 1951 in Bury (Heywood)

His parents were - FRANK LOUGHLIN and ELIZABETH HELEN JACKSON

FRANK was born in Nov 1908 in Heywood to PATRICK LOUGHLIN and JULIA CONNOLLY

JULIA sadly died in May of 1909 and FRANK i'm told was brought up by his elder sister and father - This must be MARY LOUGHLIN (Later SLAWSON) as she would be about 15 at the time.

So the link that links us is that FRANK LOUGHLIN (my grandfather) is the youngest brother of MARY LOUGHLIN (Later SLAWSON) who is Peggy's mother.

PATRICK married JULIA in 1892 in Bury and it took me a hell of a long time to find well it was someone on the internet who did and i'm forever greatful to them as on their marriage certifcate LOUGHLIN is spelt as LAUGHLION !!!!!!

I'm a fool for never getting my hands on the marriage certifcate as it only £7 but i want to get it online and the GRO doesn't take my only card (a VISA election) :(

FRANK and MARY that i so far know of had brothers JOHN (b1897) JAMES (b1899) and NORA (b1902) and probably alot more! as it has been said that my granddad had a LOT of brothers and sisters.

JOHN was killed in action on July (24th) 1918 in France serving with the 51st Battilon Machine Gun Corps (INF) - legend has it that his legs were blown off my a gernade. We have several pics of him in his dashing uniform and details of were is war grave is (i must go and see it) Check out the War Graves Commission website.

JAMES is proving tough to track down and NORA all i have to go on is well the record on the BMD and a picture of a young lady and the words NORA LOUGHLIN on the back.

A little on the CONNOLLY's Julia was born in 1865 in Heywood and a few of her older siblings and both parents were born in Ireland in Kilmain and thats as far back as i have them.

The earlist i have PATRICK in England is lodging somewhere on the 1891 census - the actul page its on is somewhere buried, i'll see if i can dig it out.

i think i've gone on long enough but i'll add one final thing.
Although is wife sadly died Patrick lived a long life and died in 1965 at the age of 104. One of the greatest things i have is a picture thats in a book on Heywood you can buy in the shops that has Patrick (Pat) celebrating his 100th birthday in 1961 with Sir Matt Busby manager of Manchester United and trainer Jack Crompton. My dad says being a young 10 year old mad Manchester United fan it was about as bad as it could get when he came home from school to find he'd missed Sir Matt Busby at his Granddads house!

I really would to know more about the LOUGHLIN's and the SLAWSON's

if you want to ask any questions, feel free to ask anything at all.

Hope this helps you and Peggy

It is a bit of a pain trying to find the info on the birth of Patrick, have you managed to get any further back? I think it is great that we have connected, I was not too hopefull of making much progress.

Hi Ken

First i must apoligize for my poor expertise in family history. I'm a complete novice at this and i only ever use free info of websites as i'm so skint, lol
You know more about my family name then i do - how embarrassing!

I feel mean that your being very kind and genorous in sharing with me dates etc that i don't have but i have nothing to give in return.

Don't get me wrong - i still can't believe it and i'm sure with your expertise and my.... well luck? lol, we might get somewhere on Patrick and also who knows on the USA side of the family.

Sadly i was clinging to the hope that extra info was waiting to found on the MC of Patrick and Julia but i guess you Drew a blank?

I don't want to blabber on telling you things you already know lol

so i'll see if i can get anymore info - you keep asking and keep asking and maybe you might jog something lol

Sorry i can't be of anymore help

Jonathan

Hi Jonathon

No apology needed, everyone makes a start sometime, it doesn't seem that long since I first started out with my family. One thing I learnt is that any info is good. The stuff I passed on is what Peggy gave me to get me started. Your side of the family is all new to me. I have found that it helps to sometimes go sideways and fill in the gaps as someone may pick up on something and it makes the connection.

I try not to use the pay sites until I get a reasonably sound lead to follow, skint is usually the deciding factor here as well.

Hi Jonathan, I am one of four great granddaughters of Patrick Loughlin, my grandma was Mary Slawson and my mother was Honora (known as Peggy Tucker) nee Slawson.

Ken who you have been in contact with is my cousin by marriage.  My name is Julia, I was named after my great grandmother, Patrick's wife.  I looked my mums name up on google today as it is the 8th anniversary of her death.

Very interesting to read some of the history of my family
