Hi,
I am interested in a Caroline MITCHELL born 1840 or 41. Her parents may have been in service. She did have siblings but cannot tell you more. All the information that I have is here.
Could SKS please lookup the census to see if she is listed.
Sailed from London on “Golden South” arriving Melbourne, Victoria 13th June 1863 then sailed by “Black Swan” to Launceston, Tasmania and was coached to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
Free arrival:
Single, 22 years old, Protestant, Read and write, General servant, Native place: Woolwich, Sent out on application of Mary G. Dean
Came out with Anne Kiley or Kily. Anne was in her 30’s and was born in County Cork, Ireland.

There is a surname-only index to Woolwich 1841 at the "Greenwich Heritage Centre". If you ask nicely they may be able to give you the refs for the Mitchell Surname.
1851 is name(& age) indexed. It's on fiche; so takes a while until I get to a reader. See www.nwkfhs.org who produced the index (and have a helpful little map too).
1861 is not indexed for that area, except by address, and comes under the London Census.

It's looking a bit odd. I can't find a Caroline Mitchell age about 10 in 1851 Woolwich. I also have Deptford, so I looked there and found a
Caroline MICHIELLS age 10 B Deptford with her widowed? Grandmother Caroline Colebrook age 55 b Deptford .
Address was no 2 Collier Street (Deptford St Nicholas)
Ho 107/1585/ fol 51a.

Hi Casalguidi and others,
I'm still very interested. The last post is very interesting. I would be interested in where they were born by looking at the 1851 and 1861 Census entries. The names of the children are similar to the ones in Tasmania as well. That seems a good guide.
Caroline has an entry in www.familysearch.org as well:
CAROLINE MICHELL
25 DEC 1839 St Alphage, Greenwich, Kent, England
Father: CHRISTOPHER MICHELL
Mother: CAROLINE
I wonder if other researchers are researching.

This would appear to be the family later:
1851 - Greenwich Rd, Charlton, Kent
Christopher MITCHELL hear mar 47 labourer (can't quite read the rest of the occupation) b.Camberwell Surrey
Caroline wife 43 b.Camberwell Surrey
Harriett dau 19 b.Camberwell Surrey
John son 16 blacksmith's apprentice b.Camberwell Surrey
Caroline dau 12 b.Greenwich Kent
Matilda dau 2 b.Charlton Kent
HO107/1590 folio 36 page 14
If you do a parent search on the IGI http://www.familysearch.org - filling in no details other than regions (British Isles) and parents Christopher MITCHELL and Caroline you will get a number of children up which would appear to belong to this family ;)
I haven't spotted them in 1861 yet.

Hi
I realise I'm a bit late to this party (to say the least), but I was interested to see a mention for Christopher and Caroline Mitchell.
If it's on any interest, I believe Caroline (formerly a Digby) died on 31 Mar 1852 from convulsions (epilepsy) and Christopher died on 22 Oct 1853 from being smothered in a sandpit.
I haven't had much chance to do work on the children with the exception of Matilda who married a fisherman called George Robert Dench and they moved to Grimsby.
Because of the time gap, I would guess that you already have all of that anyway.
Cheers

Hi Chris,
Been a very long time since I logged in but I'm still interested in the MITCHELLs. Have a bit more information to work on.
